This is a set I'm making with some friends.

Currently working on: DESIGN - Uncommons

There's some worldbuilding I might post later. But for now, just the raw designs that make the Common portion of the set skeleton. For this reason, if you're expecting flavor and stuff, you should come back later. :>

Violence
If a violent non-creature permanent or spell would deal damage, it deals twice that much damage instead.
If a violent creature would deal or be dealt damage, it deals and is dealt twice that much damage instead.

So, the impression I'm getting is that this is a set designed to emphasize strategic combat, right? It seems like you're attempting to increase the complexity of combat in particular. Is that kind of what you're driving at?

Yeah, pretty much. I don't know if it's a good idea, but I want to see where it leads me.

I'm trying to make be like all about technique and all about brute force. And balancing that stuff is kinda difficult.

I'm not sure if it'll work either, but I'm really fascinated with the idea, and I'll be watching intently to see where it goes.

I've said it before but I'll say it again, I'm fascinated by the way you manage to capture flavor so elegantly despite apparently having very little interest in top-down design.

You sure XU01 isn't like "already" or "had" or both? I ain't no wordxpert, but I just inclined myself t'ask.

CB03 is one sick common son. I wish those be runnin' 'round all common 'n like.

CB08 is all kindsa loco sucka. Can't wait to see that flavor takin' up the trackers.  

CG05 is phukin' beautiful. I like literally gasped a little when I saw it. Honestly, that thing just moved me. I'm sorta shaken'. Wow. 
Yeah, I should take XU01 to the Wording Clinic, I thought the "instead" was enough, but I'm probably wrong here. But well, I guess the idea is clear.

As for CB03 (1B - 2/2 - At the beginning of your upkeep, ~ deals 1 damage to itself and gets +1/+0 until end of turn.), I'm really not sure how much a black vanilla 3/1 should cost, so I just costed as a bear (cause that's also what it is half of the time).

Thanks for the comments. I'll start flavoring the cards after I finish the uncommons. Of course I have an overall idea of the flavor, but I still need to adjust many details.

I guess that it's alright, because the second ability requires lots of work! Just don't put similar abilities on cards that are in play, because that would make combat math incredibly complicated for both players..
It's 10 damage for all the cards. I should ability-keyword it.

But I think that's kind of a tentative number. After I playtest the set with my friends, I'll probably tweak the number.

Your first card might be pretty strong in super-fast decks that use evasive creatures anyway, and blue doesn't really increase power and especially toughness that much.. Your second card sounds alright, you deserve powerful effects when you're playing seven-mana cards late in the game, and you'll have to build around the card..
I don't know how to feel about Whole Gale, I mean it obviously isn't broken, but does a targetting restriction really make Giant Growth blue? I don't like it, my gut says no.

The second card is really cool and probably an EDH staple but if someone breaks a 7 mana sorcery more power to them.

I mean, it's strickly better Blaze. But there are some many cards almost strictly better. Like Banefire, Demonfire, Devil's Play, Fireball, etc. So I thought of making it better just as what it does.

I don't think that it's okay, because the spell has many relevant + powerful options with lower values for X, which eliminates the most important drawback of most similar cards, where these options are definitely overcosted.. For example, your version comes with a 50% discount on "Destroy target X/1 creature." and your version also comes with a 33% discount on "Destroy target X/2 creature." Unlike with similar cards, that allows you to destroy most creatures as soon as they're played! ~.~

Well, I don't think that's a great deal TBH.

Red has better options at low CMC. This is 1 damage for R. 2 damage for 1R. 3 damage for 2R. Compared to Lightning Bolt, which is also an instant, why would you even consider this card?

This card is supposed to be better at higher CMC, at which this kind of cards tend to be played.

And, after all, Blaze isn't really good.

BTW, I think this card is actually worse than Devil's Play.

I don't agree, spells like Blaze aren't strong because single modes for specific values of X are super-effective, they're strong because of the many different options these spells provide.. The card that you posted above provides a very large number of solid options even for lower values of X, it's like you're allowed to choose between 7-8 medium-quality spells even though you have "just one card" in hand.. Lightning Bolt is only better if you're always happy with three points of damage and if you don't mind being stuck with the "wrong" card which deals the "wrong" amount of damage when you suddenly face a 4/4 creature..
Yeah, but that's why curves exist. You don't play this card to deal with X/1 or X/2 creatures.

You play Lightning Bolt in those situations. And it's absolutely better than this card.

If you're playing this card is to do it with at least +3R.

And I insist, Devil's Play is actually better than my card in like the 90%[citation needed] of games.

What if you don't manage to draw Lightning Bolt when you need three or less damage? What if you don't manage to draw Devil's Play when you need four or more damage? The card that you posted above solves this problem for a low extra price that's much lower than on most similar cards! ^.^
You mulligan or you build your deck accordingly. "What if you don't manage to draw?" isn't really an argument in Magic.

What if you don't manage to draw a Mountain? You can't play any of those cards.

When comparing cards, we assume they are in the same situation.

Why should players run different cards for different situations when there's one single card which provides medium-quality versions of all of these different cards? I just stated what I'm pretty sure is Wizards' reason to refrain from printing your version, but since you're now surprisingly confident that it's not much of a problem, you should leave the card the way it's now..
That's the difference between efficient and effective.

Yeah, this discussion was very interesting, but let's discuss some other cards now! ^.^ You're right that Devil's Play is rather strong and might have the "same" power level as this card, but it's pretty important for me that it's pushing the standards in a totally different way than the card that you posted above..
That's the difference between efficient and effective.

You're probably aware that it's just as powerful for me as the previous version, maybe you should also consider this one? This version eliminates the many "problems" with lower values of X that you don't expect! ^^;;
