Intro Note


This particular build has 2 slightly different version based on a different racial selection. The first build which I believe to be the slightly more power use the Revenant Race to gain a starting better stat array. The second build found in the second post use the Tiefling Race and while it doesn't have the best stat array it is a very functional build which makes full effect of everything a Tiefling brings to the table.

Discussion:

The ability score breakdown will be important for the build. Strength receive most of the points (16 out of 22 each, for a 18 before racial modifiers) because most all of your attack rolls will involve Strength. Constitution takes the majority of the rest (3 of 22, for a 13 before racial modifiers) for some added toughness. Dexterity receives almost as much as Constitution (2 of 22, for a 12 before racial modifiers) for Initiative, Reflex, and Feat Qualification. Finally, Wisdom receives the last point (1 out of 22, for an 11 before racial modifiers) for a bit of extra will defense.

Early on the builds life you play like any other fighter and have most of the same tricks that you would expect for a Sword and Board fighter. You use the Khopesh as you primary weapon due to the racial feat support you have for the weapon, and the fact that it is both a Heavy Blade and Axe makes some option available that would not be otherwise. You pick up Shield Push here to make your Combat Challenge effective at stopping opponent attacks with a push.

Discussion:

At this level you gain Blade Opportunist to help make you more sticky by increasing the accuracy with your OA attacks. You also get Dwarven Armor to help the builds overall toughness, and the first neck slot item to help out your defenses. Finally you get increased maneuverability with the Pass Forward Utility allowing you to more easily position ourselves were you can be most effective.

Discussion:

At this level you gain the powerful Thurathi Weapon Training Feat that ups your damage by a substantial amount. On the stats side you invest in Strength and Constitution to advance your primary and secondary stat.

Discussion:

At this level, Rain of Steel gives you a way to punish enemies adjacent to us helping to get rid of them just that much faster. Meanwhile, the Iron Armbands of Power gives you a very welcome bonus to damage.

Discussion:

Here you add in Hellfire blood giving you +1 to hit and damage with fire attacks which thanks to your new Flaming Weapon is all your attacks. You also pick up a Khyber Shard of Fiery Depth for +1 untyped fire damage. You also gain the utility Daring Shout which gives you a encounter based multi-marking and some strong THP which fits wonderfully with this build, or any build for that matter.

Discussion:

At this point you get a boost to Strength to further increase your primary stat meanwhile you put a point into Wisdom to help solidify your will defense for future levels. Meanwhile you pick up Vigilant Justice Style allowing you to use your powerful Brash Strike At-Will on Combat Challenges Instead of a Melee Basic Attack. Finally you upgrade your Neck slot item from a generic Amulet of Protection to the much better Steadfast Amulet. You also upgrade your armor to +2 giving a welcome boost to AC.

Discussion:

Here you pick up Fighters Grit a utility that will help you to shrug off effects that would normally shut your defending ability down. Here you pick up your Weapon Expertise making you accuracy just that much higher. For items you pick up a Diamond Cincture for a bonus to fortitude, and another way to use a Healing Surge when needed.

Discussion:

Okay here your strategy and tactics change a bit as you gain access to Hellfire Retribution. This class feature makes your marks more deadly and allows you to punish people for disobeying your mark with out any action on your part by dealing fire damage based on Constitution to your marked enemies. When you add in Hell Fire of Mepholes cutting through fire resistance and giving out fire vulnerability it makes for a powerful combo. On top of that you gain Tail Trip which makes your Combat Challenges and Opportunity Attacks not only deal solid damage but also knock the target prone. Overall this is the level where the build really begins to take off and separate itself from you run of the mill fighter. For items you pick up an upgrade to your secondary weapon as well as the nice reprisal item Strikebacks.

Discussion:

At this level you pick up an answer to that side effect of Brash Strike in Ubiquitous shield allowing you to ignore the +2 to hit you keep granting your enemies with your combat challenge.  With items you upgrade your armor and pick up Boots of the Fencing Master which gives you a nice boost to defense and mobility.

Discussion:

At this level, you bump your main ability score in Strength and continue to push your secondary stat Constitution up to increase your durability, your Hellfire Reprisal damage, and your Brash Strike damage. Speaking of Brash Strike you get to now use it on Opputunity Attacks now as well as you combat challenge attack thanks to your Khopesh. Finally you get the Backlash Tattoo for some solid reprisal when the opponents Bloodies you. You also upgrade your primary weapon for more damage and accuracy.

At this level you pick up the Encouraging Shield helping to sure up you lower Will Defense. You also upgrade your Iron Armbands of Power and Khyber Shard of Fiery Death for a nice boost to damage. Finally you continue with the trend of increasing durability by pick up the Iron Warrior Utility.

Discussion:

Here you do not switch out a power as normal. Nothing on the list works as well as the highly accurate Sweeping Blow you currently have. You also get an upgrade to your armor for more AC and a bit more bonus to Endurance. Finally you upgrade your secondary weapon for better ranged attacks. Also at this level you pick up the Burning Opportunism class feature greatly enhancing your Combat Challenge and Opportunity Attack.

Okay so you are finally at the epic tier here you get a big boost to Strength from your Epic Destiny. Meanwhile your passive mark punishment gets a nice boost in the form of Hell’s Burning mark which now has your mark handing out fire vulnerability 5 like candy. You defense gets a boost with switching out Paragon Defense with Robust defense for another +1 to Fortitude, Reflex, and Will. Finally you get some nice upgrades to your items. You start by increasing the tier of you Diamond Cincture. You also add on the Foe Binder ring making the -2 to hit from your marks work even when you enemy uses an Area attack that includes you as a target, and once per day upping the mark penalty to -3 for an encounter or more.

The idea here is to use the Tiefling Warfiend and Tiefling racial support to punish your enemies for daring to attack you allies or yourself. On top of that to make sure that you can stand there and take what ever damage comes your way. To that end you use some of the awesome racial support Tiefling’s have to burn you enemies alive. Now since Tiefling’s Racial stat adjustments don’t match up with what a fighter needs you use the Revenant race to get the racial support with a more favorable stat array.


When it comes to mark punishment you can’t get much better with highly accurate attacks that deal massive amounts of damage, and debuff the enemy with the prone status. This punishment extends to your Opportunity Attacks as well which do nearly as much damage and are drastically more accurate, stop movement, and knock prone. Escaping your wrath is not an easy task for any enemy that cannot teleport, and even then thanks to your passive punishment in Hell’s Retribution they will still feel some of your sting no matter how far they run.

Meanwhile your strong focus on Constitution has made you very tough to take down, and while your defense are not excellent thay are very strong. Overall you are able to take the beating that is coming you way and thanks to your powerful attack you won't have to take it for long.

Discussion:

The ability score breakdown will be important for the build. Strength receive most of the points (16 out of 22 each, for a 18 before racial modifiers) because most all of your attack rolls will involve Strength. Constitution takes the majority of the rest (3 of 22, for a 13 before racial modifiers) for some added toughness. Dexterity receives as much as Constitution (3 of 22, for a 13 before racial modifiers) for Initiative, Reflex, and Feat Qualification.

Early on the builds life you play like any other fighter and have most of the same tricks that you would expect for a Sword and Board fighter. You use the Khopesh as you primary weapon due to the racial feat support you have for the weapon, and the fact that it is both a Heavy Blade and Axe makes some option available that would not be otherwise. You pick up Shield Push here to make your Combat Challenge effective at stopping opponent attacks with a push.

Here you pick up Fighters Grit a utility that will help you to shrug off effects that would normally shut your defending ability down. Discussion:

Okay here your strategy and tactics change a bit as you gain access to Hellfire Retribution. This class feature makes your marks more deadly and allows you to punish people for disobeying your mark with out any action on your part by dealing fire damage based on Constitution to your marked enemies. When you add in Hell Fire of Mepholes cutting through fire resistance and giving out fire vulnerability it makes for a powerful combo. On top of that you gain Tail Trip which makes your Combat Challenges and Opportunity Attacks not only deal solid damage but also knock the target prone. Overall this is the level where the build really begins to take off and separate itself from you run of the mill fighter. For items you pick up an upgrade to your secondary weapon as well as the nice reprisal item Strikebacks.

Okay so you are finally at the epic tier here you get a big boost to Strength from your Epic Destiny. Meanwhile your passive mark punishment gets a nice boost in the form of Hell’s Burning mark which now has your mark handing out fire vulnerability 5 like candy. You defense gets a boost with switching out Paragon Defense with Robust defense for another +1 to Fortitude, Reflex, and Will. Finally you get some nice upgrades to your items. You start by increasing the tier of you Diamond Cincture. Well here you are level 30. Enjoy watching you enemies burn as the fall before you.


Build Goal and Tactics


The idea here is to use the Tiefling Warfiend and Tiefling racial support to punish your enemies for daring to attack you allies or yourself. This build employs the dual nature of its primary weapon the Khopesh allowing it to replaces it MBAs on OA attacks, and CC attacks with the more powerful Brash Strike. This combined with the punishment features of the Warfiend PP makes the builds OA and CC attacks something to be feared easily.


On the other side of the equation the build gets nice mileage out of Infernal Wrath to punish any enemy who would dare attack it. This combines with the other punishment base items it has to make this build able to respond to being attacked multiple times through out a given encounter with out much effort. Meanwhile the builds powerful fire based attacks easily cut down any enemies left standing. Overall this build compares well with the Revenant version losing only a little bit of accuracy in OA attacks, and a bit of base DPR for the ability to not only punish those who attack you allies but to also punish those who would dare to attack you.

A big part of a Fighter's effectiveness is how powerful their mark punishment is, so we will be looking at this build's Combat Challenge and opportunity attacks to determine how powerful the disincentive for disobeying the Fighter is. With this build we also incorporates some passive mark effects with Hellfire Retribution and Hell’s Burning Mark which effects it’s ability to control the battlefield and stack with its standard Combat Challenge attacks


Combat Challenge Attacks: Revenant Version

Level 1

Melee Basic Attack: +7 vs. AC
Hit: 1d8+4 damage the target, and the target is pushed 1 square

Fun build...I have been thinking about a good way to make a fighter tiefling build work as well.  I will look over in more detail when I have more time...but one thing I found with a melee build is that Turathi Weapon training is not as effective as I hoped due to the weapon selection.

The -1 to attack with the kopesh may not be worth the damage gain of +1 over weapon focus for a longsword.  Also since you need to use a flaming weapon, you cannot take advantage of some of the axe weapons (like rending)

Just using simple math:
Longsword with Weapon Focus- 65% to hit with 40 Damage potential=26 DPR
Kopesh with Turathi Weapon Training - 60% with 41 Damage Potential=24.6

Would Revenant Tiefling work? It seems like Int is your dump stat so it looks like +2 Con would be pretty useful. I am not sure how valuable you find Infernal Wrath and Bloodhunt though...
I think this build is pritty spiffy.

Some thing to note.

Hellfire doesn't work that way any more it was errattaed back in july(not sure if this is correct) to no longer give vulnerability it just cuts through fire resistance.
It looks like Hell's Burning Mark is applying the Fire vulnerability, not Hellfire of Mephostles.

O didn't see that i only looked at his 11th level snap shot which mentions the quote i had. Though i agree at 21st level he can get fire vuln that way.

Yes I could use a long sword to potentially generate more DPR but I do actually use the dual Heavyblade and Axe feature of the Khopesh in the build to great effect. Picking up Blade Oppurtunist to fix my OA attacks and Brash Strike to make great single target damage and a couple other things that I play off of that help the build out. Also do your DPR calculations take the brutal 1 property into acount?

Yes a Revenant Tiefling would work and possibly be better overall. I went with the actual race as I just generally don't like the flavor of the Revenant for most campaigns and I would also lose on out my Racial Power Paladin's Wrath which is just is awesome

You are correct I caught the errata later in the build process and forgot to update it is still a very useful feat for the build helping to make sure it fire centric damage doesn't get stuffed by resistence.

Yep Hell's Burning mark give the enemies fire vulnerability for the build to exploit.

I definatly looked at Secrets of Belial, but didn't feel the need to switch up the builds utilities. While the build definatly has some striker leanings it is a Primary Defender first and foremost. Also from a DPR perspective I like Martial Supremacy for its ability to drasticly effect my accuracy each and ever combat.
Okay after some thought and play with the numbers the Race has been changed to Revenant (Tiefling). The stat adjustment opens up some really interesting option when combined with the Khopesh for some really accurate and powerful CC and OA attacks.

The orginal build has been moved to the Variant section, and is still highly effective.
Nice builds. But the revenant needs the Vigor feats at paragon and epic to capitalize in being undying; the revenant handbook has a good discussion of it.
What feat would you suggest dropping for it? Right now the feats are pretty tight having to pick up the standard fighter array of feats, and all the racial specific and fire related feats.
The Tiefling build has been updated and its Combat Challenge, and OA info has been added to the third post. Overall I think both builds work suprisingly well, but would love to get some feedback.
I've made a similar build, but I instead used a Chaladin multiclassed into fighter to gain access to the Tiefling Warfiend. At level 11 its mark does 17 damage (11 radiant and 6 fire), making it a desirable target. The drawback to the Chaladin method is that you lose out on awesomeness of a fighter's marks and punishments. I guess it just depends on personal preference and what the party needs.
Actually that is funny. My first thought when I saw the PP was a Chaladin MCed into fighter. I am actually still tinkering with a build that use a Chaladin frame into Warfiend. Though currently I am looking at doing some sort of Hybrid Paladin as Warfiend is nice there to fix the builds Divine Challange Damage, and it opens up some interesting options. Right now I am looking at something like Paladin|Warlock / Warfiend / Chosen focusing entirely on Chr and Con.

I really want to see if there is anything that can be done to improve the build, but if no one has any suggest I will assume that it is optimal as is.

i've been toying around in my head with the idea of a Revenant(tiefling) Battlemind|Fighter hybrid that goes Tiefling Warfiend|Invincible Mind.  i've had trouble with MAD issues so i've been trying to consider it as a Battlemind with MC Fighter.  haven't really taken the time to flesh it out though.
I haven't started playing with Battleminds yet so not sure what they bring to the table though from what I understand with that Hybrid you may have some MAD issues that while not impossible to overcome can be difficult. I think it would most likely be better to Multiclass into Fighter for Warfiend the downside to that is that you only really get benefit from the PP's utility, and 11th level features.

Though those features are nice for any Tiefling Defender the big draw at least for me was the level 16 feature that combines so nicely with the level 11 feature, and single handedly makes you OA and CC attacks dangerous.
I haven't given up on this build I am working on some weapon variants, and have found a new pic for the build.
Sick build man!  Your right our builds wounld be nasty together.  Not sure I'm gonna bother now using my concept with Hell's Burning Mark... you pulled it off pretty damn nicely.
Thanks MC DrowBane glad you like it. Once I get done with the Headsman I will see about doing some sort of interesting Fire Themed Striker. Then all that would need to be done is a fire themed leader of some sort to really have fun with fire.

Sadly, the Tiefling version of your build has errors in attribute point distribution and advancement, making certain feats unavailable (namely Blade Opportunist, Heavy Blade Opportunity and Scale Armor Specialization, though they become available later than when you've taken them).

It seems you confused the attributes of your two builds at some point. Are you still working on this or did you simply make an error?

As far as I've worked the build, you have no Wis Pre-Req feats, so by adjusting to the following starting array the feats all work (though opportunity attack accuracy suffers from adjusted Wis):

Str: 18@1st to 28@30th (Ok)

BTW: Love the build. It seems that Tail Trip feat is nasty (making you extra sticky), and I wasn't even aware of it as Tiefling is not an optimal fighter Race. A shame a stronger Catch 22 isn't available, but I'm looking into that and making use of the Revenant Vitality...

The errors where just an editing mistake on my part the stat progression was supposed to be just as you suggested, but I had just copied and pasted the format from the Revenent Version when doing the Tiefling Version and failed to edit properly. They should now be fixed

Yeah I wish there was a more powerful Catch-22 as well but thanks to your ability to hand out Fire Vunerablity like candy with your marks and your fire damage you should generate solid DPR against those who are unfortant enough to be hit by you.
One quick note that you may or may not have noticed: Hell's Burning Mark only applies the vulnerability for your attacks, so your allies don't benefit from it.
