L7 (2,600gp): +2 Farbond Spellblade Glaive (AV 2)
TOTAL: 145,000gp

Discussion:

Here is where the build fully comes together and begins to really shine. With the addition of Dread Reaping Class feature your MBA attacks are now effectively Cleaves with out the restriction of the extra damage being against another target, and your Cleave Power now deals Strength Damage to all adjacent enemies as well as its other effects. This Feature effectively makes your Combat Challenge Attacks Deal extra Strength Modifier worth of Damage making them much more deadly. Meanwhile thanks to Reaping Cleave and Impending Doom Style Cleave not only deals solid damage to all adjacent enemies but also marks them all making it the best At-Will multi mark in a fighter’s arsenal. If that wasn’t enough thanks to the feat Heavy Blade Opportunity you can use Cleave on your OA attacks making them that much more brutal. Finally for items you pick up an upgrade to your Iron Armbands of Power and call it a great level.

Level 17

TOTAL: 213,000gp

Discussion:

At this level you pick up Mountain Breaking Blow a nice single target power helping you to isolate a single target, deal significant damage, and stay right on top of them all at the same time. When it comes to items you upgrade your Steadfast Amulet and save the rest of you money for later.

L10 (5,000gp): Eager Hero’s Tattoo (Heroic Tier) (AV 2)
L10 (5,000gp): Strikebacks (AV)
L7 (2,600gp): Rushing Cleats (AV)
TOTAL: 492,600gp

Discussion:

At this level you pick up another way to use your powerful Cleave At Will with Polearm Gamble which increases the number of ways enemies can trigger OA attacks from you which since to Heavy Blade Opportunity increase the number of times you can potentially use Cleave in a round. Polearm Gamble also combines well with Longhand Student allowing you to better control how many enemies are near you, and preventing you from getting overwhelmed by shear numbers. With items you pick up an upgrade to your backup weapon and pick up a new item in the form of the Eager Hero’s Tattoo giving you a bit of Temp HP after each extended rest. The Breakdown

The Core Concept:

The core of the Super Cleaver is the interaction of the Dread Reaper Class Feature Reaping Cleave, and Impending Doom Style. With these two elements you are able to turn Cleave into the best At Will Multimark a fighter can get. From there there are many ways you can go for the build presented above we focus on a few key elements in attempt to create a powerful primary defender.

Part 1 - Auto Damage:

The point here is to create a situation where enemies don’t want to be next to you because you are constantly dealing damage to them. You get this damage in multiple ways. Cleave itself gives you Strength Modifier auto Damage on a hit, meanwhile Slashing Storm adds in Wisdom Modifier damage. Your powers also come into play in the form of daily stances like Rain of Steel, Unyielding Avalanche, Reaper’s Stance, and Force of Battle. Finally you use Heavy Blade Opportunity and Polearm Gamble to give you more ways to attack to potentially use Cleave in a round with each use adding dealing Strength Modifier Auto Damage on a hit.

Part 2 - Lure/Stickiness

The point here is to first draw enemies adjacent to you and then make it hard for them to escape so that you Auto Damage can do its job of killing them. For the Lure part of the equation you rely on two things. First you rely on your powers in the form of Come and Get it, and Warrior’s urging, and second you relay on positioning so you can present a roadblock. Once you have them adjacent to you they will find it difficult to escape due to your Combat Challenge and Combat Superiority class features, both of which will stop the targets movement and come in for solid damage. This is thanks to Pinning Challenge and you multiple multimark powers, and Combat Superiorities built in features.

Part 3 - Durability

With a focus on Lure and Stickiness you also want to make sure your ability to take a hit is intact. To this end the build relies on a combination of items, feats, and powers to get respectable defenses, HP, and Surges. This starts with your very first two feats Toughness and Hafted Defense. Meanwhile your Power Selection helps here with Comeback Strike, Reactive Surge, Victorious Surge, and Iron Warrior allowing you to get healing when you really need it. Finally for the build items play a fairly large roll here with Agile Armor being a key component by helping to secure your AC despite the loss of a shield. Meanwhile items like Ring of Free Time, Shadow Band, Eager Hero’s Tattoo, and Belt of Mountain Endurance all help to push you over the edge, however they are not really required. Finally Polearm Gamble and Longhand Student combine to help you regulate the amount of pressure you are taking helping to prevent being overwhelmed. [/spoiler]

Part 4 - Single Target Lockdown

While your primary tactics revolve around multiple targets, not all combats have multiple enemies. To that end you want to also have some way to deal with a single target with this build we use Longhand Student, Polearm Gamble, and Draconic Arrogance to handle these situations. This allows you to at will deal solid damage, push the target, mark them, and knock them prone. Assuming you move back up to them this creates a very solid way to isolate and punish a single target if need be.

The Catch-22

This build creates a interesting Catch-22 based on the builds Auto Damage and Stickiness. Opponents you get adjacent to you are presented with 2 options. Option 1 engage you and continue to take the auto damage each round, while not being able to engage you squishier allies. Option 2 they can attempt to get away from you and provoke your OA/CC attacks which deal considerable damage and can interrupt their movement. Neither of these Options is a good choice for your enemies health and so your enemy is forced into a lose-lose situation.

Key Items and Alternate Options

Overall the build relies on two key items to function effectively; all other magic items can be switched out to personal tastes or what you can get your hands on with out much loss in overall power.

The first and most important of these items is Agile Armor this armor helps to keep your AC up to a respectable point with out using a shield. Now if you can not get this item you can survive with a switch around of the build. If you move some feats around and put a couple points into Constitution you can fit in Plate Armor Proficiency and Specialization into the build. This should allow you to pick up a respectable AC with out the need to rely on a particular magic item to function.

The Second item that the build relies on is Rushing Cleats. This item allows you to get to the required 2 square push/slide to trigger Polearm Momentum. Now if you are unable to get this item you have a few things you can do. First you can try to get a Ring of Ramming or Controlling Weapon to get to the 2 square push. If you are unable to obtain any magical aid in this area you can incorporate the feat Spear Push to get you to the required push 2 for Polearm Momentum.

In both cases if you are unable to get the specific item you have to restructure the build, but you keep the core concept and abilities while remaining an effective character.

Tactics

The Core Tactics

The Super Cleaver is an Isolationist Defender. By that I mean you attempt to defend your allies by locking them down and simply keeping enemies away from his allies. You also do have a solid Combat Challenge which should help to discourage enemies from attacking your allies assuming they have that option.

Early Heroic Tier - Levels 1-5

At this point in you life you are about single target lockdown with Weapon Master’s Strike, and several encounters that limit a single targets movement being you go to tactic. Basically you pick the most dangerous enemy you can see and try engage him while you do your best to draw fire from other enemies as well.

Late Heroic Tier to Early Paragon Tier - Level 6-15

Here you begin to start focusing on 1-2 targets with the upgrade to Cleave from Impending Doom style you can at will mark 2 enemies. Meanwhile you have begun to pick up powers which allow you to put pressure on multiple targets. Basically your tactics at this point haven’t change much but now it is try to engage the two biggest threats. You are also still able to effectively lockdown a single target if need be. Also with Come and Get It you can draw enemies to you instead of having to always go to them.

Late Paragon Tier - Level 16-20

Here is where the build fully shifts focus to multi target lockdown as you pick up the pieces for at will mutimarking and start really picking up a nice array of Daily and Encounter close burst and auto damage effects. At this point you try to use Come and Get It to pull in as many enemies as possible adjacent, and then pound them into the dust while making it difficult for them to escape. Even with all of the focus on multi targets you have at this point you do not lose the ability for single target tricks. Also in these levels is when you begin to pick up some of the specialized tactics described later on.

Epic Tier - Level 21-30

At these levels your tactics haven’t changed from Late Paragon much. However your ability to pull these tactics off gains multiple boost that create for a very impressive array of abilities. Overall the feel of the character changes as all your Auto Damage effects fully come online and you really start pounding multiple enemies into dust.

Special Tactics

Polearm Gamble + Heavy Blade Opportunity + Long Hand Student

I touch on this combo in the Breakdown Section, but here we can talk in a bit more detail tastes or what you can get your hands on with out much loss in overall power.  The most basic use of this combo is to generate more ways to use Cleave in a given round which in turn increases your Auto Damage potential. However it has a secondary use an that is to keep enemies away from you. Yes that is correct a defender sometimes wants to keep enemies away from it. There are two situation that come into play with a certain amount of regularity.

The first is if you DM is employing Mob tactics in a attempt to overwhelm you with numbers. The toughest defender can only take so much pressure and this combo helps to control the amount of pressure you take. The second situation is when you have already been overwhelmed, or just gotten unlucky and have to disengage from the enemies this tactic willl help you stay disengaged until you are ready to get back into the fight.

The Super Cleave - Master’s Blade + Force of Battle + Martial Supremacy + Action Point

If you have a Ring of Free time you can use the combo all in one turn. If you don’t have a ring of free time you must spend a round setting it up. Assuming the ring of free time the round goes something like this.

Show

Action Breakdown

Free Action - Activate Ring of Free Time’s Encounter Power to Get 2 Minor Actions
Minor Action 1 - Activate Force of Battle
Minor Action 2 - Activate Master’s Blade’s Daily Power to be able to use 2 stance until end of encounter
Move Action: Activate Martial Supremacy to allow a reroll on your At Will and MBA attacks
Standard Action: Use Warrior’s Urging to pull targets adjacent and do a Close Burst 1 attack
Free Action - Spend an AP to take an extra action, and deal 9 damage to all adjacent enemies
AP Action: Use Reaping Whirlwind for two Close Burst 1 attacks
Free Action: Any enemy that starts its turn adjacent to you is hit with Cleave.
No Action: All targets that are still next to you at the beginning of you next turn take 6 points of damage

This potentially means all target with in 4 squares of you take 16d4+84 damage + 9 points of damage for each other target, and another 6 points of damage if they don’t move away from you.

Damage Breakdown

Warrior’s Urging - +26 to hit dealing 6d4+18, Close Burst 1
Reaper’s Action - Strength Modfier Auto Damage (9 points)
Cruel Reaper - +26 to hit dealing 6d4+15, Close Burst 1, 2 times
Cleave - +27 to hit, Can Reroll Attack, Dealing 6d4+30, 9 points of damage to all other adjacent targets.
Slashing Storm - Wisdom Modifier Auto Damage (6 Points)

Overall this tactic can go along way toward helping you quickly eliminate a large portion of the battlefield. Also note that the benefit of Force of Battle and Martial Supremacy last until the end of the encounter meaning that your damage each round is boosted drastically even after the initial nova round.

What has Changed

This variant is designed to be effective with nothing more then the most basic magic items. To that end it relies heavily on feats to get the required elements. As you may guess the build is not as powerful as the on that can depend on picking up a few key items. However the build is perfectly viable and incorporates all the major elements of the primary build with out a single special magic item.

Questions, Thoughts, and Comment are Welcome

Awesome style man... You just made an uber multi marking engine of destruction!
Greetings from Koval, and like i have said before sick build.
The ability hinges on the feat Impending Doom style which marks anyone I deal damage to with Cleave. Reaping Cleave makes my Cleave attack deal damage to all adjecent enemies so all of them are marked.
Isn't there a limit on how many feats you can use to modify one At-Will? Sorta like domain feats for divine classes.

Yes, but Reaping Cleave is not a feat, it's a PP feature. So, it works.

I was referring to Longhand Student and Impending Doom Style actually.

Edit: nvm, the combo does not hinge upon longhand student, not only that but he mentioned it being an either/or.

A very clever combination indeed. Thumbs up for the build!

I am actually a little unclear on whether not I can use both as the rules is in MP 2 and talks only about lesser style feats. Impending Doom is not a lesser style feat so I don't see a reason you couldn't do both, but as you pointed it out it doesn't really matter. You would rarely use both at the same time as Impending Doom is about multiple targets and Longhand is about single targets.

Since I am unsure I am going with you can't do both hence why I put longhand as an option.

One thing I'd like to point out is that Pinning Challenge looses some of its value with the addition of HBO, you think maybe another feat would be more worthwhile in that case? I guess it depends how much you value immobilization on CC attacks.
Pinning Challenge is key to the builds tactics. The build is designed to be an isolationist defender by keeping targets close to him and preventing them from getting to his allies. To that end Pinning Challenge is key as it stuffs shifting away from me leaving no good means of escaping the builds grasp.

Glad to see it's finally up, obtuse.

For Pinning Challenge, it's probably the best thing he can take to increase stickiness. There really isn't much else that would provide as good of a way to keep enemies adjacent as it. I like it as a way to increase stickiness when all other aspects of the build have been generally covered, which they have.

Good work. I'll look over it and see what I can come up with.

This build screams Reaching Whirlwind
This build screams Reaching Whirlwind

Agreed. Even though it doesn't effect Cleave, it effects almost all of your other powers, and makes Cruel Reaper scary good.

@Alienfrombeyond

Thanks glad you like it.

@Critical Bastard and Grey_Warden

I heavily considered Reaching Whirlwind for the build, but in the end decided I wanted Marked Scrouge to up my CC attack or Single Target damage. I believe that to be more valuable to the overall tactics of the build then Reaching Whirlwind.

The Tactics section has been added which includes basic tactical info along with some more important tactical consideration and the builds daily nova.
More updates.

A level 30 CB summary has been add to the first post

Also the first variant has gone up and with all the talk on how the new item rules will change thing this version is item independent doing pretty much everything the orginal build does with out the need for items. Admittedly it takes some hits in certain areas but overall it is a viable and effective build even with out items.
In your level 30 Cleave breakdown, you have +27 to hit. Copy and Paste error, but I just thought I'd point it out.

Yep copy paste error has been fixed.

At the risk of 'necroing' a thread, wanted to say how much I like this build! I'm thinking of using him in the near future. I do have some changes I recommend, what do you think?

At level 2 you list a "magic amulet", and I'm pretty sure there's no such thing. I assume you're meaning the amulet of protection?

At level 4 I'd swap Weapon expertise: heavy blades with polearm expertise

At lvl 14 we don't need Paragon (or Robust) defenses, so I replaced it with improved defenses

At lvl 30 I swapped out epic will for epic fortitude...will is important but fortitude even more so for a frontline guy. At epic, over 43% of enemies can attack fortitude, while only about 28% can attack will. If I could take something that upped reflex that hadn't already been taken I would, as it's attacked even more than fortitude.

Feedback always welcome.
