Vitaly Chernobyl - The Nuclear Bard
Purpose: This is a nova build for bards. Really, it is more of a fun build than anything else, but it should be able to burst some pretty large numbers in one round. Pre-errata, I'd been playing something similar to this, a Rogue/Warlock/Assassin/Raven Herald. Then Windrise Ports got nerfed, and the Compendium folks realized that the Slaying Action feature of Raven Herald and Death Dealer had the same name, and were giving both abilities out... so they fixed that. The redesign necessitated a lot of rethinking, and while this isn't the build I'll eventually be playing, it is capable of rolling lots and lots of dice on a single attack.
Which is fun, right? And we're not even going to use any daily powers.
Key Concept: Death Dealer adds +2 damage per die that we roll. Not +2 to damage rolls. Per die. This means we want lots and lots of dice being pitched out, in order to maximize this number.
Build: Dragonborn Bard/Rogue/Warlock/Assassin/Ranger/Death Dealer, 11th level
Str 13, Con 14, Dex 18, Int 9, Wis 11, Cha 22
Feats: All the above Multiclass feats, as well as Spiked Chain Training (giving us a 2d4 light blade that we can sneak attack with), Killer's Insight (+1 extra shroud), and Venom Hand Assassin (+2d8 to our first attack).
Items: Challenge Seeking Spiked Chain (+2d6 damage to undamaged target), Iron Armbands (Heroic)
Prep Round: Shroud, Curse, Spot Weakness (+4 to damage on next hit)
Nova Round: We Shroud and Quarry the target, and action point to attack (with any 2W bardic attack) and then attack again (with any other 2W attack). Breathe on them. Drop the spiked chain and Fast Hands a longbow into hand. Finish with a Rhyme of the Blood Seeking Blade during one of our ally's turns.
On our first hit, we will do 4d4+9 (base damage) + 2d6 (Quarry) + 2d6 (Curse) + 3d6 (Sneak Attack) + 2d6 (Challenge Seeking Weapon) + 2d8 (Venom Hand Assassin) + 3d6+9 (Shrouds) + 4 (Spot Weakness) + 2 (Iron Armbands) + 36 (Death Dealer) = 4d4+12d6+2d8+60 damage on a single hit, or 128 damage.
We'll finish with about 4d4+19 on the second hit, 2d6+8 with the breath attack (in a blast 3) and 1d10+11 on the Rhyme, for a total nova round of 188.5 damage. For not using any daily powers, this is not too shabby for an 11th level leader - that'll kill an elite if all the attacks hit.
DPR Analysis: Assuming a target AC of 25 and a target Ref of 23 with a to-hit of +19 (+18 when not APing). Crits: 0.05 * (246+3d6) = 12.9DPR. Normal attacks: 0.65 * 188.5 = 122.5DPR. +1.65DPR adjustment for accuracy on the Rhyme and +0.05 * 128 for Chessentia background. Total DPR: 144DPR for the nova round.
I haven't spent a whole lot of time digging for extra sources of dice, and all this will get amped up even further in epic, when all those sources gain an extra die of damage. Also, the nova round will continue getting better via even more feats such as Predatory Action to deal Quarry damage twice in the round.
The character is actually quite playable from level 1 onward; with all those MC feats he has a huge number of skills trained. Outside of combat he'll be very effective. In combat, after blowing his nova attack, he will still be a fully functional leader. Using a spiked chain lets the bard attack from behind the party fighter, which makes him a lot more survivable than other melee bards.
