This thread is for discussion of this week's Savor the Flavor, which goes live Wednesday on magicthegathering.com.

If only Maze didn't cost five to do what it does.  Brittle Effigy is vastly superior, and even that is pretty bad.
I'm glad to read about the Gargoyle Sentinel. I loved the flavour of this card when I first saw it. As far as its power goes, I think it should only have cost 1 or 2 to activate instead of 3. In it's current state, we get a 3/3 Defender for 3 mana (as opposed to a 3/3 defender for 1R in the RoE expansion) and 3 to make it flying instead of defender seem s bit much to pay every turn unless end game has been reached.

Another option that would have seemed interesting to me is the following:

Name: Gargoyle Sentinel
Casting Cost: 3
Type: Artifact
Rule text:

{0} Gargoyle Sentinel becomes a 3/3 creature with defender until end of turn
{1} Gargoyle Sentinel stop being a creature
{3} Gargoyle Sentinel becomes a 3/3 creature with flying until end of turn

This way, our gargoyle truly is inanimate and can cheat creature removal spells or WoG effects while it isn't activated. Then, you can decide to animate it at the last minute to provide defense (following the explanation you gave as to how a gargoyle might defend a castle it sits on). Finally it can also take off and fly to attack the enemy.
And the the funny part is that at any moment, for 1 mana, you can change your mind and make it an inanimate object once again by turning it into a statue.

Maybe another time!
You are Red/Blue!
Don't forget it follows Wakestone Gargoyle's template Smile

Uhm... for the Defender part.
I am suprised that Roc Egg wasnt mentioned. How does that block? (maybe it looks tasty and distracted the attacker, causing it to stop for a snack?)

Not bad. But what happens flavor wise when one kamahl kills the other one?
Zis iz a sign uf deep psychological troma, buried in zer subconscious mind. By keelink himzelf, Kamahl iz physically expressink hiz feelinks uf self-disgust ova hiz desire for hiz muzzer. [/GermanPsychologistVoice]

That makes no sense to me. If they spelled the ability out on the card in full then it would not be allowed in a mono-black Commander deck, but because they used a keyword to save space it is allowed? ~ Tim
Yup, just like you can have Birds of paradise in a mono green deck but not Noble Hierarch. YAY COLOR IDENTITY

I love this description. Like the cows are sponges filled with milk. I can see it all Nick Parks claymation-style with the cow's eyes bugging out momentarily as a giant farmer squeezes it like a squeaky dog toy, and milk shoots out of it.

I now have a new goal in life. ;)
This allows you to pump it with green magic if you want—but it's a nature elemental, so it disdains picking up a piece of Equipment.

Unless it's picking up a Behemoth Sledge, of course.

To hell with colored artifacts! Nature elementals of the world unite!

Don't you remember Sheldon? www.platypuscomix.net/otherpeople2/usacr...

(Yeah, I only remember him from Garfield and Friends too...)

If neither egg could block, they'd just be exceptionally terrible Johnny cards.
My gargoyles will get you, if you're on my ramparts. It's a little more work to get them to attack you on your turf.

I love the flavor of Hoarding Dragon!
