This thread is for discussion of this week's The Week That Was, which goes live Friday morning on magicthegathering.com.

I quit shortly after Torment came out, but it wasn't this guy's fault. I always thought it was kind of cool to have an efficient Frozen Shade, for all the times I tried to make that card work before finally giving up.

Thankfully this time we have Nirkana Revenant to help. This Shade will be fairly decent I should think.

Actually come to think of it, I'm surprised he doesnt mention Nirkana in his article when he was making the Variant... o.0

Isn't it funny how Nantuko Husk was cut from M10 because of flavor reasons, yet it's okay for them to put Nantuko Shade in M11?

"As familiar evocative creatures like Ironroot Treefolk and Black Knight were replaced with mechanics-first cards like Kavu Climber and Nantuko Husk bearing names and concepts meaningless to anyone not already involved in the property, the core set lost some of its ability to speak to newer players."  --  Quote from "Recapturing the Magic with Magic 2010" Aaron Forsythe - Monday, February 23, 2009.

So funny. I just posted this on our local boards:

Although I love them for reprinting this card. I just think wizards doesn't always keep to the reasons they do stuff.
For instance let me quote a small part of article about nantuko husk (which was replaced by vampire aristocrat):

As familiar evocative creatures like Ironroot Treefolk and Black Knight were replaced with mechanics-first cards like Kavu Climber and Nantuko Husk bearing names and concepts meaningless to anyone not already involved in the property, the core set lost some of its ability to speak to newer players. Yes, over time the core set became a collection of the simplest elegant executions of each facet of the color pie, but at that point who was supposed to be interested?f

The reason you are not interesting new players is not because they didn't know what a nantuko was, it's because you kinda forgot that zombies decks were loved by many new players. Currently there is only 38 Zombies in the standard format and most of the playable ones are different dual colors, making them played together a bit difficult. Rather tell us that vampires were cooler for that format and thats the reason.
There comes a point in every set where you find that first rare you just *know* you're going to pull and be unimpressed.

This is that card for me.
Looking over this version of black control for standard once M11 comes out, wouldn't Haunting Echoes drop off as soon as M11 goes in? Brian said it goes out with Scars so either my understanding of the how sets cycle in/out is wrong or it was a typo. And if it was a typo any recommendations for replacement of Haunting Echoes? I really like this card and want them to keep it around!

M11 comes out before scars so there will be a brief period where M10 and M11 are both legal in standard. M10 goes out with scars just as he said.

Right now there is really nothing that serves the same function as haunting echoes in standard. If you're looking for discard you still have mind rot or if you're looking for graveyard hate there is relic of progenitus but I guess it rotates at the same time as haunting echoes so that doesn't help much. I think there are a few others out there they just aren't coming to mind. For decking you have tome scour, hedron crab and a few other options. Maybe sadistic sacrament although I don't really think haunting echoes is that great nor do I think it needs a similar card to replace it you could just do what I do and ignore it's existence.
Don't be too smart to have fun

This is exactly what I was thinking when I saw the preview card.  It overshadowed anything else that was written in the article for anyone who remembered Forsythe's rationalization of the functional reprint of Nantuko Husk/Phyrexian Ghoul.  I thought to myself, "A nantuko in the core set?  Wasn't there something about identifiable content in core sets?"

As for the common vs. rare argument, I would like to introduce you to: Llanowar Elves.

Let's just face it.  Magic's primary intent on the proliferation of vamps in M10 was b/c of the surge of interest vampires received from IP like Twilight and True Blood.  The whole rationalization for excluding Nantuko Husk was both unnecessary and unbelievable.
Functional reprints have always been of marginal cards (ones which, at most, see a little Standard and Block play, and no play in older formats).  Nantuko Shade is played in Legacy which is probably why they were hesitant to rename it.

top decking into 6 or 8 shades would be pretty cool. I already do that with Knight Of Stromgald and Order Of The Ebon Hand either as a 2/2 or 3/3 split because of Runed Halo which I've had some laughs about.. I've gotten a pump knight halo'd only to play the exact same functionally identical card with a different name...

If a card is really good, and it's got a silly name to it like Nantuko or Fyndhorn etc.. if anything it belongs in a core set as a reprint. Not some expansion set where it really wouldn't fit. Like, Nantuko Shade would probably have been really odd in Zendikar or something.

As fun as 6 or 8 shades is, it's redudant.

I believe that this is A Good Thing. Hopefully now I can pick a playset of these guys a little easier... (Currently I'm running 4 Orders and 4 Knights in my mono-black aggro deck)

Might I just interject that making this a meme is the worst idea in magic in my opinion. It is too overpowered. It encourages cheating it in play. Essentially 99/100 times it is cheated in play instead of hardcast. Not only that, but you essentially win when it comes into play.

Make five-color hybrid tribal instant with buyback, kicker, cycling, card draw, token production, a steal effect, alternate casting cost and landfall that embodies the love that your mom and I share.
I think you just killed all chances of my card being elegant. Ardency :1mana::symwu::symbr: Tribal Instant - Soldier You may have target opponent gain control of 3 permanents you control rather than pay ~'s mana cost. As an additional cost to cast ~, choose two creatures you control, and sacrifice the rest. If you control a soldier, you can't sacrifice permanents this turn. Landfall - If you had a land enter the battlefield under your control this turn, instead choose 4 creatures. Kicker You get an emblem with "As long as you control both chosen creatures, they have protection from everything." If ~ was kicked, creatures you control get +1/+1 for each creature card in your graveyard until end of turn. Cycling :2mana: When you cycle ~, put two 2/2 Soldier creatures onto the battlefield. Would this EVER fit on a card?~
Aside from a few wording mishaps (should say "each chosen creature" because it's not necessarily two) this is nice. Very simple and elegant. I like the alternate cost a lot, and the kicker goes nicely with the sacrifice. However, the cycling seems a bit powerful (4 power and a card for 3? Cycling is supposed be bad. 8/10 EDIT: Just looked up "ardency". Lol.

I don't think a world that sacrifices so much would want to stop the making of children .
Vivisect =/= vasectomy
Now I just feel silly.

they're good cards but Nantuko Shade does double duty over the pump knights. for protection from white you're better off with playing Ihsan's Shade, or Malakir Bloodwitch.

there is also Grotesque Hybrid which is quite good too.
