This thread is for discussion of this week's Sealed Deck Builder, which goes live Thursday morning on magicthegathering.com.

Here's my first attempt at the pool:

This Deck was built in 0:11:52

Total Deck Size: 40
17 Lands
---------------
10 Island
7 Mountain

14 Creatures
---------------
2 Air Servant
2 Archaeomancer
1 Battle Sliver
1 Marauding Maulhorn

1 Fireshrieker
1 Sensory Deprivation
2 Shock
2 Time Ebb

Flyers, a bomb or two, some good tempo plays, and some card advantage.  Seems solid.  But the pool also looked like it could have a pretty sweet B/W enchantment deck, or maybe even a W/U flyers deck.  I'll be back with that in a few.

Blue/White splash Black for doom blade.  Green and Red had some fine cards, but it didn't seem like they had many cards I would be happy playing and the cards they did have didn't mesh well with other colors.  I cut black down to doom blade because most of the black cards I would be happy playing had a double black casting cost.  This led me to what was obvious from the beginning: U/W flyers.  In the sideboard, there is a "disenchant", plummets, and zephyr charges.  While zephyr charge is nice with scroll thief, I would bring them in for the long game to combo with my air servants (probably replacing cancel and fortify).  If I were to do it again, I would very likely splash white for 2 seraph of the sword and pacifism (4-5 plains).  If not using blue, I would be happy splashing for the 2 air servants.

I ended up going with the BW auras deck. I felt that this deck has some really good synergies.
The Tenacious Dead is a pretty insane card to go along with any sacrifice outlet for a regen shield or a +2/+2. The Bubbling Cauldron allows for a 3 mana gain 4 life every turn as well. I really like the synergy with the Quag Sickness and the Auramancer, because generally you are using the -x/-x to kill the creature putting the aura in your graveyard. This makes for quite a lot of removal besides the Doom Blade. Instead of the Archaeomancer combo with the Doom Blade, you get Quag Sickness back for another go as well as another -2/-2 Trigger if Blightcaster in play. Has a lot of really good lategame, and I really couldn't do without playing the double Seraph of the Sword.

I decided to go American so that i could get a good range of flyers and a variety of instants and sorceries for my Young Pyromancer and Archaeomancer.

18 lands, always DRAW first.  As long as you hit your land drops, your threats are backbreaking.

This Deck was built in 0:13:22  I thought U/W Fliers was a good option, but I couldn't pass up the U/R tempo build.  Young Pyromancer can do some pretty good stuff in this deck.  Phantom Warrior, Slivers, and Dragon come out as your finishers, especially with Fireshrieker.

I built U/W fliers and wasn't happy with the curve.  B/W Auras looked interesting, as did a R/W build, but after looking at them I though U/R would perform better.  The deck can turn on a pretty decent defense mode and use Traumatize to help win a stalled game, but the second Fireshrieker may be a better option.

I decided to go with UR with green splash for briarpack alpha since I feel thta it's the strongest card, Doom Blade whiffs on a lot of targets in sealed. I could see going black instead for doom blade, but I wanted the combat trick and body instead. I like the interaction between zephyr charge and scroll thief/marauding maulhorn. At a time I was also considering putting in the cauldron to interact better with act of treason and pitchburn devils.

Tried other color combinations before settling on this one.
- This deck is absolutely all about flying.
- The deck has decent removal and answers to anything they put on the ground (Act of Treason, Pacifism, Shock, Disperse, Time Ebb)
- Archaeomancer + Young Pyromancer generates extra card advantage from the litany of spells in the deck.
- Cards considered: Scroll Thief, Dragon Hatchling, Nephalia Seakite

W/G Aurashrieker:

This has plenty of synery but lacks removal. I don't think it really matters when you have tons of staying power via 3x regen auras and 2x auramancers to bring them back.

B/R is also a good deck with synergy.

This is a strong pool, and there are a lot of X/1 decks to build. This is my super greedy 41 card X/0 deck. Just have to get a tiny bit lucky.

You really want to play those flyers.

Those flyers one turn sooner, with a trollhide next turn? Thats how you go X/0 (or sometimes 0/2)

U/W Flyers all the way with a Doom Blade splash.

I'm surprised no one else has jumped for U/G yet - probably because anyone with an ounce of sense is playing the two Seraphs of the Sword. Oh well - I've been happiest in this set so far w this color combination, so I figured I'd try it.

Against control, I'd side out Time Ebb and side in Traumatize. Against any flyers, Plummet comes in. Against aggro or weenie, drop the Guardian of the Ages and bring in the Rod of Ruin. Any deck running Lightning Talons, maybe bring in the other Time Ebb?

The main advantage here is the curve is just right - you're most often going to ramp into your three-drop off the Elf. The finisher in this deck is Condor jumping the Baloth, or the Air Servants (with or without Fireshrieker).

Wow, what a great list.  It was very tough because I can see lots of options here.

White looks like the must play, simply because of double Seraph of the Sword along with the always powerful Serra Angel.

G/W has good ramp with double Elvish Mystic along with Deadly Recluse to get you past the early rush to get to your angels.  And then you have triple Trollhide which goes great with double Auramancer.  The real problem is very little removal, at just 2.

But then you can look to Red for some more direct interaction with the opponent.  This one gives you sliver sub-theme, but really focuses around Young Pyromancer using all your instants to create the early fodder to get you to the big guns and gives you two Seismic Stomp to get your damage through when you need it most.

Or even go the U/W fliers route, with the nasty idea of lots of fliers and double Air Servant to clear the defenders away.

And if this all makes you think Black isn't any good, well let me tell you it has the kill you want, and some nasty bodies too!  This one might be the best of all of them given that with 2 Auramancer if you happen to draw your Quag Sickness it suddenly can kill 3 different creatures.  Also while I love the Fireshrieker, the hard part might be choosing which creature to equip it to!

Even if you want to not include white, you can mix and match the other colors, because they are THAT strong!

G/B might be the fastest and deadliest with 6 1cc or 2cc creatures.  Nuts draw of: T1:Forest,Elvish Mystic; T2:Swamp, Elvish Mystic; T3:Swamp, Sengir Vampire; T4:Land,Hunt the Weak Swing with a now 6/6 Sengir Vampire

Whew!  And there are so many more combos you can do.  I then looked at just how many cards are really in "unplayable" or almost never played in sealed event cards there were.  Ironically there was a rare I put in that category, but even with that, I came up with only 6 that I almost never play, and rarely if ever would sideboard it in.  Soulmender, Artificer's Hex,Shadowborn Apostle,Dragon Hatchling,Staff of the Wild Magus and Guardian of the Ages.

I mean wow!  The hard part is actually chosing a deck to play, but shoot, if you need to side board, how about changing the entire deck for game 2?  Talk about throwing their sideboarding out the window!  I think that might be the most fun part of this whole sealed group.

G/W/b angel beats.
I would be going 17 lands, but the pair of elvish mystics makes up for the last land and lets me go heavier on threats.

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."
