Lords of YMtC - A contest

Lords of You Make the Card: A contest hosted by me (coincidently, the first contest I've ever attempted to host) that some of you who've been around may notice greatly resembles a contest hosted close to almost a year ago by Oh_Snap (RPJesus' Homogenization). YMtCs don't die, they merely slumber.

How it works:
After the first round, each player will be assigned a personal criteria which will follow you throughout the contest. All cards you submit will be required to match both the criteria for the current round and your own personal criteria. As the contest progresses, you will be assigned more criteria. Personal criteria will always be an aspect taken from your submissions. It could be anything ranging from color, to individual words, to card type. Anything.

Every round, the player with the lowest score will be eliminated. Every sixth round, two people will be eliminated. If two or more player's are tied for the lowest score, there will be a brief extra elimination round between the players involved. For more information see the section below entitled 'Extra Elimination Rounds'. Every third and seventh rounds, new criteria will be added. So the rounds should look something like this:

Round 1 - Initial Personal Criteria Added
Round 2
Round 3 - Elimination and Second Personal Criteria Added
Round 4 - Elimination
Round 5 - Elimination
Round 6 - Double Elimination
Round 7 - Elimination and Third Personal Criteria Added
Round 8 - Elimination
Round 9 - Elimination
Round 10 - Elimination
Round 11 - Elimination
Round 12 - Elimination

And so on and so forth, until only one player is left. That player will be dubbed the unofficial (I don't think I have enough power to make it official, sorry) Lord of YMtC. A parade may or may not be held in your honor, somewhere in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Scoring:
You will (usually) be graded based on this rubric, which I did not borrow from somewhere:

xx/10: Wording; Color Pie; Templating
xx/10: Creativity; Ingenuity; 'Wow' Factor
xx/10: Balance; Printability
xx/10: Execution; Elegance; Understanding
xx/10: Flavor
-----------------------------------------
xx/50: Total

Warning: Failure to submit a card will automatically result in a score of 0 for that round.

Bonus:
At the end of each round, any player that received a perfect or near-perfect score (48-50/50) will receive an asterisk next to they're overall score. Rules for asterisks are as follows:

A player with an asterisk may declare they are using their asterisk when they post their submission for a round. If they do, for that round they will recieve 3 extra points added to their score. This can increase a player's score beyond 50 if they score a 48, 49, or 50.

An asterisk is only good for one use, but they are cumulative.

Please remember to state if you are going to do this when you post your card for that round.

Extra Elimination Rounds:
If, during an elimination round, two or more players are tied for the lowest cumulative score, there will be an extra elimination round to decide which of them is to be eliminated.

Extra elimination rounds last for exactly 24 hours starting from when I post the criteria. They are exactly the same as regular elimination rounds except they only involve applicable players. Failure to post a submission with the 24 hour window will result in automatic elimination.

Due to time constraints, extra eliminations will most likely not have in depth grading. You'll get a number rank and someone will be eliminated. I apologize for this but if I spent time making in depth grades for everyone in elimination rounds then we'd never get anything done.

General Notice:
I'm not infallible. I make mistakes just like everyone else. If you notice that I make a mistake, whether it be with your grade or with anything else, tell me so I can correct it. I'd like to ask for your patience as this is the first contest I've ever attempted to run and my first major test as a judge. Thank you.

Also, I'm in college. I have classes and my real life takes priority over this. I will try my best to grade submissions as quickly as possible. To try to speed things up, I'll sort of grade-as-you-go. This means that I'll grade you're card when I see it. If you make changes to your card, please post that you did so, that way I can adjust your grade.

Without further ado here's your Round 1 Criteria: Design a nonland card.

Round 1 will be closed when I post grades which will likely be about three days from now. Good luck, and have fun.

Should I factor in how long it takes to prepare? Cereal is ready in moments, but bacon takes longer to cook. Then there is the impact on other industries. Do people in the cereal industry deserve to be employed more than people in the bacon industry? Which industry should I support? I don't even have the data regarding HOW MUCH the cereal industry benefits from me eating a bowl of cereal, or how much the bacon industry benefits from me eating a side of bacon. How can I compare two qualities I can't even quantify? And let's not forget the milk on the cereal. In addition to determining whether or not milk is healthy for me, how much that benefits the milk industry, and how much the people in the milk industry deserve my support, we have to factor in the fact that cows are put under brutal conditions in order to collect thier milk. Of course, the same goes for the pigs, and then they get killed. Of course, I really like bacon. So I need to come up with a scale that compares the value of cow happiness to pig happiness to my happiness. What trade-offs am I willing to make here? Does the fact that the pig gets put out of its misery count as a plus or a minus? Isn't bacon bad for me anyway? Deciding what to eat for breakfast (or any meal) is impossible. Help me!

Okay, here are round ones grades. To be honest, 22 different entries every single round is going to get old really fast, so I'm going to redo round format for two reasons; A) to shorten the contest since at this rate it's going to take forever to finish, and B) so that it doesn't take a week to get grades posted. I’m glad you changed your entry, wouldn’t want to give you a zero for not matching criteria. The old tribid, creative in what it is, not what it does. It is interesting, regardless. Nicely balanced; I could see each of these colors getting a one mana cost spell that does something like this, and tacking them all onto one card really doesn’t increase their power level any since they weren’t strong to begin with. It’s a simple spell that does that does one of three simple things; elegant-ish and not hard to understand. Obviously there’s no room for flavor text, and while I’m still a little unsure the name matches the mechanics, I can kind of see the association.

Switch target creature’s power and toughness until end of turn, not reverse. Also, should come before :symtap:. Not extremely creative or exciting, Dwarven Thaumaturgist and Merfolk Thaumaturgist come to mind, though I like the fact that it’s an artifact as compared to a creature, so you can use it the turn you cast it. I would like to have seen its activation cost be hybrid :symur:. It would have added nicely to the overall flavor of the card. I could easily see this getting printed, very simple and elegant. Flavor is a little quirky, but I like it. Overall a very solid first entry, just be sure to watch your wording and templating in the future.

The problem with the wording stems from the fact that who determines the ‘target opponent’ is left undefined. I think it should be worded ‘At the beginning of each player’s draw step, that player chooses target opponent. The first player puts X cards from his or her hand on the bottom of his or her library in any order, then draws that many cards, where X is the number of cards in the second player’s hand. I’m not quite sure but I’m fairly certain that’s correct. The oath cycle provides the example. Apart from wording, it’s fine. Not very exciting, being a throwback to Teferi's Puzzle Box but balanced enough if a little inelegant. The flavor is great; it’s not all that exciting but the reference to Teferi's Puzzle Box is once again present and lightheartedly fun.

Tiny wording nitpick; skeleton should be capitalized. Well it certainly is an eye catcher. A 4/4 with deathtouch for that spits out Drudge Skeletons when any creature dies. There are plenty of token producing creature but Ashdonar is certainly unique of its own accord. It might be a bit on the strong side, most 4/4 black creatures with cmc of 4 come with some sort of drawback even when they aren’t popping out regenerating tokens. I suppose legendary is enough of a drawback in a way. It works fine, and is executed well. Overall, a good start.

Wording and templating issues abound, as it stands it won’t even fit in a standard text box. Kind of reminds me of Otherworldly Journey but with a bigger payout. That said, to give a single creature what I assume is a permanent +5/+5 boost, first strike, and shroud you have to spend :2mana:, exile a creature, and wait three turns? That’s a lot of input for very little output. You would probably be better off just enchanting your creature with something like Armored Ascension. It’s clunky and confusing with possible memory issues sprouting up everywhere around it. The flavor’s not bad, but is once again hurt by the complexity of the card, and doesn’t quite fit with the name. You’ll have to work hard if you want to catch up before the elimination round.

The fact that it only triggers from leaving the battlefield definitely keeps it from being overpowered, but still leaves room for fun interactions with stuff like Momentary Blink. Love the flavor, not overly creative but it’s silly and fun. Making whales fly is something I could definitely see the Izzet attempting. Good job.

Interesting card, it can be a board wipe or an Insurrection or both. It really is just a Pyroclasm-like effect tacked onto Insurrection so it doesn’t get full creative marks, but it’s still very nice. I would have been inclined to say overpowered but the fact there aren’t likely to be many creatures to gain control of and that it doesn’t bestow haste balances it out quite nicely, along with that cmc of 7. Three simple effects makes for one simple card, nice and elegant, while still being interesting. Flavor is nice but feels like it would fit better on a white Wrath of God type card.

Slight wording issue, you need to be sure to specify which main phase. Sort of a Magus of the Vineyard with its own mana burn built in, prismatic mana is also very interesting. The only problem I have with this, is the fact that as long as they have something to sink the mana into, whether it be spells to cast or something like Shivan Dragon it basically does nothing. Outside of possibly being slightly underpowered, though, it’s nicely balanced. A little clunky, but still fairly easy to understand overall. Flavor text is nice, I like that it evokes a feeling similar to cards from Zendikar and Worldwake that referenced the Eldrazi ‘gods’ and it finishes up the card nicely.

Tune should be lowercase. Outside of that, though, good job on wording. Very interesting mechanic, it has no affect on itself which keeps it from being overpowered. That said, it’s a Common Cause or Might Sliver for :2mana:. I’m inclined to say that’s pretty strong any way you slice it, perhaps just a little too strong. Powerful but not without a bit of effort on the part of the user, plus it costs five mana to get it out so I think it’s fairly well balanced. At first I thought it might be too strong but now that I think about it, I’m not so sure what to think. On the one hand, it’s instant speed destruction in blue. On the other, it doesn’t do anything if nothing attacks. Also, can you use it during an opponent’s turn? I almost wish there was a comp rule entry with it. Easy enough to understand, sort of, and about as elegant as you can make a planeswalker. Love the name, love the abilities complimenting the name; the whole card is dripping with flavor. Very nice.

Slight wording error in your reminder text, should say ‘Creatures with caution can’t attack unless defending player controls no untapped creatures.’ Reminds me a little of the old ‘islandhome’ concept but more easily applied to a variety of creatures, or perhaps the opposite of Jackal Familiar. It’s the sort of thing I’d expect to see on Norin the Wary. Not exactly new, but still interesting. My major problem with it, is that something like Wall of Denial quickly makes anything with caution useless. As it stands, the card is a little weak but still very printable. French vanilla creatures are usually a good standard of elegance and yours is no exception. Flavor is decent, and kind of funny; I could picture someone say this. I would have given more points had the ability prevented the creature from blocking as well.

Should be worded ‘spells you cast’ and devour should be lowercase. Also the second ability should be ‘you may sacrifice opponents’ permanents as though they were under your control’ or something pretty close to that. This is kind of neat; it’s interesting to say the least. I’ve toyed with the idea of a +X ability in the past and I like the way you did yours. It has potential to be powerful but requires some effort to make it work. It looks underpowered at first, but if you’ve enough creatures to sack it can be quite difficult to kill. I’m not a fan of the ultimate, though I can see its potential with something like Squandered Resources or Vicious Betrayal. It lacks cohesion since its abilities feel like they would work together but oddly enough don’t. The flavor feels odd as well, but as a whole the card’s not bad.

Overall, I think it’s probably fairly balanced; it costs :3mana: to cast, is a paltry 1/1, and the mana it produces is restricted to artifact spells. If anything, it might be a little weak. How could a mana Myr not be elegant? Flavor is good. At first I didn’t like it much but having read it a few times it’s sort of grown on me. Older players will like the reference and fond memories of Mishra's Workshop if nothing else.

Vloros, Conjurer Sovereign
Planeswalker - Vloros {2} (Rare)

Second ability should be worded “You may play a card with converted mana cost X or less exiled with Vloros without paying its mana cost.” It’s interesting, kind of a planeswalker version of Kaho. The third ability is somewhat puzzling. I suppose if you use the first ability on yourself a few times it would work somewhat like a delayed draw spell. Still very strange for an ‘ultimate’, though I suppose Gideon Jura doesn’t have much of an ultimate either, and Vloros is rare as compared to the standard mythic. If nothing else, it certainly isn’t overpowered. It has three simple abilities that complement each other, as all planswalkers should, so it looks nice and clean, wording issue aside. The name fits fine with the abilities and it has decent overall flavor, though I still wish it was just a tad stronger.

Should be ‘You can’t cast spells’ and ‘put that card into your hand.’ Very interesting, and quite powerful considering it’s basically a repeatable Demonic Tutor. Not being able to cast spells is mitigated by a turn one or two Seal of Cleansing or Primordium though those sort of steps being required makes it a very nice Johnny card (Howling Mine looks fun). If anything, I’d say it probably is underpowered, especially when compared with the granddaddy of all black enchantments, Necropotence. Very simple, kind of reminds me of Null Profusion elegance-wise. Flavor text would have been nice, but the name and mechanic match well enough.

Should be ‘Exile all spells’. The red on this also bothers me, I could see various arguments in its favor so I won’t take off any points for that, but I would have preferred mono blue. While creative, it’s not all that exciting; kind of just a more powerful version of Swerve. The main argument that would come up involving this getting printed is the fact that it references the stack. The stack is sort of a vague thing that exists in the game but is seldom mentioned (Split second) kind of like lethal damage and the various game zones. It is elegant but you lose some points for it being a bit confusing, just a bit. The flavor is very good, one of the best I’ve read so far.

As you may have noticed, I'm picky about wording. However, I will not count off points for gramatical errors outside of capitalizing or not capitalizing when you aren't supposed to or when you are supposed to. Feel free to forget all the apostrophes and misspell all the words you want.

[In response to a thread about how hard grading is] Upon reading this, I've found myself completely unable to operate in the world. I tried to decide what to eat for breakfast, and pondered the vast consequences of my choice. How do I balance my dietary needs against my desire to eat good-tasting food? Help me!

Mine I mean. What is possibility? Is it possible for me to type these words with my tusks? No, because I don't have tusks. Although I am now tempted to go buy some - obviously not from poachers or whatever - and use them as typing apparatus. I could be the best secretary ever. "What's your words per minute sir?" "Well, only six, but I use these tusks to type them." "You're hired!" That was the interview. And is anyone else disappointed that "apparati" is not the plural form of apparatus? Enchantment (Rare)

Whenever a player casts a spell for the first time in a turn, counter that spell. If the spell is countered this way, exile it with one time counter on it instead of putting it into its owner's graveyard. If it doesn't have suspend, it gains suspend. (At the beginning of its owner's upkeep, remove a counter from that card. When the last is removed, the player plays it without paying its mana cost. If it's a creature, it has haste.)

@13th: For balancing reasons, I thought it had a drawback, since you had to remove his counters to create the skeletons^^ Also, I considered posting the first version of it which also had first strike but its effect would only trigger when he killed the creature himself and I'd like to ask you whic verson you like better. (since i plan to use him in my custom set.)

Anyways, let's start with round 2:

Whenever enchanted creature attacks or blocks, you lose 1 life for each counter on it.
