My NPC statblocks, 4e style (extended and self-contained); download & PEACH

I’m going to post a link to a pdf file of nearly 200 NPC’s I’ve made. They are displayed in the style of D&D 4e, which is simple, sexy, and easy-to-read. The statblocks are extended and self-contained, that is, brief explanations of every feat and talent are included so there is no need for the GM to memorize or go searching through 14 books to see what does what. Feats and talents and powers that can be combined together are explained how to use. Feats and talents have been scoured and combined from all 14 books to create these powerful NPC's.

New Version 8.0 is ready for download! With a ton of new NPC's, awesome images and pics, new encounter running tips, and encounter boxes to keep track of encounter abilities used during an encounter! All to make life easier for the GM!

Download my NPC Statblocks!

You can also download the original Word document. Update: The Word document now contains pictures just like the pdf document.

Also included:
-Advice on running combat encounters
-List of NPC’s sorted by CL
-Links to other excellent Saga Edition resources for GM’s and players alike.

I think they may take up too much space but as a whole they aren't too bad.

I don't know that I like seeing the CL 15 Sith Lord portrayed as a lackey which you seem to be doing.  If you are looking for another basic unit to put down I'd suggest you basic CL 6 "Sniper" build of NH4/Scout3/BH1/Gun1 who uses Hunter's Mark and Debilitating Shot along with aiming.

If you are trying to make these reference free writeups you should probably note the basic XP award for each character as well.

Thanks. I tried to trim them as best I could so they could be "reference-free."

I don't know that I like seeing the CL 15 Sith Lord portrayed as a lackey which you seem to be doing.

I was just using him as an example of what a high-level force-user with multiple powers would look like in my 4e-style. However, he could be a henchman or bodyguard for a CL 20 Sith Lord. Or, you could also use him as a mini-boss on his own or something.

If you are looking for another basic unit to put down I'd suggest you basic CL 6 "Sniper" build of NH4/Scout3/BH1/Gun1 who uses Hunter's Mark and Debilitating Shot along with aiming.

I'll look into it. I have quite a number of NPC's that I want to convert to this 4e style. Some of them are from the NPC-Encounter Request thread in my sig.

If you are trying to make these reference free writeups you should probably note the basic XP award for each character as well.

I could do that. Or I could include a copy of the XP table in the CR pg. 248.

You might be working to hard? It's a shame I'll be putting my game aside for a few years, soon.

Prom
Very cool stuff. Are these homebrew NPC stats? Or are you pulling from existing sources?
Very cool stuff. Are these homebrew NPC stats? Or are you pulling from existing sources?

Actually, a little of both. I begin creating a generic NPC by looking at the original stats from the books. Then, using those stats as a guideline, I build the NPC from scratch. Other NPCs I have made from total scratch, such as the ones from my encounter/request thread.

I feel that the NPCs from the books are poorly built. They only use feats and talents from 2 books, and there's no explanation on how to use them. On the other hand, I look at all the feats and talents from all 13 Saga books and see which ones can be combined together. Not only do I maximize their effectiveness, but I explain briefly how the feats and talents work in combat.

The tricky part is trimming down the statblocks to the fewest entries possible. This way, the average GM can quickly scan through their abilities, then play them in a combat encounter smoothly. In the D&D 4e Monster Manual, even level 15 NPC's generally have only 3-4 attack options. It's a challenge to keep my NPC attack options to that few entries, especially the way Saga is designed (with tons of talents, feats, powers, etc).

I tried to simplify the attack options as much as possible, but I'm wondering if I should delete even more. For ex, are Stormtroopers really going to use their knives? Only if they get disarmed. Maybe I should put the Knife attack in the "Possessions" entry at the bottom rather than an attack option.

To simplify even more, I deleted most of the skill entries except "combat-useful" skills like Perception, Initiative, and Stealth. These skills are the only ones with common combat applications. I know other skills have some combat applications, like Deception to feint, but most NPC's won't be wasting a standard action to do that.

Finally, I tried to make generic NPCs that are used as common enemies to accomodate any period. I'm curious to know if anyone used this format in their RPG and how it went. Also, I'd like to know what other generic NPC's I could include.

Dude! Very beautiful presentation! This document is very practical and usefull for GMs. I think all the trained skills are interesting (even those which are not used for the combat for itself).

I am impatient to see more NPC' S. Thank you for the work from which you makes us profit. Your characters are varied and allow to animate the play. Do not forget to add the other characters whom you already carried out! Do you have bad quarrens scoundrels (CL1 or2) and a gran bodyguard (CL2) in stock? ;)

Thank you. My purpose was to combine appealing presentation with practical use.

This is just details, but I have been thinking about the skills I should display in the statblock. So far, I deleted all the untrained skills except Initiative, Stealth, and Perception.

On the one hand, I want to keep the statblocks as trim as possible, without useless clutter. On the other hand, I want them to be a quick-reference for the GM in combat. So far, the only skills that are "combat relevant" are Initiative, Stealth, and Perception. I always include any of the trained skills in the statblocks. But what's the point of including untrained skills such as Knowledge, Mechanics, Deception, Persuasion, Treat Injury, etc? If the GM really needs to know a particular skill mod, he could simply add 1/2 level + ability mod. It may take about 10 seconds.

Then again, maybe I'll reconsider keeping the list of all skills in the statblock. Hmm....

Any opinions about this?

I enjoyed these when you posted them on ENWorld. Version 3.0 is even better.

Do you have the Word document or other template you used for the .pdf source? I would appreciate having that even more than the PDF.  Please and thank-you.

I enjoyed these when you posted them on ENWorld.

Huh? I've never posted anything on ENWorld. If my files are there, that means someone put them there without my knowledge or permission. Either that or you have me confused with another guy who also made a 4e-style statblock.

Version 3.0 is even better.

Thanks, I appreciate your feedback. I haven't gotten much feedback at all. I wish I had more feedback.

Yes, I have the original Word document. I share the pdf version instead. I've noticed that, if you don't have the same fonts that I do, the formatting in the Word document screws up. Also, depending on your version of Word, the columns and page breaks will also be messed up. Whereas the pdf version is optimized for perfect viewing every time.

I uploaded the Word document. Click on the link in my first post, and then click on the folder "Original Word document."

May I ask: Why do you want the Word document?

I had thought these were the same statblocks as were attached to the below post on EnWorld. I may be wrong and they are simply very similar given they both use the 4E style statblock style as a template. Post I was referring to is located here:

www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discus...

I wanted the Word template simply for generating NPCs and Beasts of my own, using the same format. No great mystery to it.

From time to time I may wish to alter a NPC statblock for use in my campaign as well - and it's easier to do so with the original Word .doc to work from, that's all

And if you have never posted anything on ENWord before? Might I suggest that you do so? It is the largest RPG fansite on the internet for a reason you know   Come on over!

Depends on how you define largest, I guess:

That's not me. That's another person who also experimented with 4e statblocks. He only did a couple NPC's. My file has a lot more.

I wanted the Word template simply for generating NPCs and Beasts of my own, using the same format. No great mystery to it.

This is how I do it: I create the NPC with Kenad's Excel Sagasheet generator (in my sig). Then I copy the statblock from Sagasheet to Word (I use Word 2003). Then I rearrange the attack options and put them where the Melee/Ranged entries usually are. Then I describe how the talents and feats work with the attacks. If the NPC has special defensive reactions, I place them above the attack entries. If the NPC has an ability that affects one of his Defenses, I place a note next to that particular Defense.

I apply the feats and talents to the attacks if they work together. I try to create NPC's whose talents, feats, and powers that can be used together. That way, I can put them all in 1 attack entry. That makes it much easier for the GM to select an attack option.

Here’s an example of an NPC with Careful Shot, Deadeye, Precise Shot, Steadying Position, and Point Blank Shot feats. I can combine all the feats into 1 single attack entry:

Ranged ~ Careful Shot, Deadeye, Precise Shot, Steadying Position (2 swift + standard)
Must be prone. Heavy blaster rifle +11 (4d10+1); ignore target’s Dex to Ref; ignore target’s cover bonus to Ref; ignore -5 penalty for shooting into melee. Opponents making ranged attacks against you when you’re prone take a -5 attack penalty; opponents making melee attacks against you when you’re prone get a +5 bonus.
NOTE: all blaster rifle attack entries include Point Blank Shot (+1 attack and +1 damage within 30sq)

I use the following attack power guidelines for the attack entries:

Attack power guidelines:
Ranged/Melee (-Area) ~ Talent / Feat (action; trigger; effect type; uses)
Reach, range, limitation, or target(s). Attack bonus or skill check vs target defense. Effect on success in equaling or exceeding target defense or DC. Miss effect (if any). Secondary attack or effect. Other notes.

Key:
Ranged-Area or Melee-area = area attack
Force power (2) = always in italics (number of uses in parenthesis)
Talent / Feat = talents and/or feats that are included with this attack
Action = standard/move/swift/free/full-round action
Trigger = ex: when you make an attack of opportunity
Effect type = mind-affecting/fear effect
Uses = ex: once per encounter

Once this is done, I the select all of the statblock text. Then I go to Table > Convert Text to Table (use paragraph marks as the separator). Then I remove all borders and add shading. I use 12.5% grey for light shading; 25% grey for dark shading.

From time to time I may wish to alter a NPC statblock for use in my campaign as well - and it's easier to do so with the original Word .doc to work from, that's all

Hopefully, my notes will help.

And if you have never posted anything on ENWord before? Might I suggest that you do so? It is the largest RPG fansite on the internet for a reason you know   Come on over!

I may check it out.

Looking forward to the new version of the statblocks.  We are starting a new campaign in a few weeks, and I expect these will see some serious use in my group.  Thanks for the attractive, and well-thought out stat blocks.  I also love being able to print out just what I need rather than tabbing all my books, etc.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad to hear you're going to use them. I know how frustrating it is to see a statblock in a book, with a list of feats and talents I don't know how to use. Then I have to sort through the books to find them. Then I have to figure out what's the best way to use them together. (As if combat encounters weren't complicated enough!) I've seen my GM get flustered on many occasions.

The whole point of my statblocks is to make combat for the GM as smooth as possible. Let me know how it goes.

Also, most of the statblocks in any given book will have only feats and talents from that book and the Core Rulebook. That's only 2 books. On the other hand, I look at all the feats and talents from all 13 books. The possibilities of awesome feat-talent combinations are nearly endless! Not to mention species, force powers, equipment, and special weapons and armor. There's so much potential for awesome NPC's that we've barely scratched the surface!

Superb!

I don't see the trained skills for

These NPC's were from the time I was trying to list as few entries as possible.

Anyway, for the NPC's you mentioned, the trained skills are either Initiative or Perception or both. Initiative and Perception are listed at the top of the statblock, so I didn't enter them again in the Skills section.

First of all, thanks for putting in all the work to create these, Richter. I'm a 4E as well as Saga player, and I love what you've done here.

My only suggestion would be to ask if you could make this data available in a form other than PDF. I request this because I like to print out my creature stat blocks prior to a game session. I'll print off just the ones I need, onto blank sheets of printer paper. The PDF document you have posted doesn't allow me to copy text (or I'm not sure how to do so properly), and so I can't really use these stat blocks in the way that I would like to.

Is there possibly an alternative way to make this information available, so that I could copy the creatures out and print just a few selected ones onto a single sheet for in-game use?

Thank you again for this. You clearly worked hard on these, and it is greatly aprpeciated.

On adobe reader they have a funtion that lets you take a "snap shot" of the text. Then you can open up a blank word doc. and paste it to word (or you can use open office instead). That way you can print out what you want.

Hope this helps,
Kamal

Thanks for the positive feedback. This project has been time-consuming but fun.

As for your suggestion: When you click on my link and go to the Mediafire website, click on the folder that says, "Original Word Document" to download the Word version of the pdf file. I prepared that document for that reason. The fonts and formatting may be a little off if you don't have the Technomage and Candara fonts. But it should still fulfill your printing needs. Let me know if it works for you.

Alternatively, you can use sir_kamal's suggestion above of copy and paste.

Thank you both!

When I try to download the Word version, the website tries to force me to buy a MediaPro account, and it will not let me download the file unless I do.

Also, I don't use Adobe reader for PDFs. Do you by any chance know if Foxit Reader has that same feature?

I was able to downlod the Word versions w/out any difficulty using Firefox.  Maybe try it again?  I could also email them to you, if you want, just PM an email address.

Man, that stinks for both of us. Can you try it again and let me know? I'd like to fix it if it's a problem.

Still no luck D/Ling the folder. It's probably some setting on my computer that's causing that.

Anyway, I did find Foxit's text copy feature, so that's good.

I was thinking, Richter... this idea of yours reminds me of how I used to handle doing stat blocks when I was running Saga. I made up blocks a lot like yours, and then I printed them onto the Avery 8387 matte white post cards. The beauty of that was, I could print on both sides of the card, which was the only way to really accomodate some of the longer stat blocks. I would make a page of "fronts" and then a page of "backs" and just flip the card page over and stick it back in the printer.

It'd be cool to see all these stat blocks done that way, though it would require a lot of work, and you've already done a lot of work. If you decide to revisit these blocks one day and look for another way to format them, that would be one possible course to take. It worked out well for me. I stored my cards in a big deck, sorted alphabetically, and just drew the ones I needed for a given encounter and laid them out in front of me.

The product I'm referring to is this:

Ok, I know what you're doing wrong. You are trying to "bulk-download" the "Original Word document" folder. When you are in the main folder, you are clicking on wrong button; you are clicking on the "Download" button, which is "bulk-download" (if you let your mouse hover over the button, a text box will appear saying "Bulk-download this folder.") If you click on that, you get a "You can't bulk-download unless you upgrade to Media Pro." You're clicking on the wrong button.

What you need to do is click on the blue "Original Word document" text or click on the image of the folder. Do NOT click the "Download" button on the right. It will then open that folder, revealing the .doc file.

Anyway, if you still can't get it, here is the link to that folder:

I don't think I'll reformat the statblocks to fit on postcards. I think using regular paper is just as good. Besides, even the long statblocks fit on one sheet of paper; you don't need to flip it over. You can still lay out all your statblocks in front of you with regular paper.

Several NPCs in v6.0 have the Rapport feat without the necessary Wisdom 13+.

I checked the original text in Force Unleashed page 34. It doesn't say you need WIS 13+ to qualify for the Rapport feat, nor is there any mention of it in the officical errata. There are no prerequisites at all for Rapport.

You had me flummoxed for a moment! It's there, just not in all the places it should be. The table with the feat summaries on p. 32 contains the Wis 13+ prereq, the write-up of the feat doesn't. I guess it's debatable on whether you consider the table binding or not, what with there being some instances in Saga of the feat text contradicting (and over-ruling) the table summaries.

Yes, I see it now. I remember reading somewhere that text trumps tables, since there are many errors in the tables. Anyway, I'm deciding to take the text as RAW rather than tables.

If you see any other glaring errors in my statblocks, please let me know. I'm also open to any cool feat-talent combos or interesting archetypes.
