Star Wars vehicles

Hi folks,

Is there a line of Star Wars toys or models that's more in less in scale with WotC's character-scale miniatures? I'm particularly interested in Clone War and Republic-era vehicles, like the LAAT/i and the AT-TE and such. It's a shame WotC didn't do more vehicle minis. An AT-TE mini to go along with the AT-AT would've been really cool.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Remember I'm a "purist," Pukunui. I just state the scales. And I say that in good humor.
But, as I have mentioned before, a number of official SWM pieces are too small, as are the tiles representing vehicles/craft in certain products, so yeah; the Revell LAAT works just fine in this sort of "relative scale (to borrow from WotC)" that flies for the minis. As such, the AT-TE would be fine - when paired against the WotC Hailfire or Homing Spider Droid. BUT: put it next to the new Revell AAT, which IS close to absolute scale, and it'll look stupid.
So, mebbe for the sake of visual balance, perhaps the Action Fleet version of the AAT is actually the better choice!
EDIT: WotC's AT-AT and Revell's aren't identical, but very close. For gaming, if you have one you don't need the other. Both are expensive - but Wizards' has the card & map!

Hmm. Well, I dunno. I bought two of the Revell LAATs. I'm not sure if I want to buy the Revel AT-TE though. I might just get my crafty player to build a cardstock AT-TE using Momir Farooq's model. Too bad he doesn't have an AAT model as well.

If you want a to scale of the minis AAT, go with the transformers one. Here are some posts on another board that show it alongside SW minis.

As for botwt, the perfect sized Millenium Falcon for the minis is the action figure sized MF, but not the one that was released recently and has han and Chewie figures included, as that one was scaled up for the action figures. Likewise the best Slave I and Imperial Shuttle for the minis are the action figure sized ones.

GREAT grassy plains setup, Halberkill! I love the trebuchets the Gungans are using; there IS, however, an actual gungan catapult. It was for the action gigures, but is OOP.
The AATs look like the same size as the Action Fleet, but of course a lot easier to get. And you're definitely right about the Slave-I: if you guys can pick one up, DO. Perfect size, and owing to the ship's design it's not even "tweaked" for action figures. Looks juuust right.

Great mods, great pics. I've always loved the Grassy Plains Battle.

But when it comes to action figure toys in SWM I'm always annoyed by the fact that, while the size of the vehicle is more accurate, the vehicles are never in scale with them selves. The Falcon's cockpit is too big, the two triangles sticking off the front are too small, etc.

I played a SWM game several years ago at Rock Con in Rockford, Il.

The guy just used minis as miniatures for his scenario and made up his own rules. He had all of Mos Eisley layed out, including Docking Bay 94, with a Falcon Model that, as far as I could tell, was perfect.

But I'm sure Imperator will know exactly what model I'm talking about and now tell me that it's really about 12 scale feet too small.

Great pictures! I already have 2 of the Action Fleet ones, but might get a few of these in blue. Also would really like the Falcon, Slave I and the shuttle but they're just so damn expensiv Frown. And i would rarely use them so not worth the money in my case.

Regarding the AT-TE, it is too small to use with the minis in my oppinion. I just had to get one to see for myself. So this is still one i'm hoping we'll get a better version of at some point.

Hey, twelve feet's a lot!! Wink

Actually though, there IS a discussion on Starship Modeler about that very subject, because we're looking at trying to match up some model kits (whose scales are notoriously random), and we really can't find a definitive, official size for the Millenium Falcon. Even Lucas has admitted that the stage prop was smaller than the internal set that was supposed to go into it.

SO... with that in mind, with Star Wars if it LOOKS good, then it is good! Especially for gaming.

First off, I have to say this is Ghengis Ska's set up, not mine. He is a great guy and has inspired me for things to use with SWM. He used to post here a lot a long time ago.

But when it comes to action figure toys in SWM I'm always annoyed by the fact that, while the size of the vehicle is more accurate, the vehicles are never in scale with them selves. The Falcon's cockpit is too big, the two triangles sticking off the front are too small, etc.

All of that scale confusion is probably because the real-life falcon (as in the physical set that was built of it) used in the movies was in 2 different scales. The inner set of the falcon that included the cockpit was twice the size of the outer set of the falcon, such as when chewie was working on it outside. Unless you had super-spatial technology, you could not fit the inner set in the outer set. Put that in your scale converter and compute it.  (Darn, trumped by Imperator on that bit of info.)

There are similar issues with the AT-AT, and probably even moreso with the statement in the visual dictionary that LAAT/i gunships are the same size as the LAAT's. You can't fit an AT-TE in a regular sized LAAT, it would have to be larger.

Though granted the Millenium Falcon toy has enlarged features for action figure play, the shuttle and slave I are right on.

Halber
Ok, I thought I may try and add to this thread by doing some relative scale comparisons of thing that may be useful for SWM. This will allow you to consider what you have available and maybe even give some new suggestions or inspirations.

I will start off with the LaaT Gunship.

In this overhead picture, starting from 12 and going clockwise, there is the SW Pocketmodels store display, Revell Clone Wars model, Code 3 die-cast model, and Galoob action fleet.

The following pictures are side shots with the same clone from the Clone Wars mini set in all of them.

Naturally the Revell one is currently cost effective and the easiest to come by, but the Pocketmodel one, if you aren't bothered too much by it's 2-dimensional aspects, is the closest to scale, as well as fitting a reasonable amount of minis. I have 3 of these and they cost me from 12 to 20 USD each, it's just that they are not easy to come by, being that they were store displays for the now defunct pocket model game.

Halber

How do you use the hide feature here?

Ok, here are comparisons of the Transformers AAT with the Action Fleet ones. I originally though the AF tanks were smaller, but upon comparing then directly, they are seemingly the same mold save for a few minor differences (as well as major differences like being able to transform).

The transformers tank is on top, the action fleet is on the bottom.

Here is a comparison with the regular Action Fleet tank and the R/C release. The RC one's hatch doesn't open, and it's main gun shoots off with a spring loaded action.

Here is a side view of R/C AF, Transformers, and regular AF, showing their differences in rear support.

IMAGE(http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/Halber_Kill/sw_minis/DSC01814.jpg)

Halber
Now for the AAT Trade Federation Tank's scale. First I'll start with actual size comparisons set up by the designers of TPM for the film.

IMAGE(http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/Halber_Kill/sw_minis/small_ships1.gif)

IMAGE(http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/Halber_Kill/sw_minis/small_ships2.gif)

Notice how a person can stand under a hovering tank. Then I will have a side by side comparison of the Japanese trading kit models that are in 1/144 scale. This is to get a general size feel from them. I trust the accuracy of the scale among the vehicles because it is Fine Molds who created of these kits for distribution by F-Toys and FM pays attention to detail and scale.

IMAGE(http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/Halber_Kill/sw_minis/DSC01805.jpg)
IMAGE(http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/Halber_Kill/sw_minis/DSC01804.jpg)

Now an overhead side by side comparison of the tanks and the SW minis AT-AT. (yes technically the AT-AT is too small, but not if you go by the databank's size statement, which is incorrect, I can point you to a website that goes into greater detail if you like, but for this case I will assume the scale fits.)

IMAGE(http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/Halber_Kill/sw_minis/DSC01810.jpg)

Here is a side view with the TF tank and some minis for comparison. Notice that the minis almost fit under the tank, making the scale good as far as eyeballing it goes. Also notice that the tank and AT-AT seem like good scaled up versions of the 1/144 scale vehichles.

IMAGE(http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/Halber_Kill/sw_minis/DSC01819.jpg)

Closer shot of the AAT with minis.

IMAGE(http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/Halber_Kill/sw_minis/DSC01820.jpg)

I really like the TF tank because it's hatch opens and fits a SWM commander droid (if you remove it's base first)

Now for a substitution if you can't afford the SWM AT-AT, but somehow can afford legos by means of some black friday sale or something.

I use the lego version sometimes because you can open up the sides and have minis do battle on the inside too. But ultimately the SWM one looks better for external combats. SW Pocketmodels also has an AT-AT store display of the same scale which can be had for about $20, but it is made of cardboard, not foamboard like the others, and is fairly flimsy.

While on the topic of legos, the lego AT-TE is fairly decent sized to go along with the minis.

THere are other lego kits that work well in SWM scale, but I could not get access to all of them in my basement. THe Imperial landing shuttle, The Twilight (Anakins ship from the CW Animated series), and Jabba's sail barge all work.

It looks to be a bit larger than it should be to be in scale, but still in the good enough range. Unfortunately the hatch doesn't open.

Halber

Okay i seriously need one of those Code 3 Gunships, it's really a nice looking model! Pretty expensive sadly.

I have a small update for those that are not too picky when it comes to correct scale. I just got these Titanium Speeder Bikes in and based them on some WotC bases. They're notably larger than the WotC Speeders but i think i'm going to be using them for scenario play at some point anyways. I'll post some comparison pictures within a few days, so you can see the difference.

From left to right we have:

Storm Commando on Speeder Bike
Blizzard Force Speeder Bike
Luke Skywalker on Speeder Bike
Paploo on stolen Speeder Bike

(Ones i don't have are Leia, Scout Trooper and Camo Scout Trooper. Might be a few more but these are the ones i know exist)

Nice bikes!
Hey guys, is THIS an actual ship from the Clone Wars or something? I haven't gotten that far in the series. I think it's totally cool-looking.

The vessel is the newly-released Republic Light Cruiser from Odyssey Slipways. They're doing it in three scales: 1/10,000, 1/4200 (matches AMT Star Destroyer and both BSGs) and my fave, 1/2256 (which I bought) that matches the Revell Venator. It's two-piece resin and will be 3 1/8" long.

I'm glad you guys like it!
It really wasn't that hard to do, just required a lot of time & patience, letting coats of paint dry before the next masking. I just use regular "Magic Tape" for the masks.
Of course, if you don't normally model and so don't have 'em on hand, then you also have to pay for four-five cans of spray - which cost as much as the kit!

Nice paint job on that shuttle Imperator! Love the decals and the weathering (maybe you could get a job at Revell and teach them a few tricks eh?). The model itself is pretty nice as well, but it was kind of small scale right?
The model isn't small, but the scale is 1/120th. Large subject, I guess.

Your wish is my command, pukunui.

Besides the AT-TE, I have placed the Revell AT-AT. The WotC version would be more useful, but, ummmm...
I don't know where it is. Honestly.
But the two are very close to the same size.
Measuring the AT-TE:
Actually very hard, since there are a wide number of references - and do they include the mass driver? The AP lasers? Nothing's clear.
OVERALL, though, both sourcewise and just visually, it would seem the poster image is anywhere from spot-on to actually a bit too BIG. Possibly anywhere from 1/49th to 1/43d, vs WotC's 1/54th or so. This varies from most of the WotC illustrations, which are way too eentsy. Nothing is certain with Star Wars, though!
But in general, I'd say the illustration - not the model - is about the size we need.

wandered off.

Ooh, yes, the Revell model looks tiny next to the one on the map. Oh well. One of my players has found a cardstock AT-TE on some French site that he's going to build for me. I've sent him a picture of the map so he can size it to that one.

As you say, though, WotC's illustrations aren't always the correct size either - for instance, the artist who did the maps for Dawn of Defiance clearly thought that vehicles were all supposed to fit inside their fighting space, so just about all of the starships shown on the maps are too small.

Just got my very own Luke's Landspeeder from a minis trade. The quality is superb. I was surprised, since the Alliance & Empire set is overall rather crappy (which in turn continues to surprise me, since it was supposedly an anniversary celebration set). One question: is Luke's landspeeder really meant to be that tiny compared to a flash speeder, or is the scale off between those two minis?
