[Software Chrome Extension] MTG Card Finder

Hi all,

I've developed a chrome extension to find cards at the magiccards.info or wizards.com without opening additional new tabs or windows, only highlighting a word in the browser and clicking.

It's useful to see legality, prices, corrected text and more!

It can be installed free from this website: chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/infi...

I accept suggestions to improve it.

Is there anybody out there?

Can't we already do this?

You're missing it because *turns Storm Crows sideways* all your base are belong to Chuck Norris and every other overused meme ever.
I like it because you can do it without typing any word, just only highlighting a word and clicking the icon.
Opening new tabs or windows to search a magic card while reading a magic article it's so annoying, just do it with one click Wink

I do not understand.
If we are reading a Magic article, where are we reading it that doesn't link the cards for you? Also, how can someone read an article and not know what format the author is referring to?

Also, is this something that when you click the word, it doesn't open a new window but instead navigates away from the page you are reading?

This could have the potential of being useful, if nothing else, for you to use when new posters don't autocard. And the fact that the "Runtime Error" made me migrate to chrome makes things even better.

I'd like more information about how it works before downloading it, though.
OMG click HERE! OMG! How to autocard and use decklist format
--->
For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

I like storm crow because I really like crows in real life, as an animal, and the card isn't terribly stupid, but packs a good deal of nostalgia and also a chunck of the game's history. So it's perhaps one of the cards I have most affection to, but not because "lol storm crow is bad hurr hurr durr".

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

You're right, most of the articles are well oriented and maybe have autocard, but there are others that have only a link. But think about forum articles, emails from friends talking about cards, facebook and so on...them often haven't autocard.

Regarding the format, think that you maybe are reading a legacy article, discover a card (new for you) and you want to know if you can use it in your extended or standard deck, or see if the text has been updated.

To use it, you only need to highlight the word/words and click the extension icon, then a popup will display the query from wizards or magiccards.info, without opening new windows or tabs and continue navigating (when you click the original page, the popup closes automatically).

Just try it and leave a feedback (it would be better if the feedback is left in the Chrome extensions site Smile)

MTG Finder has been improved, check the brand new features:

  • Blackborder.com search. With card prices, comparison, image and more.

  • Gatherer search. All official magic database with corrected text, artist and much more with only one click.

  • Custom keyboard shortcuts.

See the MTG Finder full description in the Official Chrome Webstore site.

I hope that it can be useful to you  ;)

Suggestions are welcome!   Laughing
When I highlight a card name, then choose a search engine from the right click menu, the results show up in a thin (2 inch) band at the top of the browser window. It has a scroll bar, but the whole card image can not be seen at once, much less the whole results page. I'd consider this unusable in this condition.

@Samot: Have you selected the open in a new window instead of open in a new tab? If it opens in a new window, it will get your default new window size, I think that I cannot handle that. Have you got any problem highlighting a word and clicking the toolbar icon?

MTG Finder new version includes TCG Player search. It allows you to see card prices from several stores, comparisons, stats, simil cards and much more.

Check it absolutely free at the Chrome Webstore.
(Firefox version is now in beta version! some mac user wants to test it?)
Highlighting a word and clicking the toolbar icon seems to work fine, but when using the context menu, I get this, whether it is set to open in a new tab or window.

That's very strange :-S  To fix it I need to replicate it and I really don't know how to do it...

Happens it with every search mode? What OS are you using?

The first scope of the app was the icon-popup, later I included the right click and keyboard shortcut. Do you still consider it unusable even if toolbar icon works fine? Frown
I'm on windows 7 home premium SP1

I guess it's not "unusable" if you can press the toolbar icon, but I consider that a workaround, since my first instinct was to use the (malfunctioning) context menu. I'd say if a feature is supposed to work and it doesn't, it should be taken out until it does, unless you're asking people to beta test.

If i'm the only person with this problem, I can see why you might not want to waste time fixing it. I'ts not a big deal to me. But I havn't done anything I can think of to cause the glitch, so it's probably something other people will encounter.

For my own personal taste I would like it to be able to search Black Lotus Project.

Ultimately, though, I would really like this for Firefox, since currnetly that is my browser of choice (I switch back an forth every few months).
@DrWorm. Firefox version is in beta version. I hope to have it online working soon. I've asked to Black Lotus project to have it included, I'll let you know. Don't you like TCG Player? it also has stats, graphics and includes store comparisons.

@Samot.  Every software, even if it has been hardly tested, can have bugs (see service packs... Wink).
As I said before, popup is the main software function, others has been included under users requests or suggestions, so it shouldn't be considered a workaround.
You're the first person that complains about the "malfunctioning" context menu. As I know, it works well, It has been tested in every standard platform but Mac. However, I'll try to understand your problem and try to fix it. It's very strange, because it should be basic html width/height properties. Are you sure that you don't have anything that changes HTML/javascript?

Thank you two for your suggestions!

Personally, I rarely buy online so store comparisions are not important to me.  TCG player card screens just have too much junk, and I do not know what they use to gather their trend data.  It has more plateaus in places where BLP has changing prices, so that tells me that it may not look at enough sources.

It is a nice extension, though.

MTG Finder now supports Black Lotus Project searches, so you will be able to have live mol prices!

MTG Finder now searches into Magic Card Market too, the most famous trade site in Europe. It have been also translated to Spanish, Italian and German.
