3/24/2010 BoaB: "Budget Elves"

This thread is for discussion of this week's Building on a Budget, which goes live Wednesday morning on magicthegathering.com.
Surprisingly, I am fine with JVL not caring about the Jund matchup
Finally, a budget deck in the Building on a Budget column.  It's been a while, hasn't it?

And seriously, JvL, was that really so hard?  Why can't you do something like this every week?  Admittedly I'd prefer not playing Nissa Revane, but it's not $20/card anymore IRL, so I'll live with it.

Anyway, finally, I can say this was a BoaB article I'm happy with, although albeit I scrolled directly to the decklist then directly to the "Discuss on the Message Boards" icon without actually reading the content.
Pretty much buget eldrazi monument.

@Ertai87: nice to know you're happy with an article you didn't read.

@JVL bravo at once again nailing it on the head! I always try to sleeve up your decks when I have the cards necessary to do so. Will definitely sleeve this one up.
I would have killed, literally ended someones life, to NOT have Arrogant Bloodlord riding a giant ant... Good times:

but where DID the other fork come from?
Show
Lord_Zed: I was at my friends house when this happened. He's married and his wife was an excellent baker. She had baked a homemade apple pie the night before. I was hungry, and my friend convinced me to try those low carb monster drinks. Before this day, I had never triend energy drinks before. Boy was I in for a treat. When I tried that first monster, I really enjoyed the flavor, but the taste that it left in my mouth wasn't so good. What was my solution? Drink another! before I could finish drinking that 2nd monster, I felt it already kicking in(these drinks were not very far apart, we're talking minutes here) my friend decided that it was a good idea to whip out that fresh pie his wife made the night before. I didn't know what to do, since I felt incredibly invigorated, and at the same time, freaked out by the rush I was feeling, but I was also hungry, and my friend have me an entire plate with a fork and said "help yourself." He extended his saucer to me, and I cut him a piece of the pie and handed it to him, then I looked at the pie, noticed that the pie was in an aluminum holder, and dumped the entire pie onto my plate and started eating it with 2 forks. I don't know where I found that other fork, it probably came from my friend. Anyhow, his wife wasn't happy, and I was already in magical christmas land. 2 days later, I was in my friends bed and I slept for 14 hours. His wife outlawed my from having any of her baked goods for a while(which sucked because I could just show up at there house, steal some sweets, and leave) and said I couldn't have any energy drinks at her house, unless under close watch. My friend, on the other hand, had to take me out to a steak dinner, because apparently I won a bet where I climbed a tree and didn't die.

And so the pot met the kettle.
I'd just like to chime in that I care way more about the building part of these articles than the budget part.  The latter is mostly interesting just because it provides a deckbuilding constraint (my own constraint is mainly the cards I have available).  I don't copy the decks, but I think a lot can be learned from watching the thought process that goes into designing these.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the design of the plane of Golamo in the Great Designer Search 2!

No one really likes to play against elves in the casual room. It seems like every time I pull out my elf deck the opponent complains or just conceeds on the spot. Last week I put it on the shelf for a good while and I probably won't pull an elf deck out again in standard or extended for at least a couple of months. So in that regard I didn't really like the article all that much. Add to this the fact that he made a totally fun and super powerful extended elves deck just a couple of weeks ago (seemed a little bit more of a budget deck than this one too but I could be mistaken).

I appreciate some of the great budget combos / individual cards that are part of this deck. leatherback baloth is a budget friendly card that is super powerful. The quest and joraga combo is a pretty strong budget combo. I don't know how Nissa (or even elvish archdruid really) is considered budget but that is a different topic for a different time.
Don't be too smart to have fun
Nissa may not be "budget" in the usual sense, but she is a budget planeswalker. Since she is not even needed, aside from assuring you have a steady stream of 2/3s hitting the board, you could easily add in a substitute. Anything that involves tons of creatures attacking in unison seems like prime Beastmaster Ascension material.
Boooo! Cats > Elves. :P
Pretty much buget eldrazi monument.

My thoughts exactly. Nothing to see here, moving on...
I must admit, I hadnt realised the synergy between Quest for the Gemblades and Joraga Warcaller before... I might have to find room for it in my mono-green deck.

Something to consider for this deck would be Quest for Renewal as well.

It needs something mainboard to deal with fliers... maybe Gargoyle Castle, Windstorm or Slingbow Trap.

anything>elves, I had expected something more then the obvious elf deck...

I'm not happy this article was written. I have been watching the price on the Elvish Archdruid for a few weeks now and it was finally dropping to around 1 ticket each before this article is written. I suspect that won't be the case anymore.

As far as Nissa goes, I think it shows that even a niche planeswalker at mythic rarity is going to be out of the hands of most budget players. It's unfortunate that a lot of players will be unable to play with any planeswalkers due to their inherrent overpowered presence on the board causing their prices to remain out of reach for most budgets, even when their use is so niche like in the case of Nissa.

In regards to BoaB finally returning to the casual room, I am very happy to see it. I don't like playing tournament games because they limit the number of viable options. In the casual room you can build truley budget decks and pull of some fun/cool things the tournament players wouldn't let you do due to winning on turn 2 with hypergenesis or something else rediculous.

BoaB to me was always about building fun quirky decks that had a good chance at winning a casual game, not a deck that had to win and sacrificed fun an unique interactions to do it. Please do more casual decks.
This is going to be my favourite BoaB JVL has done yet. I also like the fact that he pointed out Nissa isn't very budget friendly, and I can't really find anything to complain about without simply bashing (ohhh, elves are so liner and un-original). I'm also very happy that JVL decided to simply ignore the fact that elves aren't very competitive, and the Quest/Warcaller is a really neat combo.
Satisfied reader here, and I'm glad JVL stood up and actually said last week was just Jund-hating-Jund.

Oh, and a good replacement for Nissa is either Slingbow Trap, or Quest for Renewal.

Finally, a budget deck in the Building on a Budget column.  It's been a while, hasn't it?

no, it hasn't. many of his decks are budget even by the standards of this deck and all are budget by his standard.

And seriously, JvL, was that really so hard?  Why can't you do something like this every week?

because in general it's not what he's interested in and it's boring to me?

Admittedly I'd prefer not playing Nissa Revane, but it's not $20/card anymore IRL, so I'll live with it.

or you could sub in something else, as he addressed this fact in the article (that you didn't read).

It needs something mainboard to deal with fliers... maybe Gargoyle Castle, Windstorm or Slingbow Trap.

i would go with windstorm. it deals with swarms of little guys (emeria angel style) and it deals with big guys (baneslayer angel). the other two don't deal with both.

after its not so great showing in the competitive rooms, i would have liked to see him work on the deck and then try it out again. even if that just meant putting some bloodbraids and lightning bolts in it.
Yawn, another boring deck. Not as boring as last week, but still pretty dull. I mean really, elves? Reeeeeeally?

Seeing some of the ROE spoilers though, it may be even hard for Jacob to make a deck which will be boring with some of the awesomely fun cards which are coming out. I still have some hope, as little as it may be.

Edit: I see people saying that he addressed the issue with Nissa not being budget, but he just said "Replace it with whatever", which to me isn't much of a suggestion.

I liked this article a lot. The warcaller/gemblades synergy was interesting, the strategy was a good one, and the biggest complaint I've heard is that Nissa Revane isn't budget, which he addressed. JVL, if you read this, please keep testing your decks part in the tournament room, part in the casual room. The tournament room matches help show how this deck would do at, say, an FNM, but going against the same few archetypes just gets boring after a while. The casual room shows how it could do against a deck that you're not expecting to face (since there are a lot more strategies, you can't tell what you're up against,) and it never gets old to play games against completely new and unexpected strategies.

Budget Elves

is it creative? Of course not it's eldrazi green without eldrazi monument

is it innovative? yes the quest for the gemblades synergy is great and i'll admit I never thought of it before

is it budget? Yes even if nissa is 5.50 a piece the total deck only cost me 22 tix to build(all i had before buying cards were visionary, llanowar, and overrun)

is it fun? Yes it is, though i've always been partial to elves

so on my list of criteria the deck does pretty well.  There are only so many ways to do elves so its hard to hold creativity against him where as last week was just an update to a deck he has done before.

Overall, I was pleased this week.  JvL presented a fun, highly budgeted for him, casual/competitive deck.  This is the type of article I love.

Rating- 4.25 out of 5
I like fun, but competitive decks. So I might not play what is optimal but they have normally been tested to have a 2/3 winrate.
Kind of interesting with Gemblades, but overall I'm not interested in elf decks.

I'd love to see Jacob take a weirdo fringe card that is not used often, and build a cool deck around it like the days of yore.
I knew there had to be at least one other spell that put counters on a creature, and finally found this one: Strength of the Tajuru. It can easily replace Nissa, and possibly buff your Joraga Warcaller far more than Quest for the Gemblades could.
so far the deck works well, but gets manaflooded on occasion...if you are willing to spend the tix i would definitely take out 8 forests for 4 misty rainforests and 4 verdant catacombs

so far the deck works well, but gets manaflooded on occasion...if you are willing to spend the tix i would definitely take out 8 forests for 4 misty rainforests and 4 verdant catacombs

So use some Omnath, Locus of Mana for fun and amusement.

why would i use that guy instead of just fetchlands to help with the mana?
I like fun, but competitive decks. So I might not play what is optimal but they have normally been tested to have a 2/3 winrate.

Because it's something new and unexpected to a simple elf deck.
It's interesting that you guys always ask for new things from BoaB and when I suggest something new you reject it for... fetchlands.

He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

You really do have to love the range of people complaining.

"It's not budget enough!"
"It's not original!"
"Put in Fetchlands!"

Sigh.

I do agree that not every deck has to be a tournament winner, sometimes it is nice to see a deck that is just fun to play and can get you there if you're lucky. But just throwing out a deck that's only going to win in casual games is not what I want here. I can come up with those on my own. I think JvL does a great job considering the constraints he has, and I would much rather he put out decks that I may have to chase a couple of cards to build, rather than 30 commons and a few junk rares.

As far as creativity goes, I for one think this really isn't a cheap eldrazi build. It's very similar at face value, but I really do think it's different enough to not be labled as such.

And have some freaking creativity! Instead of complaining you can't get the cards in the exact decklist, use your brain, and replace them with something you do have that will work. Seriously, why does everyone need all the answers handed to them on a plate?

And the advice of adding fetchlands... what deck doesn't work better with them? Is it really something that needs to be said?

On a less agrivated note if all you want is a casual build, Mycoloth can be really fun when used with Gem Blades (even better with beastmaster ascension). So can Goblin Razerunners.
Beastmaster ascension beats overrun most of the time.  Canopy cover is another card to consider too.
