Seraphim - A Magic Online Clan
Last Updated: 11/12/11

Be sure to visit our website!

Seraphim is currently one of the fastest growing and most active clans on Magic Online. We're always looking for active members who want a clan where they can interact with other players, toss around deck ideas, play in clan-sponsored tournaments and events, and generally enjoy the game of Magic with like-minded individuals. We have a lot to offer our members, such as:

  • An active player base to play the game with!

  • New: A clan-owned Cube with the best cards of Magic's History.

  • New: A Player's Club where you can earn points and rewards based on participation and performance in our tournaments and events.

  • Frequent Clan Tournaments and Events

  • Awards, prizes, and trophies for doing well in our events!

  • Month-long League events, complete with special formats and prizes

  • Constructed and Limited Strategy videos recorded by experienced members.

  • Our very own clan Podcast!

  • Fun practice tournaments, to get you in shape for our weekly events!

  • Specialty format tournaments for those who like strange rules and combinations

  • Fun Forum Contests

  • Voice Chat

  • A Mentor Program to show new members the ropes (with free stuff!)

  • A Tournament Center for those players interested in the competitive side of Magic.

  • An interesting organizational structure

  • A clear vision of where we are going

  • Just simply a way to communicate with like-minded folks.

  • Our forums are full of advice relating to issues like deckbuilding and drafting.

  • And finally, just some friends to help you play-test decks and run 2HG with!

That being said, we also require some things from our members:

  1. Firstly, we ask that you join our group on these forums, and participate actively on the forums. You don't have to be an overly enthusiastic poster, unless you want to be, but we do ask that you try to read the forums daily, when possible, and generally make your presence known.

  2. Secondly, we ask that you play and chat with clan members when online. We are an active clan, and we hold clan events weekly, with even more activities on the way.

  3. We also ask that you behave in an acceptable way during your time in the clan. Seraphim members are always polite and friendly, we ask that it stays that way.

Applying

If you are interested in applying, please visit our Recruitment forum, which can be found here. We look forward to hearing from you!

Diplomacy

Are you the leader of a Magic Online Clan, and would like to contact Seraphim? Please create a new thread and introduce yourself (and your organization) here. We would love to hear from you (and possibly organize competitions and events). If you are a smaller clan, and would like to potentially talk about collaborating with Seraphim (or merging), please use the same link (above) or send me a message.

I just wanted to add an update. As stated above our first clan tournament is being held tonight and we have been happily testing out decks and making new ones to prepare for the games. It's been a lot of fun even before the tournament starts and I encourage more people to come along and join us in these events.

We're planning on running more STD, (Zen, alara) Block, 2hg and pauper tournaments in the coming weeks. At the moment these events are for clannies only, as we would like everyone to meet the other clan members and form tighter friendships and use our voice chat system for that.

Our clan is usually always full of online members and we have been playing both constructed and draft games together.

I have been myself staying out of clans completely for a long time now, and I didn't think much of them. After joining Seraphim I have to agree, its worth it.
Seraphim is holding it's second weekly event, a Zendikar Block Tournament. Currently, the tournament is for clan members only.

If you are interested in joining Seraphim, please visit our group here.

Seraphim's Second Weekly Event:

The Zendikar Block Tournament

Format: Zendikar Block

What: The second of Seraphim's "Weekly Events", this tournament will follow the same rules as our previous event and will be a Swiss format.

The rules are as follows:

There will be four Rounds in the tournament (the number of rounds will depend upon participation). Each Round will contain a single Match.

A match consists of three games, and the winner of two out of the three games wins the match.

Player Rankings will be posted once all of the individual Matches in a Round have ended.

A player is awarded a single point for winning a game, and another point for winning a Match. Thus, if you win a Match, you will receive three points.

After the player rankings have been posted, another Round will begin. Pairings will be posted on the forums.

Players will be paired with others who have earned points similar to them. For example, players with three points (the winners of the first match) will be paired with other players with three points.

At the end of the final round, the player with the most points will have won the tournament.

Depending upon when the Final Round ends, there may be a Top 4 showdown.

When: Friday, January 29th at 8:00PM GMT-5 (US Eastern).

The discussion regarding event times can be found here.

Prizes: At the end of the tournament, the points players have accumulated will be entered into a database and saved. Actual in-game prizes will not be awarded for the first several tournaments.

The reason for this is two-fold.

1. It will be important to get everyone accustomed to the idea of weekly tournaments, so that we can eventually have a larger pool of players to draw from.

2. It would perhaps be detrimental to the first goal if there was a requirement to donate cards to a prize pool for our very first event.

Thus, points that you earn during the tournament will be saved, and can be used to collect prizes in the future (more on this later).

If you participated in the previous tournament, the points you gain during our Block Tournament will be added to your total score.

Communication: All players wishing to participate in the tournament should be in-game, at least half an hour prior to its start. Once in-game, please make sure you are actively watching the clan chat for announcements.

If possible, I encourage all members to join the Mumble voice chat server, even if you do not own a microphone. Voice chat makes it vastly easier to relate commands and ask questions. Even if you do not own a microphone, you can still easily listen to other players' comments, as well as hear any announcements that might be made pertaining to the tournament.

If you attended our first tournament, you should know that these forums are absolutely essential to our communication process. Pairings and rankings will be posted in the Tournament Rules thread (which will be linked here as the date approaches). Please make sure you are a member of our group, and can view our forums.

Comments/Concerns: Any comments or concerns should be directed to the thread(s) in the Seraphim Events section of the forums here.

Final Words: This event will be our second such tournament (though this time of a different format). We need to all recognize that, even though our first tournament was a success, we must keep up the tradition, and support the clan's events. I hope to see all of you at our Block tournament.

Until then.

Seraphim has a new website!

Older members might remember some time back a discussion about moving Seraphim to a Wizards-independent web presence, due to certain limitations that have arisen as a result of basing our clan out of the Wizard's Community site. At that time, there did not seem to be a very compelling reason to make the move, primarily because it would cost a considerable amount of provide hosting for our own website, as well as a great deal of time and effort for (perhaps) little return. However, several things have recently changed that make moving to our own website a logical and practical choice. The most important being that one of our clan members offered to host the site for us, thereby reducing the amount of monetary upkeep necessary for our own site, and thus allowing us to overcome a significant hurdle. The other being the "discovery" of several plugins that will allow us to link cards and decks on both the forum and the blog, which was a principal advantage of the Wizard's Community site.

The Solution

With those two issues taken care of, it has become patently obvious that Seraphim could use it's own website. The reasons for this are many. Throughout the clan's life, it has come to the leadership's attention rather frequently that the Wizards' Community site is difficult to navigate, and that the site is generally unorganized. While this may not have affected everyone, it has been mentioned often enough to become a real concern. Because we were forced to work within the existing framework of the Community site, there were also a number of features that we were unable to implement. The chief advantage of our own website is this: we have nearly complete control over what is presented, and in what manner it is presented. Our website, seraphimclan.org, was developed by myself and PlagueDogma based on the framework of Wordpress. This is an open-source software package that allows considerable customization. Because of this, we were allowed to add in several features which we feel should alleviate the problems experienced at our previous location.

New Features

The most important of these considerations being how Seraphim Tournaments are organized and presented. The challenge on our previous site was discovering when a tournament was to be held, and what the format of the tournament was to be. On our new site, this has been addressed. On the right sidebar, you should notice that it contains a list of upcoming events, sorted from those closest to occurring at the top, to those farthest away in terms of time (bottom). It should become a rather simple matter for clan members to quickly glance at this list to know precisely the time of the event, as well as the format. Just above this is a bar labeled "Seraphim Time". All official Seraphim events are based on GMT-5 times, or U.S. Eastern time. If ever uncertain as to the current time in GMT-5, please refer to this clock. It should hopefully prevent confusion regarding time zones, which has previously resulted in some missing clan events due to an error in calculation. It should also be noted that clicking on the title of the event in the right sidebar will take you to the blog post which addresses that event (and contains more information). If that is not enough, there is a link at the top of the page in the main menu called "Events". This page functions similarly to the sidebar, in that it will display events chronologically from fast approaching (top) to more distant (bottom). What this also means is that events for the month will be listed considerably in advance, hopefully allowing clan members to better prepare themselves to attend. There are several other noteworthy items. During one of our Mumble meetings, it was mentioned that Seraphim should have it's own Twitter account, in order to better maintain contact with clan members. Well, that day has come. Seraphim's Twitter account (SeraphimClan) will now be broadcasting important information as it becomes available, namely the posting of news and events. If you are one of those who frequently use Twitter, then be sure to Follow us. In addition, our website also has an RSS feed, which will allow people to subscribe to our site and receive updates as they are made to the site. You might also notice that there is a second menu beneath the main menu. These are categories which sort blog posts made on the main page. These will serve several functions. For instance, if you were to click the link called "Leagues", it will take you to a page which lists all of the blog posts made under the Leagues category. This is where news and events regarding the Leagues may be found, if it is not on the main page of the website. However, the principal importance of this section is that for our next tournament there will be a link called "Results and Pairings". At least once each of our tournaments, there are those who are unable to find where the Results and pairings for the tournament are posted. This should hopefully alleviate this problem. All of the pairings and results for each of our tournaments will be from this page. The topmost blog will be for the most recent tournament.

The Seraphim Community

And one last important thing to note: the forums. If you were a user of our forums at the Wizards' Community site (or simply forums in general), you should find these forums familiar. There are much more customizable, and there are varying degrees of permission settings that should make these much more useful and adaptable than the ones from our previous location. However, there are a few differences that may throw some people off balance. If there is something that you would like to do on the forums that you could do on the previous site, but are unsure how to do so, please do not hesitate to ask! If the issue proves to be common, guides can be written to address particular issues to make the use of these new forums as easy as possible.

Conclusion

This last ideas leads nicely into this conclusion: we need your help to make this site as great as possible. As mentioned above, our new site is almost completely customizable. What this means is that if there is a feature that would make learning about our tournaments and events easier for you, please let us know! In fact, there is a forum section where you can post your Comments and Suggestions. If there is something you would like to see on our site, please don't hesitate to share. That said, this site is brand new, and there may be some issues that were overlooked. If you encounter something of this nature, please be sure to let myself or PlagueDogma know of it, so that it can be addressed. The move to our own site is a big one, but it was also inevitable. Seraphim continues to be the largest and fastest-growing clan on Magic Online, and we intend to stay that way. Thank you everyone for your support, and we hope that you enjoy Seraphim's new home on the internet!

Just wanted to throw out a couple of updates since it's been a while!

In case anyone is still visiting our old group on this community site and are wondering whether we are active, well, wonder no more!

Seraphim continues to be one of the largest and most active clans on Magic Online. We've moved to a new location, which let's us offer a lot more to our members. Be sure to check out the Recruitment forum on our new site if you are interested in joining.

We've also added a few new events to our line-up. Our Weekly Rotation of tournaments includes Standard, Zendikar Block, Classic Pauper, and Build Your Own Standard. In addition, we have Commander tournaments each week. We're also hoping to add several new events in the near future.

One of the other major announcements that should be made is that Seraphim has instituted a Mentor Program. The jist of it is that inexperienced players can request to be assigned an experienced member of Seraphim to act as a Mentor to help them get into the game. In addition, participants in our Mentor Program will received a certain amount of free commons and uncommons, as needed!

If you're interested in finding out more about this program, be sure to check out the appropriate section of our About page.

As always, if anyone has any questions about Seraphim, please do not hesitate to make a post here, or to send me a PM.

Another quick update!

We've just finished out Time Spiral Block League, and we're now moving into Lorwyn. We decided to split the Lorwyn Block over two months, so Round 1.5 of our League will  be Lorwyn/Morningtide, and the following month will be Shadowmoor/Eventide.

We've also been working quite hard setting up a new type of event, what we're calling the Chromatic Championship Series. The premise is to utilize Seraphim's sub-clan system (five different clans within a clan, which each represent a piece of the Magic color pie) to hold tournaments and competitions between factions in the clan.

The format for this new event is 60-card Singleton, and the idea is to create mono-color decks (of the color of your sub-clan) with a possible 8-card splash of a second color. We're just starting to get this program off the ground, and it should be exciting when it matures!

As always, Seraphim is still open for Recruitment. Be sure to check out our website for all of the details (which can be found linked in the main post).

It's been a while since I've posted an update, so I should probably let anyone interested know what's been going on!

We have been continually holding clan tournaments each week, so nothing has changed there. We've got a fairly good spectrum for our monthly rotation, Standard, Block, Classic Pauper, and Build Your Own Standard.

We're also currently in the midst of our Shadowmoor/Eventide league, with Alara Block coming up next month.

However, we've also begun adding a few new things. For starters, several clan members have begun to write articles which we have begun to post up on our website. Seraphim member Merkos has contributed to "Merk's Manual", which is often a bit of a ramble on any and all things Magic.

Another member, Dicax, has recently created a channel on YouTube called the "Newb Tube", where he hopes to make videos to help newer players in the clan more familiar with formats like sealed and Two-Headed Giant.

We're also continually working on getting our Chromatic Championship Series up and running.

So, there are a lot of things going on with Seraphim. If you're interested in finding out more, check out our website!

Just checking in for another Seraphim update!

As always, we're still holding weekly clan tournaments, though we've recently added a new event to our tournament line-up! It's actually a format that the clan has developed, and we're calling it Chromatic. If you're interested in the rules, you can check them out on our site.

Also, a few of our members, myself included, have begun recording our limited and constructed experiences, and posting them as videos on Seraphim's YouTube channel (we also post them on our main website). If you're interested in seeing some Seraphim players in action, be sure to check them out!

And finally, Seraphim now has it's very own podcast (also available on iTunes). Be sure to give it a listen. During our premiere episode, we talk about the clan, some events we have coming up, as well as some topics on Constructed, as well as Scars of Mirrodin strategies. We're planning to release one podcast each week, so stay tuned!

As always, Seraphim is open for recruitment. Be sure to check out our Recruitment forums if you're interested in applying.

How many members are in this clan?
over 100, and we are quite active  :-)

Happy Holidays everyone!
Just a few quick updates:

We're starting our Odyssey Block league this month, and we've added a new event to our weekly line-up: Chromatic Standard Singleton. It's a fun new format that we've developed internally, and so far it's been pretty popular with our members!

Also, and this is big news, we've added a clan Cube. We've got an entire Cube (filled with some pretty awesome cards) that we've been drafting regularly for the past several weeks. The Cube currently has about 418 cards in it (with more added all the time).

As always, we're open for new members, and those interested should check out our website.
98de6927a936e102b1ac9a0de5585ebd.jpg?v=52000
I've been hesitant to bump this post because it seemed a bit unfair, but I would like to ensure everyone that Seraphim is still very much active, and that this recruitment post should reflect this.

In terms of what has changed since my last update: We've nearly completed our clan Cube. The Cube is now 500 cards large, and we've only to replace about 30 cards before it is completely finished, which is very exciting. It's been a long journey in the building of this Cube, and we're finally able to play frequently with the most powerful cards in Magic. The Cube contains cards from all of Magic's illustrious history, and is updated with new cards whenever a set is released.

Another big change to the clan is that we've introduced a Player's Club. Those of you familiar with the SCG Circuit and the Wizards' new system of Planeswalker points should find our Player's Club easy to understand. You earn points and "level up" in the system, which grants certain rewards and access to other events in the clan.

If you have any questions about Seraphim, please feel free to send me a message. Make sure to check our website, which is updated very frequently.
