Did anyone else read "famous, original Masticore" and think of Famous Original Ray's Barbecue?  I must be hungrier than I thought.

Also I still say all three Masticores ought to be Artifact Creature - Manticore.

As far as the benefit of the rest of Magic is concerned, gold cards in Legends were executed perfectly. They got all the excitement a designer could hope out of a splashy new mechanic without using up any of the valuable design space. Truly amazing. --Aaron Forsythe's Random Card Comment on Kei Takahashi
If you're giving us a history of Masticores, why not briefly explain what "Masticore" means?
maybe he was the toronta champ because he got two mythics, good ones as well. seems like mythics seem to unbalance things
I would have hoped to learn a bit more about these, actually. Especially if it was Parente's idea to give his creature the signature three mouths. It's such a novel and crazy idea; completely out there - and yet so frightening and cool.

It's a bit sad to see how the creature has evolved on these pics, actually, because that multiple mouth-thing has been downplayed in later versions. In Jim Murray's version, the two lower mouths are merely loose, hanging add-ons to his lower jaw, and Whit Brachna completely misses the point and positions some of the mouths inside the outer mouth, just like in the creatures from Alien; something we've seen hundreds of times since then. Blah. Apart from that, it's a beautiful pic, of course.

If you're giving us a history of Masticores, why not briefly explain what "Masticore" means?

It's from "Mast-", Latin for "chew", + Manticore.
I was hoping to see the infamous Deep Analysis image, too. "The specimen appears to be broken," indeed!
Final Revels portrays kithkin? The figure on the right looks pretty nasty for a kithkin... the claws and fangs say it's a pale boggart...

I always assumed that the Boggart was dieing in the picture.  It seemed to be choking or something.  I never noticed the skull.
IMAGE(http://pwp.wizards.com/1205820039/Scorecards/Landscape.png)
Yeah, that's definitely a boggart in the foreground, although the background figure does appear to be a kithkin. It must really be some high to get boggarts and kithkin to celebrate together. Oddly, the skull looks like it belongs to a boggart, while the fragement of armor the rib cage is partially clad in looks as if it were kithkin craft. Perhaps this "celebration" has taken place here before.
so.....whats a Grad Prix?
I didn't even know that Final Revels existed, so thanks, I guess.

He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

I don't think there are any cards like that. There are things that prevent you from activating activated abilities, things that increase their cost, and things that counter them, but I don't think anything triggers from them specifically. There are things that trigger from targeting, so that might be relevant, but I can't think of anything that triggers from targeting a player. I'm almost positive there's nothing that triggers from damage being prevented.

Well played.

Seriously? WoTC is giving you Money and you're complaining about the land count in a pre-con deck?

Is WoTC's plan to release on of these a year? I see slivers came out Nov 20th last year and this one will be released Nov 19 this year.
a couple of misfires in the deck, but basically a great little burn deck.  Got some fun stuff in there, and besides it is Chain Lightning for crying out loud.  Didn't think we'd get to see that one again.
I got 2 of these on Star-City for Half-Price!  SCORE!!!

2X Chain Lightning
2x Grim Lavamancer
2x Reverberate

50x shiny mountains, of which I will keep maybe 15.

I think I basically just ordered a 50 dollar bill, eh?

Im trying to think how I want to rebuild the deck. Oh and I have 4 foil FNM Browbeats, which means the two I get in these decks can go to a worthy cause.

I am seriously considering scraping up the dough to get a third one of these, but by the time I do, it'll be up to 40 probably.  Still- it seems somewhat worth it.  4x Foil Lightning Bolts from a special set go for how much again?

:D Star-City had 300 of these yesterday. betting its 0 now.
Is that a second head on Darksteel Sentinel?  (on facing towards 'us' and one facing (our) left)

Of course, that's why it has Vigilance! (I guess)

Okay, whose idea was it to build a burn deck with 25 land?

My Standard RDW of pre-Scars season had 26 lands, and it was the correct call. And I wasn't playing any 4 or 5-drops main deck. I had a good amount of Landfall, though, but I digress. The Fire&Lightning deck has a 5-mana spell, an X-spell, two 4-mana spells and a good amount of 3-mana ones. It also has Figure of Destiny, which is many-hungry. I'd have made a little more of the lands nonbasic, but the amount itself looks about right. This is not your tournament Legacy burn deck with a few 3-mana spells and nothing more expansive; it can't run with 20 lands.

I love the way the deck was built and am really impressed by the overall value of the cards. I kinda wish I did like Darth and bought multiples from SCG while they were 17.99... Theyre 29.99 now. Oh well, they should be sold at reasonable price at my local shop. This is definitely has more incentive to it than the Slivers deck. The product will be undeniably sucessful.

is it just me or are the premium decks missing something?
silvers had to use changelings
and fire and lighting has more creatures then burn spells
and some of the cards in it are just like WTF
why is figure of destiny in there or jakkal pup?
is it just me or are the premium decks missing something?

Whole playsets.

Lol, that Jackal Pup is like a Necker Cube :P
These types of decks just don't do it for me. I love slivers and I never bothered picking up the sliver deck because it was all foil and I generally dislike foils as a whole.

As someone who plays Burn on a consistent basis, not only is this deck construction horrible but the big reasons for picking up this deck are now almost irrelevant.  To begin, this *isn't* Burn at all; Burn decks play very few, if any, creatures.  That's one of Burn's perks - you get virtual card advantage from your opponent having so many "kill or sacrifice a creature" cards in their deck that are useless.  This "Fire and Lightning" deck is actually Sligh, and Sligh consistently loses in Legacy to faster clocks like Zoo, Merfolk, Storm, (and Burn).  So the only reason you'd buy this deck is to rip it apart for your current (or under construction) Burn deck.  4 foil Bolts is fine enough, and if you want to use these foil lands instead of foil Zendikars or foil Unhinged, whatever's clever.  But cards you actually would want 4 foils of - like Price of Progress and Fireblast and Chain Lightning - nope, just singletons (which is most of the deck, hence making the deck entirely unreliable).  So now if I want to upgrade my Burn deck to foils, I need to either buy 4 decks @ $120 + tax, or get the cards individually which will end up costing me more.  Of course, that's all Wizards' master plan in the first place - don't put too many "good" cards in there, otherwise we won't get as much money overall.  As an example of why I think this deck isn't the best, this is my Burn deck below which has won me a few local Legacy tournaments and definitely gotten me into top 8's in more.  I won't put the SB here because everyone's SB depends on their meta.  Compare and contrast my Burn to Wizards' "Fire and Lightning".

The critics and complainers about the Fire and Lightning decklist are missing the point. The purpose of the deck is not to be a tuned, tournament quality deck, but to provide foil copies of a lot of fun cards. For casual constructed, this deck is like a greatest hits list of the cards you are constantly using. It's not even intended as a pure speed burn deck, its much more midrange. This list is about perfect, as far as I'm concerned.
I agree with sulfuricmage. People are forgetting that this isn't Premium Deck: Red Deck Wins. If people aren't going to buy it because it's not a ready made, Standard constructed, uber deck, then that just means there will be more for the new players and those who haven't been around long enough to have a play set of Jackal pups.
PS:  remove the Tom and add in Tattermunge Maniac as the "updated" Jackal Pup.  Would be silly and fun and wrong, but also kind of right.
no i don't want an uber red deck
i want a deck filled with burning and shocking like the name promises
In spite of their superficial similarities, Greater and Lesser Werewolf play quite differently. Lesser Werewolf has a kind of "first first strike" combined with proto-wither, while Greater Werewolf has a unique combination of wither and rampage.

There is lots of that. I'm not going to argue the contents of the deck. Buy it or don't. I will be because I have friends who are just getting into magic and this will be a great way to should off an archtype. WoTC promises nothing with a title.

This is a problem I've had with a few of their special releases. They give it some awesomely flavorful name, but in the spirit of making a balanced deck or due to a lack of cards fitting the theme, about half of it just doesn't fit the theme. When I clicked the link and they showed the Jackal Pup, I immediately said to myself, "Why would they make new art for that? How is that fire or lightning?"

I admit I wish they had kept a little closer to the theme of fire and lightning (and included a few foil magma jets), but I don't think it's a bad deck. It's got a nice collection of foils that can be used in a variety of decks- I can use some of it to make a burn deck look cooler, and some of the others to pimp out a red EDH (at least, I hope that's why they included the Hammer)

I, um, may have neglected to edit that out when I copied the text from the previous Sketches Arcana.

Or maybe we're having another Halloween this weekend. Which world do you want to live in?

Personally I would love it if Halloween were observed again this weekend, so I could correct for my previous error of blowing off my favorite holiday because I was tired and/or lazy.  But I doubt your authority extends as far as getting Minnesotans to reup their observances of the other week for my benefit.  *wink*

I actually used Cyclopean Mummy in a deck many years ago. It was, at one time, the only 2-power creature for that you could leave back to block without getting hit for 2 damage a turn. I was actually a little sad to see it go, but not so much that I didn't notice all of the other ridiculous decisions made with regard to Fifth Edition.
