Counterspell

I was just curious everyone opinion on counterspell do you think they should bring it back or keep it outta standard because it's to good

personally i think blue really needs it with red getting lightning bolt, white having paths, black having doom blades/hidious ends/deathmarks/terminates ,and green having giant growths and primal bellows not to mention fogs
i think its more along the lines of green having great sable stag....

but i digress, i've been wanting counterspell or a reasonable substitute reprinted in worldwake for months now.  i think blue is getting some more decent cards, but we shall see

i would love to see some CS that doesn't suck. tho ATM i don't really think a 1for1 just for the sake of tempo would matter that much as cancel doesn't see play, and with jund being 60% of the meta, flashfreeze doesn't see play either.

it might matter in extended, but i doubt it.

they could safely bring back CS in m11 then rotate it in m12 if it warps the meta.

and that's what i'm loving about the new rotation schedule.
magic is closely related to an MMO. not the same but it shares some charicteristics. rotation is like the next expansion for WoW. there's more levels and suddenly you're not the god you once were. you can't build one deck and have all the power. you need to keep up to the new boss, or kill him in one fell stroke. keep finding the better equiptment, the epic mount, the best spells. and we get to do it with our friends.

that was the one thing i always loved about blue. it wasn't about dominating the board. it was about control, and that one solid finisher going all the way.
if lightning bolt, terminate, and path to exile aren't too powerful to be printed, then the same is true of counterspell.

I'd rather have mana leak right now, it's more splashable.

i agree, as double blue feels like a stretch right now

People would complain a lot if Counterspell was reprinted, regardless of whether or not it's "too powerful" in the Standard environment.
A good aggro card is powerful, whilst a good control card is overpowered.
Counterspell is far too powerful. And with Wizards apparent desire to draw in newer players to the game, they won't want to put them through the hell that is having their Hellkite Overlord or Progenitus countered for 2 mana.
i think 3 mana wouldn't make a difference to new players... they'd still bit@h

I wouldn't complain. I would be more happy that everyone else stopped complaining. Personally, I'm indifferent to whether Counterspell itself gets reprinted or not. Does blue need some better countermagic? Signs point to yes. Especially now, I guess, since blue is so out of the picture that a card that turns a land into an Island is crippling to the owner of the land.
But, is it only countermagic that it needs? I don't know.

Path has a drawback. You must also consider that Path is white. A color that doesn't often create an overwhelming/oppressive environment for the opponent through constant denial and card advantage.

Path (and all your other example) also allow(s) creatures to come into play, giving the newer players that feeling that they are actually doing something to try and beat the opponent instead of just having every spell fizzle.

There's a visceral excitement when something big like Progenitus/Godsire/Hellkite Overlord/Darksteel Colossus come down and loom over the field, even if it's just for a second until it gets PtE'd.

Counterspell on the other hand, has no such excitement.

I think you are getting a little too deep into the psychoanalysis of creating a card...

Path and other removal spells are cheap because WotC has been shifting a TON of effects onto creatures in the form of "when X enters the battlefield, Y effect occurs". This allows them to keep countermagic weak, while still allowing control to have generic answers.

Reprints of cards like counterspell also have a negative effect on combo decks, an archetype that is already on weak ground. I think WotC is honestly pleased withthe fact that true combo decks require elements of control, and control decks require elements of beatdown, and even the fastest aggro deck in the meta runs stuff like manabarbs, chandra, and baneslayer angels in the sideboard.

Lord_Zed: I was at my friends house when this happened. He's married and his wife was an excellent baker. She had baked a homemade apple pie the night before. I was hungry, and my friend convinced me to try those low carb monster drinks. Before this day, I had never triend energy drinks before. Boy was I in for a treat. When I tried that first monster, I really enjoyed the flavor, but the taste that it left in my mouth wasn't so good. What was my solution? Drink another! before I could finish drinking that 2nd monster, I felt it already kicking in(these drinks were not very far apart, we're talking minutes here) my friend decided that it was a good idea to whip out that fresh pie his wife made the night before. I didn't know what to do, since I felt incredibly invigorated, and at the same time, freaked out by the rush I was feeling, but I was also hungry, and my friend have me an entire plate with a fork and said "help yourself." He extended his saucer to me, and I cut him a piece of the pie and handed it to him, then I looked at the pie, noticed that the pie was in an aluminum holder, and dumped the entire pie onto my plate and started eating it with 2 forks. I don't know where I found that other fork, it probably came from my friend. Anyhow, his wife wasn't happy, and I was already in magical christmas land. 2 days later, I was in my friends bed and I slept for 14 hours. His wife outlawed my from having any of her baked goods for a while(which sucked because I could just show up at there house, steal some sweets, and leave) and said I couldn't have any energy drinks at her house, unless under close watch. My friend, on the other hand, had to take me out to a steak dinner, because apparently I won a bet where I climbed a tree and didn't die.

As far as being too powerful, I think it would be fine.  I honestly think Essence Scatter and Flashfreeze may be better in the current meta, getting UU isn't all that reliable in 3-color control decks.  For 2-color, yeah, Counterspell would be better, but not all that much.

Nothing can stop Fluffy's march to victory, spreading the sweet smell of strawberries where ever it lays its mighty paw. I think that Cancel is underpowered for its cost while Counterspell is overpowered for its cost. So I think the obvious solution to to print a kicker style counterspell. For example:

Fizzle - Instant - UU
Kicker - 2
Counter target spell with a converted mana cost of 3 or less. If the kicker was paid you may counter target spell with a converted mana cost of 4 or more.

Although from what I've heard there will already be a spell like this printed, not sure on the specifics though.
Counterspell is far too powerful. And with Wizards apparent desire to draw in newer players to the game, they won't want to put them through the hell that is having their Hellkite Overlord or Progenitus countered for 2 mana.

but thats just it path gets rid of both those for 1 not even 2 isnt that even worse n black can get rid of them also for 2 green can over power with primal below i just dont see your point

I don't get his point either. How can removal that can only be effective the turn the creature is brought into play for two blue be better than removal that can be used at anytime after resolution for one white? Sure, Counter Spell negates "come into play effects" but is that too good of an effect for only two blue mana? Not when you consider that there is really super cheap removal like PTE. If Path to Exile is alowed to exist (which is a mistake in my opinion) than so should Counter Spell.

Sure, Counter Spell has more versatility (it can counter not creature spells), but its 2 blue mana specificaly. If it were 1U I would understand, but not at uu. At that cost it doesn't seem overpowerd at all.

While I am indifferent to the reprinting of Counterspell, I must say that Path to Exile is not as stellar as you are making it out to be.
It's good, yes. But it's a far cry a "mistake" to allow it to exist.

Yes, maybe that was an exageration, but still... It seems like white is getting a very large piece of the color pie. Lets not forget. It exiles, and prevents any "graveyard" effects. For one mana at instant speed its almost a little too good. Even if it does accelerate your opponents mana. It also says...

i hate getting my spells countered. i love countering spells. where is the balance? UU is too little 1UU is too much.
who is the target audiance for counterspell? it's not the kitchen tablers. if they want it, they still use it. if they don't want to play against it, they make house rules that it's banned (OMG teh counterspellz banhammah!)

counterspell is for spike. (force spike is for spike) it's a time honoured tradition that the top tables play blue (and white, black, red, and green) and counterspell has a long history as a thing you can do to spells in magic. you can't counterspell a creature.

wizards is not printing teh counterspellz because it makes timmy sad when he can't  cast his creatures. when that same creature dies to path, timmy get's a consolation land. if counterspell were balanced in a similar way, would it be better? would timmy stop crying? would anyone play it?

I don't think it matters, people still won't be happy. Spell Pierce is amazing and a great 2 drop spell is on the way with WWK...and I still fully expect people to whine.  The fact is that Blue is just fine right now, it's just not easy mode so (most) people don't use it.  Control is a very skill intensive archetype and people just aren't happy having to try so hard.

This I agree with wholeheartedly.  I've been using control to moderate success for a long time now, but no one seems to believe that it's good enough.  Spell Pierce, Negate, Essence Scatter, and Flashfreeze are sufficient countering options, in my opinion.  However, like I said, I don't think Counterspell would really hurt the metagame all that much.

About Path:  My personal beef with it is that it is pretty much the best removal spell in the format.  In white.  White is not supposed to be the best color at removing threats.

Nothing is more terrible than the sun glittering on its teeth, save perhaps the light glancing off the oily tones of the sequins that cover its hotpants. Of course, there was that child who tried to eat Fluffy, mistaking him for a giant, walking piece of cotton candy. That child... is now the almighty leader of Fluffy, controlling his every move, sending him to devour the people that cross his path. And Keeper. Because we said so. Nothing can stop Fluffy's march to victory, spreading the sweet smell of strawberries where ever it lays its mighty paw. Followed by many jolly fairies singing joyful songs about Fluffy's cuddlyness, the baloth wanders the mountains of Zendikarland on a quest to share the love with Keeper, tough love that is...
Fluffy, we'll miss you friend. We'll miss you...

We were goddamn slowly making our way towards those **** mountains. The road was all filthy and wet, bird **** on every step and eldrazi piss raining from the sky. "So those ****tards are finally awake huh?" my idiotic companion asked. "Yep, we're in deep ****, homie." "Wazzup?" "Nothing, just pissed." My companion looked to the sky. A drop of the eldrazi urine fell right in his eye. "Oh, man. Now I'm pissed too." As we were moving on, we were looking around on the innocent nature. Two baloths were doing it on the road so we had to make a little detour. The pools of piss were kinda unpleasant but at least it was warm so we had no trouble at night. "One gets used to piss running down your face you know." said my companion. "F'shizzle." answered I stoicly and kicked two rabbits, who were doing nasty things to each other's ass, in the ass. "Man one can't take a spit here without hitting some shamming animals." "Word. Zendikar sucks. Hope the eldrazi contribute a little to the population regulation." As my companion said that, a gigantic, 20 meters tall eldrazi slithered by. On it's arms and tentacles were remains of birds, rabbits, baloths, angels, planeswalkers, dragons, krakens and a few cities. We stood up and clapped loudly. "A few bitches less." Am I the only one? Looking over the recent threads debating the merits of "Belgium," the various ideas to "fix" England and other topics which concern European nations, I'm struck by how much I don't care what happens. Britain and Spain are, to me, completely inaccessible due to the Atlantic Ocean, not to mention volcanoes and socialism. I sound like I'm bashing European nations, and I guess I kind of am. If you enjoy living in France, Luxembourg, Poland or any other, older nation, that's fantastic. I just don't see why there's such a huge uproar about a volcano that is mostly affecting a niche group of people.

I'm real happy for you, and I'mma let you finish, but pillarfield ox has one of the best pieces of art of all time. Of all time.
Really? I don't really see the greatness.
It's an Ox. In a PILLARFIELD. That's like, a field of frickin' PILLARS, but to this Ox it just looks like an ordinary field of grass - because he is so BADASS.

Finally, Master Yumyums just had probably the most boring, worthless card in the entire contest. Why would you need to give creatures -1/-0 on your turn? To beat them down with your nonflying blue aggro deck that plays a bad win condition card to win (and if you are playing the critters, why aren't you winning with them?!)? And the win condition itself is so mindblowingly difficult it seems like it was only made simply to fit the criteria.

exile target spell, it's controller get's a basic land into play taped.

i don't know but i hope we get a good 2drop CS soon.

Except that's not actually a counterspell, it gets stuff like Banefire, Volcanic Fallout, etc.  I'd definitely run it for spells like that, but if it just countered the spell, probably not.
The end is always nigh.

Thank you!

About Path:  My personal beef with it is that it is pretty much the best removal spell in the format.  In white.  White is not supposed to be the best color at removing threats.

Actually, assuming you acept the conditions, White generally does have the best spot removal.  The problem with path is simply the lack of the traditional "attack and/or Blocker" condition.

*shrug*

I'm okay with Path to be honest, the combo of Harm's Way/Journey/O-Ring/Purge to support it is worrisome though.

As Creature-oriented as this environment is, I still think a well timed counterspell is always better than a Path to Exile that just gets chucked out there.

Cept it's not. Well-timed means you have to leave mana open. path to Exile means "i don't care WHAT you throw out there, cause its going away when i untap".

Secondly, exile effects > countermagic in the land of recurring creatures. Some kid though he was God's gift to magic when he countered my Ob Nix from coming into play. next turn I used Grim Discovery to bring him and a fetch back, and simply smiled at his gaping face.

Spread 'Em is control on auto-pilot... it's not as brain dead as Jund, but it's close.... It's just so fun though!

If Path to Exile is alowed to exist (which is a mistake in my opinion) than so should Counter Spell.

NO UNEARTH FOR YOU, NO GRAVEYARD ANTICTS FOR YOU, NO OPEN THE VAULTS FOR YOU, AND NO MORE LANDFALL BLOODGHAST FOR YOU!!!!

Something that Counterspell just doesn't do.

Oh noes, white hosing black!

Anyone read todays article about how weak blue is? That guy clearly doesn't know what he's talking about, it's one of the worst articles I've seen on MTG.com for a while.

I read the article, and while I disagree with parts of it, he made his case well. Though, if you have feedback on the article there was indeed a link to comment.

I actually have said because, control is not weak. PERMISSION is weak. He did speak to the interesting design dilemma. How do you build a game and keep it fun for everyone?

There are blue inclusive control decks, but they had to adjust for the meta, and actually don't run anywhere near the blue content or quality that 5-color control (with it's 8 GOOD main deck permission spells) had.
