This thread is for discussion of this week's Building on a Budget, which goes live Wednesday morning on magicthegathering.com.

This is without a doubt my personal favorite of any article you have written so far.  I dont know what is was, but they way you discussed cards and varous ideas/uses even if they werent in the inal list was great.  To be honest I would love more articles like this from you.
I like fun, but competitive decks. So I might not play what is optimal but they have normally been tested to have a 2/3 winrate.
Darn, I was hoping I would be able to trade for a few more lodestone golems on the cheap before people remembered how good it is in an artifact deck.
The myr deck > the squirrel deck

Gotta love these silly pseudo-tribals!
That chick has huge arms.

There seems to be a huge emphasis in the Myr. I guess they are going TOPDECK now.
"or something to do while your DM is having a BM."

Um...ew.
Darn, I was hoping I would be able to trade for a few more lodestone golems on the cheap before people remembered how good it is in an artifact deck.

While Lodestone Golem is a pretty good creature in its own right, its secondary effect is only going to helpful if:

A. You have few, if any, non artifact cards and they are fairly cheap.

and

B. Your opponent is running mostly non artifact cards.

Otherwise it is going to be a hindrance to you (if A is not met) or a slightly better Juggernaut (if B is not met).

Seeing as artifact based decks should become more common, Lodestone Golem probably might not help too much.  It is still fairly strong sideboard tech in an artifact deck against non artifact decks.

Regarding Myrsmith, its a pretty good card except for one thing, IT'S WHITE.  Why does white seem to be the primary color helping artifacts now?  Granted we are seeing only a portion of the set but it seems at the moment that white is the color most aligned with artifacts rather than blue. Hopefully blue picks up some pretty good artifact helper cards later.  Right now we have Grand Architect, Trinket Mage, and Shape Anew.

Awesome deck! I look forward to building something similar.

FYI - There were a few typo's in the decklist though:
- you put a "G" in "Palladium"
- you listed the Battlesphere under "other cards"

Hope that helps

~ Tim
EDIT: it seems a shame to build a deck that can go to infinite mana without a game winning X spell to make the most of it...

I am Blue/White Reached DCI Rating 1800 on 28/10/11. :D

I wouldn't be surprised to see artifact decks put Lodestone Golem in the main deck and sideboard it out against other artifact decks. Decks that actually use more artifacts than not will probably be the minority for a while yet.

I'm kind of surprised to read about the golem here - what's a card like that doing in Worldwake, not a generally artifact-oriented block? How did I not know about it already? Not that I expect myself to recognize every card, of course, but if nothing else I'm surprised I haven't seen people talking about it in connection with Mirrodin. I think it says a lot about how strong creatures are in recent years that a card like that isn't used much. A 5/3 for 4 mana that slows down all spells... is too expensive for fast aggro, too small for bomby aggro, and control has much stronger win conditions to choose from. Wow.

Stoic Rebuttal is a metalcraft Counterspell, and while Volition Reins doesn't directly mention artifacts it's one of very, very few Mind Control-like effects out of dozens that work on artifacts. Sure, though, you're right overall, we've seen more white things that directly help artifacts than any other color.

But then, white and green are usually the "helping" colors, and green hates artifacts so it wouldn't be doing too much. Blue likes artifacts and uses them a lot, and we're seeing some of that and I hope and assume we'll see more, but doesn't actually help them.
liking this alot, Ive been looking for ideas for myr tribal decks and this one is more my style then the others I've seen.

EDIT= Dont think its gonna be very budget though, I can see battlespheres and galvanisers being fairly expensive

Expensive?  Doubtful.  Unless youre opinion of expensive is a couple bucks.  They may start out pricey but im pretty sure they willquickly drop.  Especially on mtgo.  I wouldn't be shocked to see them available for under a dollar a piece within a month.  The golem will probably be the most expensive card in the deck to be honest.

There were plenty of white artifact spells in the original mirrodin, the just dealt more with equipment.  Equipment does not seem to be the same huge theme like it was in it's debut so white as to work with other artifacts as well...

I'm deffinately going to build a myr deck. There are just so many possibilities and can be very powerful. It'll be interesting what the other support cards will be during the rest of the set.

For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

I really don't think Scars will reshape the metagame so much that a majority of people are going to play artifact-centered decks, at least not with only one set out. This means that Lodestone Golem is going to be an hinderance for the majority of opponents, to varying degrees of course, but still. And you know, it kinda also is a 5/3 for 4 mana. Even if the second ability doesn't do that much against some opponents, it is a sizable threat. That makes it a very, very maindeckable card. With that said, it might fight for space against things that are more synergistic in the deck or that fight the metagame better, in which case I could see it as a sideboard card against decks it hurts more, but I really think it's more of a main deck kind of card.

Ya, I find it very interesting how they seem to have pushed the more aggressive kind of artifact decks  towards green and white, as opposed to what they did in Mirrodin. Green had the least interaction with artifacts and had the most artifact hate cards, and White interacted pretty much only with Equipment, so the aggressive artifact deck proper, Affinity, was a blue, black, and/or red deck. But this time, with Metalcraft giving huge undercosted creatures to Green and with cards like Tempered Steel in White, they seem to want to create something different, and at the same time avoid broken interaction with Affinity decks in older formats and casual play. Personaly, I think it is a very well thought strategy, especially since White and Green are supposed to be the best at aggressive creature decks. Blue will still have a lot of interaction with artifacts, but in a more "tricky", control-oriented way.

Some people must be frustrated that the rotation prevents interaction with the Esper cards of Shards block, but I still look forward to mix the cards in the new Extended and in casual. White had some good aggressive artifact creatures in that block, namely Court Homunculus and Ethersworn Canonist, that would really shine in an artifact white weenie kind of deck with Tempered Steel.

The Myrsmith and Galvanizer are uncommon, and the Battlesphere is a 7 CMC creature with no evasion or protection. It might turn out to be a pretty good card, especially with that "X damage to defending player" ability, but I really doubt it'll go for more than a dollar after the set has been out for a month. I have no clue about Tempered Steel; it'll be good, especially by the end of the block, but will it be that good? I agree, the golem will probably the most expensive part. It's already around $2 and will probably climb. Still, this deck is definitely more budget-friendly than most.
What about putting in a few Mountains and a playset of Fireballs to utilize the infinite mana combo?  There's not much X-costed spells to abuse in the upcoming standard format.
an x spell is not needed, and neither is splinter tiwn in this deck.  A couple of myr propagators will set the combo off just fine.  Also, the mana base can go down to 22 lands, and battle sphere and lodestone should be 3 ofs,  Battlesphere, even with our mana accel is a big burden on our mana base and lodestone does not directly interact with the deck.  We then add in either of two things.  1) myr resevoir- a 3 cost artifact that can give us a myr token, can power us into battlesphere, and can get us back any myr we want to reinterect with myrsmith what is not to love, I will be running 2.  And second, myr propagator WARNING: Myr propagator is not a standard card, and will not bring you into any FNM top 4s, however the combo possible with him, without much extra work is great, and he allows us to reset up after a feild clear without much of a hand.
