Rules for "throw-away" characters

That thread about high level characters got me thinking.

Lets take a hypothetical situation:

There are 8 players that want to play DnD at the local gaming store.

There are 2 judges.

3 people have a 4-7 character, (all level 5-7).

5 people have a 1-4 character, (all level 1-3).

The obvious solution here would be to have one person from the 1-4 table play a "throw away" character with the 4-7's, enabling both to play.

However, most people really dont want to do this, as it doesn't benefit them in any way.

Hence this suggestion/idea:

If a situation like this were to occur, that level 1-4 person that is playing a throw away level 4-7, should get the experience and reward as if he played the 1-4 mod.

Obviously this shouldn't happen often, but I think it would be fair.

Clearly the much better solution is to tell one person with a 4-7 character to roll up a new 1-4 character, and to tell the other three people from the 4-7 table to go stand in seperate corners and think about what they've done.Foot in mouth
The bottom line is that if possible, everyone should get to play. There's nothing worse than coming to a gameday and leaving without getting to play because you couldn't make a table work out... except maybe sending home the judge who spent all that time prepping.

In your scenario, the best legal solution is to ask all 8 players to play H1 modules (if the players with 4-7 PCs don't have H1 PCs, they can make new ones). Hopefully, the judge for the H2 adventure is familiar enough with another adventure that he can run it on the fly (or maybe one of the players would be willing to swap with him).

Other solutions do exist, but they're not exactly legal.

Most people don't want to do that because the rules don't let you do that.  If you don't have a table of four legal characters for that level, you don't get to play.

This example is trivial, because the answer here is "Everyone plays the L1-4 module, rolling up new characters if necessary."  If you want a more difficult situation, change it to 5 5th-6th level characters and 3 8th-10th level ones, where all of the latter three players might not have legal L4-7 PCs.

But, unfortunately, the real answer is "Sometimes, if you're ahead of the rest of your gaming group, you don't get to play your primary character until the rest of the group catches up with you."
The strictly legal suggestion is have all 8 players play level 1-4 at two tables. The GM at the H2 table is probably capable of running something at H1 without too much trouble.

Everything else that you bend in the all too bendy rules, is between you, your players and the wall.

It's highly likely that the H2 judge can run an H1 adventure that is "new" for one of the sets of 4 players.  (They wouldn't have to run the scheduled mod cold.)

Note also that the H2 players are helping themselves, because the 3rd level character will be catching up to 4th level - - H2 the following game day!

(They'll also have a nice back-up character the next time they can't muster a top-tier table and need to play H1.)

The ideal situation is that there is time and availability for the H2 players to create level 1 characters and even the playing field, but that's not always the case. So while it may suck, the H2 players and 1 H2 DM would sadly just have to leave and wait until the level 3 characters level up into the band.

I should know, I've been in that situation.
