Supplemental ships for SSB?

Hi everyone

I just started collecting SSB as i would like to try and work them into a project i'm working on. It's kind of a 'galactic conquest' campaign thing where you will fight for control of the galaxy one planet at a time, having to fight for orbital control before you can land your troops and battle for the planet with SWM miniatures.

My problem is, i think there's not enough ships to fill my needs. So i thought that you guys might have some good ideas as to where i can get some ships that's about the same scale as SSB's. I'm especially interested in any ships (all classes) that could be used for the fringe. Also, a republic carrier, v-19 torrent, and separatist landing craft is a high priority. But any ideas are welcome.

Also another question. I've experienced that people tend to thing the original rules suck. What are the best alternative rules according to you?
Check through the forums a few pages in.  Many people (Including myself) Have built additional ships or found models to use elsewhere..

Look for custom threads by:

Rogue Knight
Guardian_A

and many others.  (Can't remember more names off the top fo my head)

Also look for the Rogue Fleet thread for a list of ships with instructions on how to build them.  If you can't find the instructions, let me know.  I Have them, and the V-19 is one of the ones I made instructions for.

Not sure what ship you mean by "Republic Carrier"

And for the Sep Landing craft, there is a AMT ERTL snapfast model that works well.  I am not sure of their availability any more, but they are usually $5.00 or less.

I have four of them and the work great.

Also, if you go to starshipmodeler.com, one company called Odyssey Slipways has models that work well for the SSB scale, namely the Dreadnaughts, Assault Frigates, and MC80b, and the seppy Diamond Cruiser.

Other CW era ships that are relatively easy to convert are:

Z-95 Headhunters, Hyena bombers, Toscan 8Q, Republic Cruiser (The one with a Venator front end and consular engines), Charger C70 (Consular with more guns), Corellian Corvettes (Repaint Tantive IV), Providence destroyers (Re-paint Invisible Hand), Starvipers (Not CW, but fringe... Use Micro Machines.  Still Class 3 size), and Interceptor IV Frigates from EaW (Convert Wild Karrde).  You can also chop up starfighters to make "uglies" pretty easily.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

Here's a list of my custom ships:  Some are not canon, or at least the names are not.

@ RogueKnight

Thanks for the help! It's much appreciated.

Also look for the Rogue Fleet thread for a list of ships with instructions on how to build them.  If you can't find the instructions, let me know.  I Have them, and the V-19 is one of the ones I made instructions for.

I found this but the links are dead unfortunately. Great thread though, hope you still have those instructions.

Not sure what ship you mean by "Republic Carrier"

This is the Republic carrier i had in mind: www.starwars.com/databank/starship/repub.... It looks kind of like a Consular with a large cargo hold mounted underneath, so it might be relatively easy to make one.

And for the Sep Landing craft, there is a AMT ERTL snapfast model that works well.  I am not sure of their availability any more, but they are usually $5.00 or less.

The AMT/ERTL separatist landing craft is nowhere to be found sadly, so still searching for an alternative.

Also, if you go to starshipmodeler.com, one company called Odyssey Slipways has models that work well for the SSB scale, namely the Dreadnaughts, Assault Frigates, and MC80b, and the seppy Diamond Cruiser.

Now these are fantastic, although they require some painting which i'm not that familiar with. Especially the assault frigates and Dreadnaught will do nicely i think.
Do you know if Carracks, Lancers, Marauders and LAAT/i would fit in as well?

Z-95 Headhunters, Hyena bombers, Toscan 8Q, Republic Cruiser (The one with a Venator front end and consular engines), Charger C70 (Consular with more guns), Corellian Corvettes (Repaint Tantive IV), Providence destroyers (Re-paint Invisible Hand), Starvipers (Not CW, but fringe... Use Micro Machines.  Still Class 3 size), and Interceptor IV Frigates from EaW (Convert Wild Karrde).  You can also chop up starfighters to make "uglies" pretty easily.

I thought of making some Z-95's already, basically a chopped X-wing right? The other conversions are also some i might give a try. Corellian corvettes and Interceptors seem to be the easier ones, so i'll probably start there.
The Micro Machines StarVipers are great, and i also found a Skipray model that i think would fit as well!

Some of you guys here are excellent customizers but my skill level is not that advanced so for now i'll stick with the easier ones and the already made models.

Speaking of customizing, that's one impressive list of customs you posted by the way! I'm looking forward to seeing the customs section of your site when it goes live at some point.

And to everyone: I'm still looking for fringe ships that could be used for SSB. Especially some capitals, cruisers etc. so the faction could be able to match up to the other fleets. Any suggestions are welcome, non-fringe ships as well.

Yes, I do have the instructions.

Here's what I have:

Light Side:

Eta-5 (Plan to redo)
K-Wing
Miy'Til
V-19
Dreadnaught Alternative (Instead of buying models)
FarStar
N-1 Bomber
Y-Wing LongProbe
Lots of re-paints and Micro Machine ideas

Dark Side:
TIE Heavy Bomber
TIE Phantom
Preybird (Plan to redo)
Star Galleon
Toscan 8Q
TIe Avenger (Plan to redo)

That republic carrier is a troop transport, quite small.. but no reason you can't create your own ship based on that! I've done similar modifications..

The Carracks, Lancers, and LAAT are, sadly, WAY too small.  the carracks and lancers are 3-4 cm...  you could use them, but it just wouldn't look right.

As to painting, it takes practice, but it's not too difficult.  And skills will improve over time.  My modeling and painting skills were bad when I first started, but I've gotten quite a bit better.  Nobody starts out mastering a skill.  You have to practice :-).  If you're insterested, I highly recommend it.  I use Gamers Workshop paints, but there are many other brands out there.

I forgot about the skipray... That model works just fine :-)  The Z-95's are basically single, fixed wing X-Wings.  Use cardboard or plasticard (polystyrene) to make wings, etc.  You can get the polystyrene online at hobbyclinic.com or through hobby shops that carry railroad modelling supplies.

Start out simple with the customs, and as your skill improves, get more complex.  You can do it.  :-)  Just requires patience.

I have started on my customs site.  I've got a lot of projects going right now, but hopefully in a few weeks I'll have a decent update to my site.

About the only fringe ship I have made was converting the wild karrde to an Interceptor IV frigate...  You can get freighters and such in the form of micro machines...

Feel free to message me if you ever have any questions :-)

Well i went on eBay to search for Micro Machines figures. I ordered some and got them in the mail the other day and must say, ther're a nice find! I got some Z-95s (a bit too large but they'll do), some Skiprays and a some StarVipers. They all look good next to the original models, although their paintjobs aren't nearly as good. I'll try to improve those at a later point. Also got a Flurry to work as a Quasar Fire carrier. And they were easy to put on bases thanks to the holes for their original bases. So i said goodbye to a bunch of Geonosian Starfighters and a Sith Infiltrator, and hello to my new additions Laughing

By the way i found a CR-20 carrier from Odyssey Slipways here (close to the bottom of the page):
www.starfleet-models.com/Models/Company/...
Sadly, they don't ship out of the country. So i'm actually not able to get any!! If someone would be able to help me out by ordering a pack and sending it overseas, i would really appreciate it! Anyways, i hope the link is helpful.

EDIT: @RogueKnight, could you please post the instructions you mentioned earlier for the V-19 Torrent and the other ships? The links in the original thread were dead last i checked.

I was just looking around when i stumbled upon this model of the Star Forge, and thought i would post it if anyone would be interested. It's kind of pricy and the seller is based in Spain, but anyways here goes:
www.transilvaniamodels.com/catalogo/star...

for that CR-20, it is sold on multiple sites.  Check www.starshipmodeler.com

I already checked there, they don't have it. There are no Dreadnaught left either, and that's one i really wanted. Googling the CR-20 also leaves me empty-handed, except for www.starfleet-models.com.

Did Odyssey Slipways stop production by any chance? Because there doesn't seem to be many products available from them anywhere.
hmmm not sure.  I hope not. Cause I want more dreads...

try e-mailing him.  OdysseySlipways@aol.com  I am not sure if this e-mail is still active though.

I wrote him on that address, but didn't get an answer. But i tried contacting Starship Modeler since they carry Odyssey Slipways, and they told me that OS still produce models. So no worries, you will be able to get more dreads. They actually already restocked and i was able to get a few. Laughing

I also asked about the Diamond Cruiser and the CR20 troop transport, and he said he would get a batch of those in stock as well. Now that's great customer service! So it seems i can get some of those after all. Yay!
And for those who are interested, i just found these starship models:

Sith Derriphan-class battleship:
armouryhobbies.com/index.php?main_page=p...

New republic bothan assault cruiser:
armouryhobbies.com/index.php?main_page=p...

Old republic Hammerhead-class cruiser:
armouryhobbies.com/index.php?main_page=p...

I'm not sure if these are in scale with SSB (The Bothan Cruiser might be) but they look cool.
That's good that you were able to get some models.  I have seen those armoury hobbies ships, but due to the limited quantities and the look of some of the ships, I think I'll scratch build my own at some point.  The sith BB looks good, but the Bothan cruiser could be better.

I ended up buying this:  www.transilvaniamodels.com/catalogo/arma...

It's a good scale... In between an ISD and the Executor.  Perfect for a large Class 2 or a small Class 1.

Wow that's one nice looking model! I don't know it but it would look good in any imperial fleet. Somehow i missed that when i browsed that store. But i googled the manufacturer (Scale Solutions) and found an equally nice but pricy model of the Eclipse SSD:
users.hunterlink.net.au/~ddwwp/ScaleSolu...
I'll bump this old thread, because Odyssey Slipways is indeed still going, and has in fact JUST released the Republic Light Cruiser in three scales. I bought 1/2256, but for SSB I'm thinking that the 1/4222 would work better for ya. Plus, it's cheaper, no assembly I know of, and you get two. They should be about 1 3/4" long, as the 1/2256 is 3 1/8th".
Behold!

The CR-20 is still there (at Starship Modeler) too, but there is (as of this moment) only one in stock. You get three ships.

EDIT: After this post and some pondering, I decided to order the 1/4222 pack myself. Eventually, I'll let y'all know (with pics) how it all shakes out.

If I remember correctly, the CR20s are too small.  But this ship looks promising... And to think I made one on my own out of a venator and a consular lol.

Oh, I'd say the CR-20s are definitely too small for SSB. There's fighters that are bigger. But it's in scale with the Light Cruiser, Venator model etc.
Trouble is SSB's "relative scale" was SO freakily "relative" that it's kinda hard to make matches. The 1/2256 cruiser is almost the size of the SSB Venator, but the 1/4222 one (while acceptable next to the Venator) is smaller than the SSB Blockade Runner.
Like I said, once I get the smaller one I'll take a shot or two of a spread of ships.

no.  So its pretty much a guessing game.  But models do exist that "fit" with SSB

I know. I was being facetious.

FWIW, one of my players has some Cloud Cars and Z-95 Headhunters that are just about perfect. He says he got them from some older miniatures line from the 80s or something. I'll ask him if he can tell me exactly what line it was if anyone's interested. I imagine they're hard to find and expensive now though.

Micro Machines maybe?
Micro machines is all I can think of; the Z-95s are indeed a great match. The Skipray is workable too.
Well, I got my smaller light cruisers, and... they really look too small. So the one is too big, the other too small. Figures! I'll get 'em shot before too long (not today; gotta work). The large one has it's finished gray base-coat, but I'm kinda dreading painting/decaling so I've been putting it off! I will also need to find a suitable scale SSM base for the thing(s).

Okay, here's the ships. The new ones are NOT fully painted, just the base-coat, but I wanted you all to see the sizes we're working with and what's available.

FIRST, here's the 1/2256 Light Cruiser with it's stablemates in constant scale (more or less; even Odyssey Slipways isn't perfect) alongside the Revell Venator kit. These are the various vessels in "real life" scale.

Next, here's both of the new Light Cruisers along representative SSB miniatures. You see the 1/2256 version is kinda pushing it alongside the Venator, which is why I thought the 1/4222 one might work better; no-go. Though it looks great next to the SSB Venator, it looks silly with the Republic cruiser and downright idiotic beside the Millenium Falcon.

SO, conclusion? If you want to do this I have to say the large Light Cruiser is the better option. Trouble is, it will set you back some 22 bucks, comes in two resin pices that are a bit fidgety if you aren't used to that sort of thing, and - oh - it's currently sold out at Starship Modeler (only place I know that carries these) precisely because it DOES go with the Revell model kit. I do not at this time intend to adapt either as SSB miniatures, because I'm not coughing up for another one!

Did they have Micro Machines in the 80s? I can't remember. He said they were from a toy line that came out shortly after the original movies. I'll ask him for specifics. I think he's only got Headhunters and Cloud Cars from that line. They're perfect scale, and he's mounted them on SSB bases, so they look almost like they belong as part of the set.

EDIT: He says they are indeed Micro Machines (from the Star Wars Epic Collections 1-3). Anyone know if they're still available and, if so, how expensive they are? Is there a "set list" for them anywhere?

@Imperator: That big Venator is awesome!

I'm pretty sure I've got some cloud cars and headhunters that I would be willing to trade for some SWM, if you're interested.  I'll have to dig them out of my closet, though.  From what I remember, the Cloud Cars are a bit big, and my headhunters had some seriously warped plastic.
I have a MicroMachine Z-95... It's a bit big.  But the Skipray and Freighters are a great scale.  The Flurry is as well, and the corellian corvettes can work as CR70 (instead of CR90) frigates.

That 1/2256 Light Cruiser looks sweet. But yeah, out of print already. I like Oddessy Slipways, but they turn over products a bit too quick.

Halber
Oh, I don't think it's out of production; it's just sold out. The thing just got released - not two weeks gone - but the 1/2256 version got snapped up pretty quick.
I'll agree with your sentiment, though. TRY to find the Blockade Runner or Republic cruiser!

Shriwirr & Flurry will work well too, I think, but
A) I know I have loose ones somewhere, so I don't wanna rip open the box, and
B) I'll need to scam two capitol-ship bases from cleap, useless figures (the Assault Frigate or whatever it is comes immediately to mind)

THe Flurry and the Shriwirr both work on SSB bases, so the Shriwirr model is small for a capital ship.  I also have the Lady Luck and a number of Skiprays.  In addition, The freighter/bounty hunter ships work well too.  Hound's Tooth, IG-2000, Stinger, etc.

As to the Assault Frigate, modify the stats slightly to actually make it worth while.  For my own rule set/stat cards, I created new stats for it and it's fast, manueverable, and has decent weapons, but still isn't a true toe to toe slugger in combat.

Other ideas:  The titanium series CIS shuttle is a bit big, but can be mounted on SSB bases for another CIS ship.  Micro Machine Corellian Corvettes work, though smaller than the Tantive IV, and the Sentinel Lander works as well, but it is slightly too big.

Here's a couple more shots, adding the Micro Machines minis for Flurry and Shriwirr to SSB bases.
Flurry, at 350 meters, worked great! The small Shriwirr model is rather unconvincing for a 900-meter vessel, but happily all the Ssi-ruuvi vessels look pretty much the same so I hereby designate it a Ssi-ruuvi Light Cruiser (400 meters. Better).

Micro Machines ships have no weathering so they look rather bland compared to SSB models. I fixed this with the "Light Cruiser" by just using a heavy black wash and quickly wiping it off. Flurry took two different shades of gray paneling hand-brushed on and, when that dried, the same quick wash.

Man, I just can't get a good pic of this. Of course, it IS nighttime, and a black background.

Found my other Skipray. Now, this'll make the most seasoned adventured soil his spacesuit!

Han Solo: "Goldenrod, bring me my brown pants!"
C-3P0: "Dear oh dear, I'd forgotten how much I hate space travel."

Skipray #2 and several other ships - IG-2000, Hound's Tooth and Stinger,  were all on "old standard" black hex bases and had to be surgically removed. Unhappily, they were well-attached and every single one lost the mounting post in the body of the ship. SO, it took a little X-Acto prepping and then a three-stage drilling to clean out the holes. I mounted the Skipray first with the spare base I had, but had to order two throw-away Lambdas and a pitchable Rebel Transport (for the Conqueror-class) for the others.
I'm THINKING about cutting & realigning the pivoting wing on the high-mounted Skipray, but this will involve drilling, pinning & gluing so I'll wait for a bit.
