Return to Hand abilities

Theoretical question to help me grade a card in the design forums:

Does this ability "If a card would be returned to your hand, return it to the battlefield instead."

a) Work
b) If used in conjunction with Grinning Ignus would it prevent the ability from adding to your hand?

My gut says

a) No, you can't return something to a zone its already in
b) No, it would essentially be like regenerating a creature with "When this creature dies" effects.

My eyes are bleeding trying to find the appropriate references in the Comp Rules though.

"Return to" and "put onto/into" means the same thing; they all indicates "move the object from zone A to zone B". You can 'return' something to a zone it never went before, for example. So a replacement certainly can make the card 'return' (move) to the zone it already is (i.e., make it stay there).


The main problem is, your effect works on non-permanent cards moving from say the graveyard to your hand - Archaeomancer, for example. It may also affect the cards you drawn. Not a good idea.



You may word it "If a permanent card would be returned to your hand, you may put it onto the battlefield instead".




EDIT: In fact, with your wording the effect applies to any card going to your hand from any zone. And I'm not sure if saying 'permanent card' would make it not work for hidden zones (i.e, from library).

Hmm, interesting points.


What about the interaction with Ignus?  Would preventing Ignus from actually going into the hand prevent the ability from triggering?

Hmm, now that I worded it that way, I'm thinking it would still add the to your pool, since a token copy of Ignus would still work.

it doesn't matter where Ignus ends up due to a replacement effect, its cost is still considered to be paid
so it would work fine
