Gamma Music

I want to compile a list of music that is either apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic (no dystopias, please) to help set the mood at the beginning of Gamma World games.  Here's what I have so far.  (Clearly, I am a child of the '80s)

  1. "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)" by R.E.M.

  2. "How Far We've Come" by Matchbox 20

  3. "Bad Moon Rising" by Credence Clearwater Revival

  4. "We Will All Go Together When We Go" by Tom Lehrer

  5. "Sinner Man, Where You Gonna Run To", traditional gospel

  6. "The Final Countdown" by Europe

  7. "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones

  8. "London Calling" by the Clash

  9. "Eve of Destruction" by the Turtles

  10. "99 Luftballoons" by Nena

  11. "Christmas at Ground Zero" by "Wierd Al" Yankovic

  12. "1999" by Prince

  13. "We Will Become Silhouettes" by Postal Service

  14. "(I'll Love You) Till The End Of The World" By Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

  15. "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash

  1. "(Nothing But) Flowers" by Talking Heads

  2. "I Remember California" by R.E.M.

  3. "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)" by Billy Joel

  4. "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan

  5. "Everything is Broken" by Bob Dylan

  6. "Badlands" by Bruce Springsteen

  7. "Wooden Ships" by Crosby, Stills & Nash

  8. The albums "2112" and "Grace Under Pressure" by RUSH

I would suggest RUSH "2112" (heck, both sides really) and "Grace Under Pressure".
But my all-time G-World favorite inspiration needs to be the Tom Petty video for "You Got Lucky"

Good call on RUSH.  The Tom Petty video is certainly post-apocalyptic, but the lyrics aren't.
The last 3 albums from Abney Park
(Lost Horizons, Aether Shanties, End of Days)

They blend in a lot of world styles and obscure instruments which fits the melded worldlines concept, and a lot of the songs are basically telling the story of a steampunk airship moving through a post apocalypse setting. The downside is it may inspire people to get that Keelboat from the starting gear list kitted out for piracy... Or that may be an upside depending on your perspective.
Movie soundtracks are amazing. Terminator II (my personal favorite), the Matrix, Fast & Furious... anything to get the table adrenaline up.
"1999" by Prince
"Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult (always reminds me of "The Stand")
"We Will Become Silhouettes" by the Postal Service. After surviving the radioactive apocalypse...
I use a lot of Aphex Twin. It's a great, dirty sound.

the album: Warp Riders by The Sword

here is a track  (incidentally, I think that tune could be a cool launch point for a D&D or Gamma World campaign)
Here is my Gamma World playlist:

The "Sorcerer" soundtrack By Tangerine Dream
"(I'll Love You) Till The End Of The World" By Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
"The Adversary" By Crime & The City Solution
"Asche Zu Asche" By Rammstein
"Headhunter V3.0" By Front 242
"Down In The Park" By Gary Numan
"Weapons Of Mass Distortion" By The Crystal Method
"Until The End Of The World" By U2
"Future Legend/Diamond Dogs" By David Bowie
"Beautiful World" By DEVO
"Search & Destroy" By Iggy & The Stooges
"The Man Machine" By Kraftwerk

Tu-Pac. Start to finish.
Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around:
Powerman 5000 - When Worlds Collide
The Borderlands videogame soundtrack is perfect.
Some more tracks that I think would be a great fit:

Suede - Stay Together (Full Version)
The B-52's - Rock Lobster - that vaguely sounds like a true gamma monster
The Beatles - Help!
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man
Vangelis - One More Kiss, Dear (part of Blade Runner soundtrack and very Falloutish)
Muse - Knights of Cydonia
Pink Floyd - Is There Anybody Out There?
Pixies - Wave of Mutilation
Porcupine Tree - Radioactive Toy
The Shortwave Set - Replica
Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around:

Great pick!
Moby....I like Play it feels to me like something that was made form pieces and parts. Cage the Elephant.....and the rest of the Borderlands sound track. I also like a few things out of "Age of Conan" sound track.....
Check out "Barra Barra" from the Blackhawk Down soundtrack. It's a tribal-sounding Arabic song that's just perfect for a GW marketplace or tavern or other "alien feel" place.

And to second it, the Borderlands soundtrack, along with the ending credits tune "No Heaven" by Champion, are perfect as well.
Since I record my sessions, I am looking for music that I can use legally as part of my game.  I have come up with Ghosts I-IV and The Slip which are Creative Commons releases.  I also am adding a lot of things from the experimental section of the community audio section of the Internet Archive.  This is a particularly good soundtrack for a GW game.

There are lots of other dark atmospheric tracks there also.  And some truly weird stuff like
where they take a minute long text as read by a computer and playing it back into the room to record it again.  They then do that over and over 59 times.  The slight delay imposed by each of the recordings turns it into just a ambient soundscape after about 30 recordings and you can't recognize words anymore, it has just turned into music.  I am going to put all 59 tracks scattered throughout my game mix and see if anyone gets suspicous about it.
Blue Oyster Cult - Veteran of the Psychic Wars
Tina Turner - We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)
Rob Zombie - Reload
Rob Zombie - Superbeast
Dean Elliot - Thundarr the Barbarian opening theme
The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die!
Motorhead - Ace of Spades (the ideal Porker themesong)
Lunatic Calm - Leave You Far Behind
Jenny Owen Youngs - What the F#ck Was I Thinking?
The Laziest Men On Mars - The Terrible Secret of Space
Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla
KLF - What Time is Love?
MC Lars - iGeneration
MC Lars - Space Game
Strong Bad - Trogdor the Burninator
Flight of the Conchords - Robots (The Distant Future)
KMFDM - Megalomaniac (Excessive Force Remix)

my first stab at dming this is coming up. i plan on using some mixture of these three artists.

drawing a lot of inspiration for the gamma world style from sources like the church of the subgenius and the 80's film the toxic avenger. really want to drive home the freakish extra-dimensional explosion element.

Does Komm Susser Tod count?

Zammm = Batman.

Funny story: InQuest Magazine (I think it was InQuest) had an oversized Chaos Orb which I totally rooked someone into allowing into a (non-sanctioned) game. I had a proxy card that was a Mountain with "Chaos Orb" written on it. When I played it, my opponent cried foul: Him: "WTF? a Proxy? no-one said anything about Proxies. Do you even own an actual Chaos Orb?" Me: "Yes, but I thought it would be better to use a Proxy." Him: "No way. If you're going to put a Chaos Orb in your deck you have to use your actual Chaos Orb." Me: "*Sigh*. Okay." I pulled out this huge Chaos Orb and placed it on the table. He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board. Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.

Hi guys! So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic. I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked. Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon. Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in. Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play. I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's. However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks. I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real. I want to begin playing it as a regular. My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck? Or are there special rules? Are some cards forbidden or restricted? Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.
I have the same problem with women.

And that's why you should never, ever call RP Jesus on being a troll, because then everyone else playing along gets outed, too, and the thread goes back to being boring.

See, this is why RPJesus should be in charge of the storyline. The novel line would never have been cancelled if he had been running the show. Specifically the Slobad and Geth's Head talkshow he just described.

Not only was that an obligatory joke, it was an on-topic post that still managed to be off-topic due to thread derailment. RP Jesus does it again folks.

It was wonderful. Us Johnnies had a field day. That Timmy with the Grizzly bears would actually have to think about swinging into your Mogg Fanatic, giving you time to set up your silly combo. Nowadays it's all DERPSWING! with thier blue jeans and their MP3 players and their EM EM OH AR PEE JEES and their "Dewmocracy" and their children's card games and their Jersey Shores and their Tattooed Tenaged Vampire Hunters from Beverly Hills
Seriously, that was amazing. I laughed my *ss off. Made my day, and I just woke up.

So that even the decks that don't run it run it to deal with it? Isn't that like the definition of format warping?

...Am I the only one that thinks this is reaching the point of downright Kafkaesque insanity?
I condone the use of the word Kafkaesque. However, I'm presentely ambivalent. I mean, that can't be serious, right? We're April 1st, right? They didn't mod RPJesus for off-topic discussion when the WHOLE THREAD IS OFF-TOPIC, right? Right.

That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players. And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it. He/It got me with Light of Sanction, which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).

Blue players get all the overpowerered cards like JTMS. I think it's time that wizards gave something to people who remember what magic is really about: creatures.
Initially yes, Wizards was married to blue. However, about a decade ago they had a nasty divorce, and a few years after that they began courting the attention of Green. Then in Worldwake they had a nasty affair with their ex, but as of Innistrad, things seem to have gotten back on track, and Wizards has even proposed.
You are my favorite. Yes you. And moments like this make it so. Thank you RPJesus for just being you.

10/10. Amazing.
I am planning on busting out Pendulum's Slam...

... when the players figure out how the special ancient junk (a tiny serrated metal stick with a plastic base?  Junk!) they just picked up transforms their rusty pickup from a convenient horse-wagon to a sweet ride and start barrelling down some crumbling desert highways.  It's all awesome "low rider" type stuff in the beginning and then kicks into high gear - perfect for a chase scene when something large and hungry gets wind of the noise!

Also considering The Terminal off of the same album for a climactic encounter with an ancient android computer intelligence.

Also strongly considering recreating the intro scene from Borderlands, but we'll see who in the audience has actually played the game first. ;)
Oh wow, I've got to go home and find my list of tunes and post it!
