This thread is for discussion of this week's Savor the Flavor, which goes live Wednesday morning on magicthegathering.com.
machina isn't a made up word, its from latin. and its pronounced mah-keen-a
I kind of like Chrome.  The metal is typically known as Chromium, not chrome, which is more the term for the Chromium alloy used to give a shiny look to many objects.  A metal covering to make things shiny is a pretty good metaphor for the Metalcraft ability.  A downside, however, is that since Chromium allows can make so many different colors, it shares a common root with words like Chroma, which is already a Magic ability word.  Too bad.

Awesome article! Laughing very nice to see the flavor process.

My favorite is Regalia. It doesn't sound silly, it sounds magically!

But how dare you consider Rigging & Assembly? They're taken

Regalia makes me think of Knights...

Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch. YAY COLOR IDENTITY

Yeah that's true Regalia doesn't really fit on Mirrodin.

So here's hoping that Regalia is one of those "perhaps to be used later" ones Tongue out

Agreed! I think it is a great and evocative word.

That was a simple concept that made for a neat article.  Nice job!

Also, a couple times in there you got quite close to both Steamflogger Boss and Moriok Rigger, but never quite made the connection.

I think metalcraft was the right choice. I'm amazed there haven't been any Raiments yet, but it's definitely more of an equipment card than an artifact keyword. 'Artismither' should never see the light of day again. Seriously.

P.S. I pronounce it 'mah-ki-na'

Chromeo didn't get a shout out?

I don't think anyone's gonna question your choice of Metalcraft among those words, Doug. The vast majority of the other stuff is either lame or just doesn't fit. The two closest ones in my mind are Regalia and Synthesis, but Regalia, like many others, feels to me like it should be about equipment and not just any kind of artifact, and Synthesis, while I wouldn't have minded, also has its issues that you mentionned yourself. No, really, Metalcraft is perfect.

I really liked this article. It's a simple concept that made for a great read. It's always interesting to see the thought process behind flavor. It's a lovely change from background stories (not that I don't like those, it's just nice to see something different.)

After the official forums lost most of their functionality, a once vibrant community of Vorthos was wiped out.The survivors founded a new place to discuss all things concerning with the art, flavor and storylines of Magic: The Gathering. Come join us.

I'm disappointed Contraption isn't on the list.
I am absolutely baffled why Metalcraft was chosen over "Artifice." I have been baffled by this ever since the first metalcraft card was previewed. Artifice means exactly what it sounds like: play with some artifacts. And it sounds way cooler.
AsI was reading the beginning of the list of words, one popped up into my head that I thought would be mentioned eventually: Ionize(d).

I don't think it sounds too bad, but may be lacking the magicy feeling that metalcraft has. Though it does have the real-world type connection that Doug mentioned.
So, why isn't auriok edgewright an artificer?
OMG click HERE! OMG! How to autocard and use decklist format
--->
For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

I like storm crow because I really like crows in real life, as an animal, and the card isn't terribly stupid, but packs a good deal of nostalgia and also a chunck of the game's history. So it's perhaps one of the cards I have most affection to, but not because "lol storm crow is bad hurr hurr durr".

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

Don't see how that could possibly be related. More likely they're having trouble with the software that publishes articles.
