Everyone wants an LAAT gunship...

... so try this one.
These are pix of the new Revell/Monogram snapkit. I pillaged these shots from Squadron Hobbies, but by way of apology I'm linking the sci-fi page on their website for y'all's perusal. They're a VERY old & reliable hobby company - so no worries.
They have a great deal on these things right now; the MSRP is $29.99, and Tower Hobbies has them for $26.99, but Squadron has them up for $19.99. You just can't beat that with a stick, my friends. It's 1/72d scale, making them smaller than SWM, but as big or bigger than either the Action Fleet or Transformers offerings. Being predecorated snapkits, they're within the abilities of all but the youngest or most manually-challenged gamers to put together. I still recommend some glue and a razor knife, though. They're also light, being model kits, and so will mount to bases handily.
So in the words of Canderous, "here it is!" Your best shot at a Gunship for your games. Enjoy.

Imperator,

Thanks for the great find.  You don't happen to have one yet with a mini for scale do you?  I am wondering if the clone troopers that come with it are closer in scale to the minis or to the Action Fleet figures.

At last we will have our revenge.
Totally boughted.  Thanks for the heads-up!  I got two - I figure that'll be enough for any scenario I'd want to run.

Though it pains me grievously to say it, model-dog that I am, I... probably will not buy it.
Not 'cos it's in any way inferior or I am not interested, but rather because
1. I have SO MUCH CRAP I have to start choosing wisely. No room!!
2. Times are very hard.
3. And, first and foremost, I already possess the incredible Code 3 die-cast gunship from Master Replicas. Damned thing cost me over $200. But it's awesomeness is off the charts - and with that, and A+B, I cannot justify buying a snap-together model kit of it (at least not right now). SO, this go-round, I will leave it to y'all to post pictures and a review!

BUT, sight-unseen I believe the included figures are closer to Action Fleet than the minis game figs.

That's a long-debated bone of contention. 1/72 is 25mm, and SWM is about 30mm and so the general concensus is they're in the neighborhood of 1/55th to 1/60th.

Huh! Now, there's a definitive answer that's likely been up for years. I wonder if anyone has actually bothered to measure the lads?
So, I thought I would. I grabbed my millimeter ruler, found a cross-section of bare-headed human males, and gave it the test.
Yup - 34-35mm.
A handful are larger (Roan Fel comes to mind), but most are pretty much what Wizards states.
So now, to try and convert that to scale....

Someone do the math for me. 34mm = 1 3/8 inches. An "average male" is 70 inches. If I use estimated decimals (which I can do),  70" divided by 1.35" (a close estimate of 3/8") equals 51.85. So I interpret this to mean 1/52d human height, or 1/52d scale. Is that correct thinking? I'm strong in the Force with the Queen's English, but much less so with math.
That seems big to me, so I'm off to find some 1/48th scale model figures for comparison (I'm on a Mission, now).

A quick search shows that 35mm is about 1:52.  Does that sound right?

So, a rough estimate is that a 1:52 scale gunship would be about 13.1 inches long, 12.8 inch wingspan, and about 4.6 inches high.

LEFT TO RIGHT: three 1/48th scale minis, four Star Wars minis, three minis from the old "Cantina Action Scene" kit, and two 1/72d scale minis.
Though there is variation, you can see a pattern of scale. Let's reduce the clutter:

bd553cc701437e956894525ddd7540ce.jpg?v=240000
Four good, representative samples. LEFT TO RIGHT: 1/48th, SWM (presumed 1/52d), cantina fellow, 1/72d.
We can see that SWM is actually MUCH closer to 1/48th scale than it is to 1/72d scale! In fact, jumbo SWM like Roan Fel, Darth Sion and Old Republic Commander ARE 1/48th scale. The cantina lad? As might be expected from Star Wars models, who knows what the hell scale they are. Sheesh.

7e40ec39f90ac1d3392b3443a74873b8.jpg?v=240000
Now here we add the floorplate from my Code 3 gunship. You need to look at the guy in back; he's a wee bit more than 1/72d and actually is the closest match to the cantina Boba.

This site states the Code 3 Gunship is 1/58th scale. Mmm, I can buy that. At that scale, it has a 12" span and 9" length, which jives with my measurements (I did NOT include guns in the length).
www.collectorsgalleryonline.com/Merchant...

This means that a SWM scale gunship would have closer to the dimensions Darth Vaughn suggests, though (again, discounting guns) the span is greater than the length and I would amend it to more like 14".
The 1/72d Revell gunship that was the original topic of conversation probably has a span of, oh, 10.5" or so.

But anyway. I think this is the Final Answer on SWM scale, and how it compares to regular model scales. I'm going with... 34/35mm or 1/52d scale.

Wow. For the first time ever I think I'm gonna call you all out wrong!

Good data is good data. If you put something useful in a thread and for about a month or so people continue to comment on it, then it stays topical. But that doesn't change the data. It's still good and it's still useful. As soon as someone goes asking for that data, no matter how old and buried, it becomes topical again.

Before Wizards murdered my sig, it had great info in it. The most important was a link to Wookieepedia. Heck, it doesn't take that long to open a tab for Wookieepedia and look up Chewbacca so that one knows Wookiee has two "e"s!

If I don't look at Wookieepedia or post at Wookieepedia (I never have, though.) then the site better not disappear!!

Have I made my point? Or do I need to continue and call your point of view silly, stupid or uniformed to clearly make my point?
Nah.
I had so much fun with the Scales thing that I was thinking of making an all-encompassing, expanded version of it from like 1/144th scale to 120 mm and putting it in my sig. Not sure how I'd do it, though. Word document with pictures? A new thread that I just provided a link for?
Also thinking of adding the Leif Ericson thread as a link. Maybe the Awesome Powers of Umlaut will see fit to sticky the scales or something.
Now please stop the abuse!! Laughing

That looks pretty good. I don't play many scenarios or large games, but I can see the LAAT being of use in those. Maybe I will get one or two.
And I'm seeing a way I may be able to justify getting this model: unlike all other representations, this LAAT completely seals. All other models (and I think toys) have open doors and a partially open bay. Therefore, this one is DIFFERENT (shriek of mad glee) and therefore may have to find it's way to my collection after all!!
I kinda was wanting to mod it with some nose-art decals, anyway.

EDIT: Except now I see that after advertising this to all my SWM buddies, now I can't get one. Squadron's out of stock right now!! Yell

So, I did a little more math.  A 72 inch man would be 1.38 inches in 1/52 scale.  34mm is 1.34 inches.  I think I'm satisfied with the conclusion, too.

not nearly as bad as axis and allies mini (the early sets 1-5)15mm/ 1/00  where the vehicle were 150th scale

as soon as i see some sugested stats i'll probly make a run for them

are any of the other models close to the 1/72 scale that could fill what wizards missed?
The two I ordered are on the way. Now, for stats........
The two I ordered are on the way. Now, for stats........

Whenever I made mods for Clix or Minis, I did it just for the sake of how things looked on the map. When it came to stats, I just found another piece produced by the company with stats that worked and then used that. It cut down on any contention over whether or not the point calculator worked and I could use my pieces in tournament play unless there was some uber competitive guy who wouldn't allow me to do it.

With that in mind, why not the Skiff?

It's Fringe, so it can be on a Republic team. It can pick up and drop off figures and when figures are loaded onto it, they can attack from it.

Whaddaya think?

This is plundered directly from the excellent Starship Modeler resource site. They have sections on scales for both Star Wars and Star Trek. It is NOT exhaustive (though it may look like it!), missing some of the newest stuff (F-Toys comes to mind), but is extremely useful.

Wow. That's some great INFO. And a great link to a great site. Too bad there isn't a LINK in someone's SIG or anything.

No. The abuse will not abate!

Seriously, though; thanks. That site is cool.
LMAO
Okay, okay I'll get around to it.
Honestly, I just hate sigs with all kinds of links. I think they're often kinda presumptuous. But I can see a few that would do everyone good.
EDIT: Okay, there's the first three... but why didn't they become clickable links? I did it on Preferences at the top of the page.
EDIT 2: I suppose I'd be in violation of the COC if I linked several pure internet shops, wouldn't I?

The link thing didn't work because you're OLD. Don't cry. Things don't work for me for the same reason. I can't see why they didn't work. Remember Basilisk89? He used to help me when I couldn't do stuff like this. Under his direction, I'd do the SAME DAMN THING I did before, and it would work. Why? He's not out of High School and we are OLD.

I had links for Auggies and another Minis dealer that was close by me (and distantly related by Notmarriage) and WotC never said a thing. I think you can't start threads or make posts for the specific purpose of advert, but links in sigs are okay.

'Sides, what are they gonna do? Ban you? It's not like you're running around calling other people names, belittling their worth and insulting them at every turn. Wait. Even THAT won't get you banned for long.
So, I must go to bed now and cry on my pillow because I'm old and still after three days no one will tell me how to make a link work?

I knew how to do it before WotC became MyPage and they nuked my sig.

Do you cry on a HUGE pilla'?
It's an average pillow. I suppose I could cry on my wife, if I was snivelling real bad, but that'd wake her up.
Of course, in approximately two weeks it will all be a moot point. MotF will be out - hell, the set's been fully spoiled now - and WotC will have lived out it's usefulness. Then it'll be Sayonara. So I guess making functional links doesn't really matter.
