The other potential pitfall with the small-fish-in-a-big-pond ideology is that trying to show players that the world is so much bigger than they had supposed risks invalidating the importance of their earlier work in the campaign. As exciting as it can be to get caught up in the wars of gods and demons, being informed that the kingdom you spent 20 levels trying to save is really an inconsequential backwater in the grand scheme of things robs the victory of its meaning, and risks divorcing the previous narrative of the game from what is to come. Just as epic characters should grow into an increasing realization of their power, the epic storyline should make players realize that the events they have participated in are even more important than they realized, not less so.
