The Top 100 Most Powerful Magic Cards Ever (Poll)

Last post

Some of you may be wondering, haven't I done a poll like this before? The answer is yes, I have. Unfortunately, I was getting a lot of negative feedback on how I conducted the poll, and it was taking too long. So, I'm going to start over with a new way of doing things.

Read below before Voting:

Instead of doing ten at a time, post your top 50 cards ONLY. A top 100 list will be compiled from this once we get enough votes.

The Rules:

1) "Most Powerful" means just that. Don't vote to be original or funny, and believe me, it's pretty obvious when you are. Don't judge your placings on whether the cards were fun or "good for the game", judge them on their power. A lot of people were voting for Order of the Golden Cricket as a joke previously, and that card doesn't belong in the top 500, let alone top 100.

2) This list will only cover cards that have been DCI legal. In other words, no voting for ante cards or un-set cards, since they were never legal in DCI-sanctioned tournaments. You can, however, vote in Chaos Orb, Shahrazad, and, though not exactly a good choice, Falling Star. Those three cards might be banned now, but they were legal when they first came out.

3) No Voting In Basic Lands. If you object, then don't vote at all.

4) Vote in Color Cycles as one slot, unless there is a clear choice as to which one is best. For example, the Moxes, the Dual Lands, and the Fetch Lands will count for one slot to avoid clogging up the list. If Circle of Protection: Red makes it, however, it will get its own slot because it's clearly better than all the other circles (don't argue, you know it). You can argue which mox is the best in your own thread.

That's pretty much it. Post your top 50 cards today!

these are all missing:
dream halls
isochron scepter
counterspell

i also don't feel that jitte should be on the list, as it's simply a utility card.  never (i repeat, never) has that card given me a problem.  maybe top 100, but definitely not top 50.
I dare anyone to list 500 cards that are better then order of the golden cricket. (Hint: You can't, because its the 10th best card in the game).

My List: Vintage restricted list + Force, Goyf (that white one that counts enchantments obviously), Order of the Golden Cricket, Duals, Fetches + random other cards.

dream halls
isochron scepter
counterspell

It sure as heck has given me problems, without a doubt.

Scepter may be a good choice, and I considered it, but counterspell isn't that broken. It's broken, and is top 100 material, but neither is good for top 50.

And while Dream Halls is a VERY powerful card, I think Flash is better. No other card is broken enough to win turn zero.

how do you win turn zero with flash?

and i think dream halls is more powerful than something like...black vise or chaos orb

i mean, turn three discard some blue card from your hand, get inkwell leviathan  or now that rise of the eldrazi is out, discard a colorless card and throw out a 15/15

how do you win turn zero with flash?

Start with Gemstone caverns in your hand, playing second.  play it, remove simian spirit guide, use flash on Protean hulk, it will die. search for 4 disciple of the vault and 4 phyrexian marauder and 4 shifting wall. the artifacts die and you have your opponent lose 32 life, all on their first turn of the game.

I will abstain from voting.

If you really want to do things differently, how about not dismissing people's opinions by disqualifying cards you don't agree with? Voting is a self-correcting system, if a single entry is a "joke" or unpopular then it will fall aside in time in favor of more serious contenders. Also, if there is such a "clear choice" of cards that stand out as better, then there's no need to vote. It seems to me that you're more interested in having your own opinions validated than finding out what the forum community as a whole likes.

Also, you may be aware that there are several different kinds of players. Each group values different things, a 1- or 2-mana instant may not be as powerful as, say, a creature that draws four cards immediately and ends the game in two turns. Or a card may be useless by itself but an instant win with another card. Are you looking for the top Spike cards, Timmy cards, or Johnny cards?

Being told what I can and can't vote for, and being unclear about what your personal definition of "powerful" is, only that my vote will be rejected if it doesn't match it, I find this exercise pointless and ultimately frustrating. Feel free to flame me for expressing my opinion, I've been posting on the Internet, and BBS message boards long before that, enough to develop an asbestos coating on my skin. You can't say anything that hasn't been said to me before.

youre asking for the top 50
and compiling votes

it doesnt matter if I put counterspell at 1 or 50, its still a vote for it

once again, you throw out all pretense of actually having a poll. This one is as biased and worthless as the last.

yes, actually, it does matter. I'm using a point system to dictate the placing, and the higher up the cards are placed, the more points the card gets.

*sigh* I wish people wouldn't say this is biased. It cuts deeper than you think. Cry

REMEMBER FLUFFY, mercilessly slain by the bastard Useless Mancer
Fluffy, the cute and cuddly baloth beatstick of marshmellowy fluffyness and lolz, om-nom-noming Keeper's wicked soul; its insane, deadly amount of cuteness rips the fabric of reality to shreds, its pink, soft, round teeth dripping with honey, every breath spreading the repugnant smell of fresh flowers, this horrifying creature of destruction devastates Keeper by spreading its deadly, all-powerful fluff over the countryside, laying waste to dragon and furry bunny alike. It comes howling out of the east, an endless rattling and gnashing of teeth, a twisted grinding pull on the very fabric of reality threatening to consume body and mind alike in an endless glimmering pink torrent. Nothing is more terrible than the sun glittering on its teeth, save perhaps the light glancing off the oily tones of the sequins that cover its hotpants. Of course, there was that child who tried to eat Fluffy, mistaking him for a giant, walking piece of cotton candy. That child... is now the almighty leader of Fluffy, controlling his every move, sending him to devour the people that cross his path. And Keeper. Because we said so. Nothing can stop Fluffy's march to victory, spreading the sweet smell of strawberries where ever it lays its mighty paw. Followed by many jolly fairies singing joyful songs about Fluffy's cuddlyness, the baloth wanders the mountains of Zendikarland on a quest to share the love with Keeper, tough love that is...
Fluffy, we'll miss you friend. We'll miss you...

A drop of the eldrazi urine fell right in his eye. "Oh, man. Now I'm pissed too." As we were moving on, we were looking around on the innocent nature. Two baloths were doing it on the road so we had to make a little detour. The pools of piss were kinda unpleasant but at least it was warm so we had no trouble at night. "One gets used to piss running down your face you know." said my companion. "F'shizzle." answered I stoicly and kicked two rabbits, who were doing nasty things to each other's ass, in the ass. "Man one can't take a spit here without hitting some shamming animals." "Word. Zendikar sucks. Hope the eldrazi contribute a little to the population regulation." As my companion said that, a gigantic, 20 meters tall eldrazi slithered by. On it's arms and tentacles were remains of birds, rabbits, baloths, angels, planeswalkers, dragons, krakens and a few cities. We stood up and clapped loudly. "A few bitches less." If you enjoy living in France, Luxembourg, Poland or any other, older nation, that's fantastic. I just don't see why there's such a huge uproar about a volcano that is mostly affecting a niche group of people.

Really? I don't really see the greatness.
It's an Ox. In a PILLARFIELD. That's like, a field of frickin' PILLARS, but to this Ox it just looks like an ordinary field of grass - because he is so BADASS.

it doesnt matter if I put counterspell at 1 or 50, its still a vote for it

once again, you throw out all pretense of actually having a poll. This one is as biased and worthless as the last.

yes, actually, it does matter. I'm using a point system to dictate the placing, and the higher up the cards are placed, the more points the card gets.

*sigh* I wish people wouldn't say this is biased. It cuts deeper than you think.

Then just consider mine in order, its close enough.

This is what you should do:

Break each round of voting into set, then colour.  For instance: "Everyone vote for the best black card from Homelands!"

Then, catogorize each vote so we have the top cards of each colour (and mulitcolour + artifacts).  It's a hell of a lot more interesting than just the "top 100 cards of all time".
Magic is a game that's too complex for this to work. That coupled with your biased way of evaluating leaves you with a result that, at very best, is your view of what people consider the most powerful cards ever. Not a list of the most powerful cards ever. Your way of doing this displays, among other things, what in scientific research is called selection bias.

Please keep in mind that I'm not saying that this means you're stupid or that I comment on anything personal to you.

i mean, turn three discard some blue card from your hand, get inkwell leviathan  or now that rise of the eldrazi is out, discard a colorless card and throw out a 15/15

Colorless cards doesn't share color with anything.

I guess Dream Halls is more broken because you can do 4xConflux, All Suns' Dawn, another 4xConflux, etc..

Also, this is a bad idea, because your average poster can't correctly evaluate power level of other cards. A lot of people would probably put Lotus on the top, because it's this famous old rare worth a shitload, but it is probably not the best card out there.

black lotus is a little bit too powerful. It is the ultimate enabler. Pretty much any deck gets faster/better with black lotus I don't see how it could not be considered the most powerful card. If it wasn't restricted in vintage then every game would be decided on a die roll and not just 60+%.

Don't be too smart to have fun
It is powerful, yes. But is it more powerful than say, Ancestral Recall or Yawgmoth's Will?
Being restricted in Vintage doesn't mean it's powerful. [c]Ponder[/C] is restricted in Vintage too.

I personally say yes it is. It is hard to evaluate such different cards next to each other so let me just give you my line of reasoning. If Black lotus was removed from the format the average power level of vintage legal decks would drop more than if we removed either of those cards.

It may be more powerful than the other examples, but it isn't clearly so. Comparing cards of different types (creature vs instant, artifact vs sorcery) is subjective. An unblockable 1/1 creature is more powerful than Lightning Bolt because it's a permanent, and thus is worth more than 3 damage over the course of the game. Others would say that the surprise factor of the bolt makes it more powerful, especially compared to the delay in attacking with the creature.

So, is powering up a single spell, or a couple of cheaper spells, more powerful than filling your hand? More so in the early game but one Lotus doesn't come up every time you draw your seven. Yawg's Will is useless early game but an instant win later.

Most cards in this game are interdependent. Card A is more powerful than Card B in some situations, but less powerful in others. A White Knight is clearly more powerful than Runeclaw Bear because it has two more abilities for a slightly more restrictive cost, but how do they compare to Negate? If your opponent plays Wrath of God which would you rather have in hand?

Ultimately, there has to be more criteria than raw power to judge the cards. Benefits vs. drawbacks, permanents vs. single use, color vs. colorless, early game vs. late game, all these and more factor in to how useful a given card is.

i mean, turn three discard some blue card from your hand, get inkwell leviathan  or now that rise of the eldrazi is out, discard a colorless card and throw out a 15/15

i had somebody cruel ultimatum me twice in a row with dream halls, it wasn't pretty.  then they dream halls'd out a large creature and just killed me.  that card is broken (especially combined with that card in mirrodin block that lets you play stuff whenever you want.  your opponent swings, discard a black card, damnation  ha.

but even without the instant speed enabeler, dream halls lets you play anything you want by turn 3, thats power that shouldn't exist.  mana drain becomes force of will...turn one, land, sol ring.  your opponent reveals what color they're playing.  turn 2, black lotus, tap sol ring, dream halls.  discard white card, iona.  maybe even throw in a painter's servant for good measure

I don't know that's about as far as I can go before the list just starts becoming really arbitary.

Uhm, you're using an example with Sol Ring and Black Lotus. How often is that going to come up? With the same situation, I could have gone t2:
Identity Crisis - A card they couldn't dream of recovering from.
Enduring Ideal - Creating a lock that wins the game within three turns after.
[c]Auriok Salvagers[/C] - Generate infinite mana.

Yes, Dream Halls is broken, but not because you can play it turn 1 with two of the best cards in the game. And compared to other cards, Dream Halls is probably not as good as a lot of other decks out there, like storm, because it isn't as resiliant.
----------------------------------------
Whenever the question of what the best card is, a lot of people say Yawgwin. While they might be wrong, it just further proves my point.

As long as you can do a geometric proof of anything on this card, target opponent must be doing one. Otherwise, he or she loses the game. (both games. you just lost the game.)

but even without the instant speed enabeler, dream halls lets you play anything you want by turn 3, thats power that shouldn't exist.  mana drain becomes force of will...turn one, land, sol ring.  your opponent reveals what color they're playing.  turn 2, black lotus, tap sol ring, dream halls.  discard white card, iona.  maybe even throw in a painter's servant for good measure

Whenever the question of what the best card is, a lot of people say Yawgwin. While they might be wrong, it just further proves my point.

yeah, it is slow, but once it hits, it's basically game.  like you said, just discard some random card, boom identity crisis

i brought up the lotus and sol ring just to show how fast it can be done.

you could turn 1 play a u/b land.
turn 2 island
turn 3 island, tap all 3, dark ritual, dream halls, then discard some card and play a killer spell.

i still think dream halls is one of the strongest cards i've ever seen (and ever faced)
I believe, Yumyums, you also had timetwister listed twice.

And Nick Necromancer, Balance was listed twice on your list. Also, I noticed you certainly brought some interesting options to the table, I never expected anyone to vote for Fireball. Not that I'm criticizing you for it. However, Counterspell over Mana Drain? I have to wonder why you chose that.

Thanks for catching my error.  I'll go back and fix that in a bit.  Actually, you're right about mana drain.  It more than deserves a spot, and since I listed balance twice i can substitute it now.  Counterspell was too iconic for me not to list.  I never played mana drain, so it just didn't come to mind as quickly as the others did...not that I had the joy of playing black lotus and the like either, lol, but again I guess they were just more memorable to me.

Being iconic shouldn't warrant an inclusion, this is about the most powerful cards. I'm sure ShadowACS will correct you on that.
Counterspell has enabled as many decks as mana drain. Power isn't only what it can do on its own- but what it can enable. Thus manamorphose made it on my list
