5/13/2010 FtL: "A Lot of EXP Points"

This thread is for discussion of this week's From the Lab, which goes live Thursday morning on magicthegathering.com.
The standard echomage deck looks fun, just with all the removal in standard it seems a pipe dream to ever get working.
I like fun, but competitive decks. So I might not play what is optimal but they have normally been tested to have a 2/3 winrate.
When I first saw Renegade Doppelganger, it was almost immediately obvious to me that it exists primarily to give an Eldrazi "haste", which alone made it one of my favorite cards in the set.  Only last night did I also spot the leveler interaction.  But Noel is describing this badly; Transcendant Master is to be used only as the cheapest source of level counters for the Doppelganger in a white-blue deck (Coralhelm Commander fills that role in mono-blue).  Once the Doppler is as full up as it can get, you can ditch the Master rather than waste mana adding more counters to a guy who doesn't fully level until 12; with the Doppler picking up counters with generic mana in the early game,  you just want to drop some hard-to-level brute like Zulaport Enforcer or Kabira General for the game-winning swing.

Speaking of Doubling Season, while it might be crazy with Levelers, it's much crazier with Eldrazi Spawn.  My favorite play is to use Growth Spasm to stick Doubling Season on turn 4, then on turn five drop an Emrakul's Hatcher to gain six Spawn tokens.  If you have one previous Eldrazi Spawn from a Spawning Breath or Brood Birthing, you can then pop all six Spawn and play Skittering Invasion to get ten Spawn, at which point you can either throw out Spawnsire of Ulamog or just have Sarkhan Vol power a massive attack.

As far as the benefit of the rest of Magic is concerned, gold cards in Legends were executed perfectly. They got all the excitement a designer could hope out of a splashy new mechanic without using up any of the valuable design space. Truly amazing. --Aaron Forsythe's Random Card Comment on Kei Takahashi
I think the reason he didn't have Lighthouse Chronologist in the deck is because it makes a really, really bad bombo with the Doppelganger, unless you have some way to get it out on your opponent's turn ('cuz it doesn't give you an extra turn at the end of your turn, otherwise it'd be a true lock).
The Standard deck seems to be a lot of fun for non-competitive Standard enviroments.
OMG click HERE! OMG! How to autocard and use decklist format
--->
For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

I like storm crow because I really like crows in real life, as an animal, and the card isn't terribly stupid, but packs a good deal of nostalgia and also a chunck of the game's history. So it's perhaps one of the cards I have most affection to, but not because "lol storm crow is bad hurr hurr durr".

Now, now. 1994 doesn't quite qualify as "ancient".

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

Really? Really? The last couple days have been roughly every perverse fetish imaginable, but it only got "creepy" when speculation on Mother of Runes's mob affiliation came up?

Yeah, really. If my deck was going to cost $1000+, I'd at least make it good.

Absolutely. I used to loose to my buddy's Banding deck for ages, it was then that I found out about Tolaria, and I was finally able win my first game.

Normally it's difficult to pick up on your jokes/sarcasm. But this one's pretty much out there. Good progress. You have moved up to Humanoid. You'll be Human in no time.

"William's original list didn't have Lighthouse Chronologist, so I added it with the funny play in mind of playing a Lord of Shatterskull Pass, sweeping your opponent's board, then casting a Chronologist post-combat and taking another turn soon after. It also has a cheap level up trigger."

This is incredibly wrong... First of all, if the Doppleganger is already copying the Lord, then when the Chronologist came into play, it would not change (read the reminder text.) Second of all, the Doppleganger's ability ends at end of turn, and the Chronologist doesn't do anything until the end of an opponent's turn. BOMBO!!!
Where is this William Houser post he mentions?  The only place I see Doppelganger and leveler in the same sentence is in my post from two weeks ago...  I've been playing the bad deck for the past three weeks and want my credit!

He didn't say William Houser posted the idea on the forums.  William probably send the idea via email.
In the article, Noel writes:

"Consider this turn sequence: Turn one, Forest, Joraga Treespeaker. Turn two, Forest, level up the Treespeaker. Now tap it for

Green ManaGreen Mana and level it up again. It's only turn two and you've (appropriately) made it to level 2 already!"

A much better start he did not mention would be:

Turn one, Forest, Joraga Treespeaker. Turn two, Island, Training Ground, level up the

Treespeaker, Now tap for GG, and level it up twice

(or use the GG to cast another Treespeaker and level it up too,

so 6-7 Mana should be availabel at turn 3)!!

Throw Reality Spasm in the Echo Mage deck and you have infinite mana once you have enough mana sources to untap.

I heard about it in this article: The Call of Kozilek
