This thread is for discussion of this week's From the Lab, which goes live Thursday morning on magicthegathering.com.
Where's Noels prediction for the World Cup winner, eh?
I only read to the end to see the prediction, and even that was missing.  This article missed like the Italians in '94.
viva espana!
I was thinking for Team Alara that Rhox Charger should have been the Center Mid and Thronling should have been the striker, the Exalted on the Charger is like having a man who can feed a good cross, where the Thornling can be gigantic and have trample to finish it in.
Weirdest/worst article ever? Shoulda at least gone out on a limb with a prediction
I hate soccer. Especially now that the Dutch team is in the finals. This whole country seems to have gone crazy. Bah.
I don't really get this article.  I understand that he was trying to make soccer teams out of Magic cards, but I fail to recognize how the creatures he selected have any relation to the game.  Since they aren't interesting decks or deck fragments either, what was the point?  If I were a bigger soccer fan, would this somehow make sense?
Thanks to everyone who helped with the design of the plane of Golamo in the Great Designer Search 2!

CraziER, you mean? :P

I missed the prediction as well, but its hard to give my own my brain says Spain my hart the Netherlands (I'm Dutch so that last bit is kind of obvious) Normally I always try to go with the rational approach instead of the emotional but hey, I thought Brazil would beat our team so I just hope my brain is wrong again.

As far as the article goes I believe it's mostly word games most of his keepers have keeper in their cardname, the backs tend to have defender, and the strikers, haste, double or first strike, other then that his teams have a few synergistic cards but that’s about it I believe.

So could we come up with a format to mix magic and soccer? here are a few suggestions:

A soccer team that plays at the world cup has 23 players 3 of which are goalkeepers and you can only have 11 players in the field 1 of which is a keeper, a match lasts 90 minutes if the game is not decided by then you first play an additional 30 minutes after which penalties have to decide who wins.  so how about:

-your deck has to have 23 creatures
-3 of these have to be the same legendary creature and no other legendary creatures are allowed (legendary rule representing the 1 goalkeeper a time), alternatively: 3 different legendary creatures and the legendary rule is altered to: a legendary creature is exiled from the game if you gain control of another legendary creature.
- you can only play one copy of each non-legendary creature (each player is an individual)
-you can only have a maximum of 10 creatures on the battlefield plus 1 copy of the/a legendary creature (depending on which alternative you choose from the above
- no tokens or planeswalkers allowed, alternatively: 1 planeswalker is allowed representing the coach
-the game lasts 90 minutes the person who has dealt the most damage to his opponent (scored the most goals) wins the game, in case of a draw both players shuffle their creatures into a "creature pile" the top card of each pile is then revealed and the creature with the highest cmc scores a penalty; in case of an equal cmc no penalty is scored.
(I don't think an additional 30 minutes before penalties would be fun but if you feel different: go ahead and add 30 minutes. Also if you feel like really playing soccer-magic you could switch seats after 45 minutes )
- if you run out of cards before the 90 minutes are up you may shuffle your graveyard into your library, if you need to do this more than 3 times you automatically lose the game (representing the maximum of 3 substitutes)
- if there are more then 2 players you play a competition not a multiplayer game.
-Archenemy cards could be used to represent referee decisions.

These are just some suggestions so any comments/additions are more then welcome.

For Lorwyn and Shadowmoor, I'm going to do two teams, one for each side of the schizophrenic plane.

Lorwyn and Shadowmoor are not schizophrenic. A person who has a diagnosis of schizophrenia does not have any symptoms that the change from Lorwyn to Shadowmoor has. Using the term "schizophrenic plane" only adds to the public's delusions of people who have mental disorders.

The term schizophrenic alone is bad. It goes against using people first terminology. The use of a mental disorder first is labeling and dismissive of a person who has that disorder. There are many things wrong with Noel deCordova's use of the term schizophrenic plane.

Lorwyn-Shadowmooras a plane does not even have bi-polar disorder, which would appear much more likely with manic states (Lorwyn) and depressive states (Shadowmoor). But even that mental disorder should not be used to describe that plane.

Face it, you're pretty much here as a meat shield.

If you are at Georgian Court Univeristy or Monmouth Univeristy PM me. If you are out by York College of PA, I can help you reach the group there.

Seriously!

If I wanted to read about soccer I would go to a website about soccer!

Your article basically says: "I think M11 is amazing because I'm paid to say that and to prove just how johnnytastic it is I'm going to briefly mention some of its more synergistic elements then talk about soccer. Oh and I'm also not making decks this week because I just LOVE soccer!"

Why didn't you just write that, link to a website about soccer and save time.  Wizards needs a better Johnny columnist.  Some like hm.. I don't know MaGo.  Some one who can actually write.

Oh, come on, don't overreact.

As for the article, it's the first From the Lab that I truly hate. The fact that it was a very short article, talking about soccer (a sport that I hate) and with no decklists or combos, just made it very disappointing. Oh well, you can't get it right all the time, it seems...

OMG click HERE! OMG! How to autocard and use decklist format
--->
For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

I like storm crow because I really like crows in real life, as an animal, and the card isn't terribly stupid, but packs a good deal of nostalgia and also a chunck of the game's history. So it's perhaps one of the cards I have most affection to, but not because "lol storm crow is bad hurr hurr durr".

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

Just to counter the haters here:

I was rather amused by the article. Except that the prediction about the Netherlands winning is missing, of course ;). Football appears to be the most popular sport in the world so it's not that surprising that at least someone on this international website mentions it. Do you hear the rest of the world cry when either baseball or american football is mentioned/referenced for the gazillioned time?

I do agree (with someone before me, I think) that it would have been more magic related if it was used to make theme decks rather than abusing the name/mechanic of cards as player positions.
