This thread is for discussion of magicthegathering.com's Magic Arcana, Card of the Day, and Daily Decks features for the month of July, 2010.
Ooh, let me guess! Does it rhyme with Majani Moldmane?
Woah, that looks like one powerful avatar token. Power and toughness each equal to your life total? I've gotta get whatever produces such a token.
Raymond Swanland wins again.

I may have to order some of those ooze tokens and mitotic slimes just because they look so cool.
Mitotic Slime: new addition for the Phyrexian Altar+Fecundity+Sprouting Thrinax/Mogg War Marshal/Tukatongue Thallid deck.  Now there are four creatures that produce more creatures than their casting cost (and that cost more than zero).
Thanks to everyone who helped with the design of the plane of Golamo in the Great Designer Search 2!

there is nothing "epic" about a turn one victory. ever. or really any magic game, for that matter.
So this one time, I wanted to play a game of Magic with my friend, but he was in another country and neither of us had Magic Online. I hitchhiked my way to the coast, barely fending off hungry wildlife when I couldn't get a ride, nearly dying of thirst crossing deserts, and posoning myself half to death foraging for food. At one point, I was taken hostage by a group of kidnappers, only managing to escape after a week of careful planning thanks to careful application of a rusty spoon. Once I reached the coast, I had no money to buy a ticket across the ocean, so I built a boat using my own two hands, and spent months sailing across the waves, nearly losing my deck as I swam to the shore of a desert island in a storm after being capsized by an enormous wave. Nearly delusional after so long with no human contact (the notches I cut in the single tree to tell time had long since felled the thing) I was eventually rescued by a passing ship, where I was taken aboard as a crew member. We sailed around the world, seeing many exotic places and having great adventures, before we finally arrived at my friend's country. Once more I stumbled across a desolate landscape, riding on train or car when I could, and going on foot when I could not. Eventually, weary to the bone, seven years after I started my journey, I arrived at my friend's house, clutching my well-worn and weathered deck to my chest. We shuffled up our decks, I won the roll. Gleefully, I laid down my cards. Black Lotus. My friend looked quizzically at me, wondering what I was about to do. After so long, he no longer knew what deck I had brought with me to this game. Flash. A knowing smile appears on my friend's face as the knowledge slowly returns to him. Protean Hulk. My friend extends his hand, knowing the game is over before it even started. And finally, after so many trials, the sweet taste of victory is mine.

Drive sales of what? Non-Jace, non-Mystic cards? I'm pretty sure people already own more than eight Magic cards. If you don't, I feel for you. Maybe you can trade those Stoneforge Mystics, which are still quite valuable, for some.
So, to view today's videos I have to get a special request? Do I fill that out in triplicate? Frown

yeah what gives. you also have to sign over your soul to WotC
We're having some problems getting the videos live. Hope to have them up shortly...thanks for your patience.
These primer video's are great. I especially like the one on protection, since it covers it very completely, including odd corner cases like with auras simply coming into play. Great for new players
The Magic Invitational was an invite-only tournament that featured the game's very best players playing wacky formats. Why? Because winning meant taking home the title of champion and earning the right to have your likeness festooned onto a real Magic card you designed!

Does this mean that the Invitational is gone forever?

If so, that makes me sad.
In the first video they said that the Planeswalkers each have a cycle of cards, one common and one uncommon, and that one will always be a creature, what is Jace's creature? I can't see one on the visual spoiler
o.0 A movie, that is a surprise. I wonder what it will be like, IE - Animation etc. Very interesting. I hope this is decent, and that one day they visit The Thran/Urza era. Cant wait!

Once again, contest is for US only, I am dissapoint.

Are we allowed to submit more than one deck?  Maybe I'm blind, but I'm not seeing a restriction on number of entries.  Which would be good, I have a lot of ideas brewing for this already.
One of these days, we'll get a competition that is open to the planet.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is not a Magic movie. It's a live-action Disney movie loosely based on the Fantasia short of the same name. The movie will star Nicolas Cage, Jay Baruchel and Alfred Molina. It has nothing to do with MtG storyline elements and will only briefly feature characters playing the card game as it appears in real life.

I work at a movie theater. I've been keeping track of this film since I first heard about it. You can expect to see ads for it in boosters of M11.

what this is SO stupid, magic is global and yet you can only win the contest if your in the U.S. The least they could go and do is let Canada in on the fun. what the hell WotC, this sucks.
May the deck be focused around one planeswalker, but be more than one color.  like say if i wanted to build a jace deck, could i make it blue/black?
They're never going to do a competition that's open to non-US residents, simply because awarding prizes outside of the country is more trouble than it's worth. There are lots of taxes, legal restrictions, etc.

And I'm not quite sure what exactly I'm supposed to build for this thing...but I guess I'll give it a try.

By the way, you can only submit one deck, according to the rules that you have to say you read.

I am skeptical about the judging for this contest. With as many entries as they are sure to get how will they decide between a decklist that has 23 lands or another with 24. Will they even choose the "right" one?

What are the odds that this movie is actually going to present Magic in a positive light?

Here's what I'm envisioning:

Voiceover:  I used to be a loser.  See, here's me back then, playing Magic:  the Gathering with some friends.

[Cut to a scene featuring stereotypical geeks playing D&D while also holding Magic cards.  One of them might say something embarrassing like, "I wrap my level 25 Unicorn of the Fairy Realm in a Cloak of Rainbow's Blessing."  To which a second character might respond, "Ach, I am vanquished by your fearsome horned steed!"

The hero, meanwhile, will be staring off into space, clearly not enjoying himself.  Perhaps he is looking at a poster with anime girls on it.  He turns to his friends and says, "Did you ever feel like there might be something more to life?"  His friends stare at him a while, before one of them rolls a fistful of irregular dice and examines them before replying to his question in a straightforward, matter-of-fact way.

Why do I expect this?  Because this is how we are always portrayed in pop culture.  Magic and D&D are used as a symbol of unlikable geekiness or as a quick way of establishing the "zero-to-hero" trope.  The two are interchangeable in most people's minds, and Hollywood (which doesn't care about accuracy) likes to portray Magic as being a lot more like D&D since that game has the potential for more embarrassing interactions.
"We will all be purified in Wurm. What is good will be used to heal Wurm, or grow Wurm, or to fuel Wurm's path. What is vile will be extruded, and we will be free of it forever." --Prophet of the Cult of Wurm

^THAT.

And I thnik it would be way cooler if a movie, involving Magic, would be based on one of the books. Animated Ajani/Jace/Liliana/Chandra/Garruk? Yes please! I'd LOVE to see a Wrath of God in action. Or have people walk through the streets of Ravnica, and then see Razia fly above. ANYTHING.

For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

I'm a bit more optimistic than that. Since this appears to be some sort of minor cross-promotion with Wizards, it's unlikely to be wildly inaccurate, and probably won't be excessively negative either. What I'm really expecting is something that wouldn't even be noticeable if we weren't all looking for it now (though less so than in the Spider-Man movie, and I could be wrong).

As for the contest, my best guess is that it's supposed to be mechanically and creatively themed around the planeswalker. This probably means using the three cards that contain the planeswalker's name and other cards that support that general strategy (i.e., milling for Jace, burn for Chandra). How on earth we're supposed to build a creative and original deck around such a theme using just the core set is beyond me.
Oh believe me, it's possible.  I've got several ideas on how to use the walker's abilities in weird comboriffic ways, my big problem is picking just one to submit.
I have a few ideas but from the details they have published its hard to tell exactly what they are looking for.  Uniqueness and creativity are kind of subjective terms.  What about important criteria like consistency, mana curve, SB construction, etc.
I have a number of great ideas, and would very much like to be at least eligible for the compition, but unfortunately I can't due to being a Canadian. Thanks, Wizards. :[

Wouldn't those things fall under the third category, "Relevance"?  The way I'm reading it, I think they care more about what the deck does and how it goes about doing it rather then how tournament-worthy it may or may not be.  Basically, think like a Johnny.

And the sideboard is optional, so I doubt that's going to factor in heavily if at all unless you do something really cool with it.
May the deck be focused around one planeswalker, but be more than one color.  like say if i wanted to build a jace deck, could i make it blue/black?

I have the same question. For instance, there's tons of lifegain in this set, so could it all contribute thematically to Ajani? Or do I have to stay in white?
Do my eyes deceive me, or do a couple of these intro packs actually contain a THIRD COPY of certain cards? I thought that was now prohibited by U.S. law, considering how long it's been since they did it.

Three Bolts!
I'd never thought I see the day when I'd be happy to drown in piles of a common, but it's actually happened.  Bolt is one of those few stellar commons where offering someone a dozen is usually a decent trade.
Protean Hydra is a rare, now? Wow, I'm glad I didn't buy any of those! Imagine paying mythic prices, then having wizards drop the rarity to something more affordable! I might wait until M12 when they release it as an uncommon...
I'm also wondering if it has to be mono color or not. Also, how do we submit the signed waiver through e-mail? Do I have to print out the waiver, sign it, scan it, and attach it to the e-mail?
I've long since given up on them putting one of the dual lands in the precons to help out the budget players, but now we don't even get a Terramorphic Expanse?

Still, great to see these back to 60, I'll definitely make it a point to grab one or two.
