You Build the Character #2 - Obi-Wan Kenobi

This competition is now closed.

Hi everyone, and welcome back to You Build the Character. This month's challenge is to build Jedi Master and 'crazy old wizard' Obi-Wan Kenobi. You have until midnight (PT) on Friday 20 November to post your RPG stats, and any notes you want to post explaining your decisions. Once submissions have closed, all forum members will have until midnight (PT) on Friday 27 November to vote for their favourite. Whichever build receives the most votes will win.

The prize for winning is having your stats enshrined in the YBtC Hall of Fame, as well as the bragging rights.

The following rules apply to all submissions:

  1. All builds must be created according to RAW, with no house rules (no single Athletics skill, no bonus feats for bloodlines etc).

  2. You may use "unlimited" point buy for Obi-Wan's ability scores, provided each score is between 3 and 18 at first level (before racial and age adjustments).

  3. You are free to use material from all official Saga Edition books, up to and including Galaxy at War.

  4. Your stats may represent Obi-Wan Kenobi at any point during his life, or serve as an overall interpretation of the character as a whole. You may even include multiple stats to represent multiple points in time, provided they are all different level versions of the same build (ie no swapping out talents or feats).

  5. Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Human, and as such uses the Human species traits provided on page 23 of the core rulebook.

  6. You may change your stats at any point up until submissions close, at which point any edited stats will be disqualified.

Have fun everyone, and may the Force be with you. Smile

This build of Obi-Wan focuses on his speed that we see in
The Clone Wars along with his ability to compassionately lead his men in battle.  It also emphasizes his mastery of Soresu and his ability to effortlessly deflect blaster bolts away from himself and the clones under his command.  Notice that he does not have vehicular combat: though Obi-Wan can pilot a starship (trained in pilot), it isn't something he is particularly adept at.  His Adept Negotiator talent is particularly shown in his duel with Asajj Ventress and, to a lesser extent, his dealings with Jabba the Hutt.  He has improved sense force because he was able to detect when Anakin left the system in the Twilight.  Though the SECR has Obi-Wan listed aas understand Shyriiwook, I see no evidence of that from any of the Clone Wars series.  Instead, He speaks Nelvaanese in Clone Wars (volume two of the animated series) and Ryl in The Cone Wars (season One, the CG series).
Now you know. And knowing is half the battle.

So here’s my post for Obi-Wan Kenobi as of the Phantom Menace.  I’ll address a couple of things that may raise a few eyebrows

  1. Why no Destiny Points?  It’s my opinion that Qui-Gon initially had the "Education" destiny for Anakin, but unfortunately Darth Maul's "Destruction" destiny got the better of him Tongue out  I'd say that Qui-Gon "bequeathed" Obi-Wan that destiny and a Destiny Point to go with it when Maul ran him through.

  2. Why doesn’t he have the “no-brainer” of Jedi feats, namely Skill Focus (Use the Force)?  Personal opinion, I think that feat marks the folks that are incredibly powerful; your Yodas, your Skywalkers, your Palpatines, etc.  Plus, the final duel in RotS goes to great lengths to illustrate that despite Anakin being the Chosen One, he and Obi-Wan were about equals, with Obi-Wan’s experience matching Vader’s raw power.  I think the +5 destiny bonus for having trained Anakin to Knight balances against Anakin’s +5 for Skill Focus.

  3. He's also a bit low on Force Points as he's just about to "level," and he's used quite a few up until then.

  4. He seems to be more willing & able to "go to fisticuffs" than other Jedi, hence the basic Martial Arts feat; he's something of a brawler when needs be.

(edited to prep for later builds)

Design Notes
This is my attempt at creating Obi-Wan Kenobi as I see him as of the beginning of Episode III with a blend of both combat- and skill-based abilities.

Original Ability scores were based on a 35 point buy with the fourth level increases applied in brackets beside that score (destiny bonuses are not included in this list):
Str 14, Dex 12 (+3), Con 12, Int 15 (+1), Wis 15 (+1), Cha 13 (+1)

Obi-Wan Kenobi was 38 years old as of Episode III, which is just inside the Adult age boundary for Humans.

In regards to skills:
It has been noted that, despite his dislike of flying, Obi-Wan was an accomplished pilot (so should at least be trained in the skill). Gather Information and Persuasion just seem necessary given his abilities in both investigation and negotiation - thus part of the reason for the Noble levels I've given (which I think fit him very nicely).

In regards to abilities and feats:
The talents and feats selected reflect both his phenomenal defensive abilities (Melee Defence, Wary Defender, Guardian Strike for defending others, etc.), lightsabre proficiency and his traits as a general and leader of the GAR (hence the other reason for the Noble levels as it allows progression into the Officer prestige class).

In regards to Force abilities:
Force powers are in line with what has been seen in the films and I have included two lightsabre form powers - Circle of Shelter as an acknowledged master of Soresu should have, Hawk-bat Swoop feels to me like what he used to defeat Darth Maul (and also ties in to his original focus on Ataru before Qui-Gon's death influenced his switch of form). The Force Regimens are to give him a few extra abilties - Vo'ren's First Cadence gives him the ability to use Severing Strike without having the talent (and is noted as complete as he can't actually fail it without rolling a natural 1), Awaken Force Sensitivity as he has done this with others on a few occasions (e.g. Cestus Deception), Sparring Practice and Training Remote to further enhance his lightsabre defensive traits.

Completed Destinies:

  • Discovery (Formation of the Separatist Alliance) - +1 bonus all defences

  • Education (Training of Anakin Skywalker) - +5 bonus to Use the Force checks

  • Destruction (Darth Vader) - awaiting completion

I wanted to do "Baby Obi-Wan" but a level 1 non-heroic baby does not have Weapon Proficiencies or Armor Proficiencies. Edit: Nor is a baby medium sized. So, here is Obi-Wan fresh into the Jedi Academy, or at least a short time after he begins his training.

Edit: I know this kid is well under 5 years old. I just thought the picture was humorous.

Design notes

As far as heroic characters go, I tried to portray Obiwan as relatively unspectacular, but instead thrives due to diligence and hard work.  Starting base stats are Str 12, Dex 15, Con 11, Int 13, Wis 12, Cha 12, coincidentally a 28 point buy though not diliberately.  He is well rounded above all else.  Contrary to what Anakin said in Ep 2, Obiwan is neither as powerful as Mace Windu, nor as wise as Yoda.  Obiwan was wise, but not in the extreme sense, so I chose to reflect that with a 18 score which actually started as a 12 but he used a Destiny bonus and every level bonus to raise in order to reflect the seriousness and devotion he had in training Anakin.  We see him consistently getting overpowered in brute strength by Anakin, so I gave him a 12 Str score.  No need to make it a 13 because the template does not include Power Attack.  Gave him a lackluster Con score that he boosted with 3 level up ability score increases.  Dex started as a 15 and got one point from level increases.  Intelligence is 13 because he never struck me as exceptionally bright, though hardly dull (besides it being required for Melee Defense).  Charisma is relatively low for a Jedi and I chose to offset this by using the Education bonus to Use the Force to reflect the insight he got as a result of training Anakin, who was also quite insightful if a bit proud and brash.  They truly were greater than the sum of the parts.  That should cover the basics.

The build strategy revolves around fighting primarily defensively and taking advantage of attacks of opportunity.  The high Dex reflects his aptitude in Ataru, which he abandoned in favor of Soresu.  Rather than give him a full Double Attack feat I chose to give him Saber Swarm twice.  The penalties are lessened without Multiattack Proficiency, and given the defensive nature of the build, the offensive potential should be boosted, not hindered.  Obiwan was known for fighting defensively and a master of finding that perfect chance to strike.

With that in mind, I gave him Melee Duelist's Advantageous Strike rather than the typical Weapon Flourishes as well as the Contentious Opportunity lightsaber powers.  This reflects very well his ability to take advantage of openings and Counterpunch reflects his ability to create those openings.

Mercenary's Grit reflects his patience and the sustenence he gets from the Force.  I also thought it was rather punny in the whole "if you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine" bit.

Force Shield fits a few tricks we've seen him pull such as blocking missles, grenades, and can be used to represent blocks and deflects that mechanically hit but due to his extreme defensive capabilities can be called 'misses' because they fail to deal damage.  What I mean is that Force Shield is less about actually using a shield to protect himself and more about abstractly enhancing his more conventional abilities.

I gave Martial Arts I because I believe basically every Jedi should have it, and it is arguably demonstrated by Obiwan on the Kamino landing platform.  The rest should be relatively self explanitory.

PS: I hope this format isn't too clunky and unwieldy.  I leave it like this for easy editing and level referencing.  This character sheet works equally well for Obiwan in either episode 3 or 4.

Greetings,

Obi wan has become a favorite character of mine, along with Darth Vader, Yoda, kyle katarn, and Princess Leia. I decided to write him up at the point where he is on the Death Star, about to confront Darth Vader for the second time. Without the context of his background, I didnt hold him in much high regard. Then books came out, and the prequels, which all showed some light on his past. With that, I had a much greater admiration for him and wanted to do justice to the character.

I was reading up on Obi Wan in preparation for doing this. In his youth, he was a highly skilled pilot. He was very smart, and Qui-Gon calls him "a wiser man than I am". He was very influencial and a respected leader as general. He was also a form 3 master, as well as practiced Ataru and Sokan, which he combined into his own personal fighting style. He was also described as a brilliant tactician, which is one reason why he was selected to be the High General.

I started out with a 32 point buy. I use this for all my npcs. Anything less and they are too weak. I put his age as "old" given Vaders and Han Solos comments about him being an "old man" and Luke calling him "old Ben". Also, I wanted to reflect his lightsaber like what we see his saber crystal as being in Star Wars Galaxies, as well as what we see in the duel on the Death Star. I chose a Rubat crystal because it seems closest in description to how we see Obi Wans saber blade fluctuating a little. I also factored in two completed destinies: Education (Anakin Skywalker), and Champion (High General of the Clone Wars). I gave him a third destiny that he was working on: Rescue (Luke Skywalker). There is a lot more that I wanted to put in that I simply did not have a place to incorporate, or could not fully justify. I also wanted him to be a challenge for Vader, to show that he could have defeated Vader again if he wanted. However, I personally don't believe that was his intent. His intent was to save Luke and his friends from Vader. I personally think he used a destiny point to become a force spirit. I didnt know of any real way to express that, however. The only problem I had in writing him up is that I don't have all the books. So I used what I had available. I'm sure there is more in the other books I don't have that would fit better than what I have here. Anyways, here is the write up on him.

I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.
I wanted to build a Kenobi that I would use in my game with just a hint of min/maxing to make him a great fight if a player wanted to test his luck in a friendly duel. I also wanted to make him feel like a General.

When leading his clones or the PC's he would use Grand Leader to add a nice chunk of HP to the party, he could also use Share Talent to apply a second helping of Grand leader after the fist had worn off. Born leader is also a good pick for the feeling I wanted.
As his troopes attacked he would singled out the biggest threat to take on himself.

In a duel he would try and stay at range using Adept Negotiator to weaken his foe with a force stun at the ready if he catches his foe off guard.
When his opponent moves to melee range Kenobi would fight defensively counting on Counterpunch. Contentious Opportunity would be used to bring the damage, and flurry to make up for the lower accuracy of fighting defensively
The penalties of flurry are offset by Soresu most of the time but Kenobi would need to be patient and wait for the best time to unleash his attack making sure he had the "high ground" so to say.

The Jedi Battle Armor is a nice addition thanks to Grand Army Of The Republic Training

Next entry is Obi-Wan as of Episode II.  He has honed his defensive skills since TPM.  Tumble Defense from the KotOR sourcebook will come in particularly handy in a couple of years when he faces down Vader at Mustafar.  There’s also his mastery of Soresu, but his Use the Force mod still doesn’t hold up to Lord Tyranus’ attack modifiers.  Also, Anakin having Skill Focus (Use the Force) would give him a mod higher than Obi-Wan’s, leading to “in some ways…in a lot of ways…I’m ahead of him.”
I chose Language Absorption from the KotOR sourcebook as a backing of his boast from the Tartakovsky cartoon about picking up a few things from Qui-Gon Jinn.

Next entry is for Obi-Wan as of his duel with Vader in RotS.  He has a Charisma boost for having fulfilled a Destruction destiny (General Grievous).  I opted against giving him any armor proficiencies or talents, going instead with the option from the JATM pg. 63, namely that his armor is largely symbolic and doesn’t really do anything from a game mechanical standpoint.

As an aside, I’m guessing he spent a Destiny Point vs. Grievous at some point, either to auto-crit with the blaster, or to act out of turn to shoot him in the first place.  I’m thinking he did a similar trick vs. Vader at Mustafar, possibly to auto-crit with the attack of opportunity.  Similarly, I’d say he’s low on Force Points because he’s near the end of his level.  Indeed, my next build assumes he “leveled” after the final battle of RotS.

Curses, missed the deadline Foot in mouth
Sorry about that man, but rules are rules.

(Technically, the deadline was midnight, but I let the late entries off since I was at work and couldn't post the closing message.)

Greetings,

I like all the entries. They are all well thought out and presented well. However, I don't wish to sound selfish, but I do like the one I presented more. As a result, I will have to put my vote for the one I presented.

thanks

Some really outstanding entries on this thread!

My vote goes to Lord Phobetor for his great body of work, especially the TPM build.

Man!  SO many good ones!  It was really hard to pick one, but I think of all of them, I like Darth_Scorpion's build the best, as it takes a more holistic approach to the character, so I vote for Darth_Scorpion.

Quvmoh's build is a close second for me (ugh...but that formatting! Quvmoh, I highly recommend editing your post to the standard format stat block...otherwise, it may cost you votes!), but DS's build wins for me (not because of the formatting issue).

There certainly are some good ones here!

My vote goes to Eskla for his rendition of The Clone wars General Obi Wan Kenobi. I think the utilized talents were a perfect depiction that kept with the feel of the character through the animated series’.

An extremely aesthetically pleasing portrayal!

I vote for Darth_Scorpion's

Honestly, I don't understand the format they chose to display characters. To me, it's not easier, just more confusing. Thanks for the comments though on my entry. I appreciate them.

I the formatting they use for stat blocks is useful solely as a stat block.  It is condensed for use in a book.  I use a different format because it helps me track level progression to a degree, makes vertical lists for easy reading, and makes revising and updating the character a bit easier.  It is also lengthier, but also allows notes for talents and feats you might not be familiar with.   I don't usually list 15 different lines of attack modifiers, though.  That always seemed unnecessary and monotonous.  Anyways, to each their own.
All the builds have their merits. Tough contest! In the end I was having a hard time choosing between Darth Scorpion and Eskla's builds, but my final decision is DS.
Bonus points for Beekhead's originality :D
Finally, someone else recognizes Beekhead's contributiion. Tongue out

I vote for Scorpion's.
Took a fair bit of consideration, but I decided to vote for Darth Scorpion in the end.
I vote for Dendrite's entry of Obi-Wan during Episode II.
WINNER OF YOU BUILD THE CHARACTER #6 - Qui-Gon Jinn "For 300 years we prepared, we grew stronger. While you rested in your cradle of power." -Lord Malgus, The Old Republic Trailer "Am I the only one that saw the film and thought Obi-Wan was expressing an opinion of moral superiority/ideological victory with his statement? Y'know, instead of stating to the highly experienced combatant in front of him the obvious fact that he stood a few meters below him on the vertical axis?" -d20 Radio regarding Obi-Wan's comment to Anakin "It's over Anakin. I have the high ground."
OK, everyone voting is now closed. And the winner is... Darth_Scorpion! Congratulations DS, your stats go into the YBtC Hall of Fame. Feel free to put "Winner of You Build the Character #2" in your signature.

Thank you to everyone who entered and voted, and keep your eyes peeled for the next YBtC competition.
