Ironlightsaber Customs

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL043.jpg)

It's been over year since I posted any images of my custom figs so I figure it's about time to post some more. Some were posted before, but I included them so all my mods would appear in a single thread. I just got this camera and it really doesn't do the figs justice but I figure some pics are better than no pics at all. I hope you enjoy.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL001.jpg)

"Admiral Ackbar" was one of my first mods I ever made and I got 4 stitches in my thumb making him. The exacto knife went right through the plastic and down to the bone in my thumb. You might be able to tell which mods were made while I had stitches :P. I made "Bespin Han" as a stand-in fig for nimzomitch until he pulled a RS Han. It was made from a Naboo Soldier and is rather blocky because it was only meant to be a stand in piece. The "Dead Rebel" was made by cutting up a Rebel Trooper, repositioning the pieces and gluing them back to the base.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL002.jpg)

These two E-Web Blasters are not mods but were made from scratch. I used plastic pieces left over from models, bits of metal, half of a Gonk Power Droid and some Sculpey to create them. I also made stat cards for it and other items that I hope to post for others to use. The stats and rules cards are from the Ultimate Mission books, except the rules on jumping which is a mix of all the different UM rules cleaned up into one.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL003.jpg)

Here are some modded "Scout Troopers-Running Toward the Fight". I just cut them at the waist, rotated them a little, glued it and then sculpted the waist to look correct. The arms were cut and pinned as well. The "Dead Trooper" fig was made like the above "Dead Rebel".

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL004.jpg)

These are my modded Imperial Officers-"Death Star Officer" was made from an Imperial Officer body with a Rebel Trooper head. "Imperial Officer-Being Choked" was made the body of the above mentioned Rebel Trooper with an Imperial Officer's head. "Imperial Officer-At Attention" was made from Tarkin's body with an Imperial officer's head. Tarkin's head was used for a different mod that you'll see later on.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL005.jpg)

This is a "Twi'lik Sith" with a couple of droid friends from the Death Star. The body of the "Twi'lik Sith" was made from a Klatooninian Enforcer with the head of a Twi'lik Scoundrel. I gave him two lightsabers and Sith tattoos on his lekku to add some personality. "The Death Star Droid" is just an R2 repainted to look like the droid found on the Second DeathStar and the "Interrogation Droid" was made completely from Sculpey. I included the front of the stat card I made for reference.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL006.jpg)

Here's my "Darth Vader-Who's Your Daddy?". The fig was made from RS Darth Vader-Dark Jedi. The scene it's from is still one of the best in all movies. I know that his lightsaber was off when he held his hand out to Luke but I decided to keep it on for the mini.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL007.jpg)

These are a couple of modded Tuskens. The two with staffs were cut, adjusted, pinned and sculpted into different poses. The Tusken on the Bantha and the Tusken on the left were cut at the waist and switched. I've seen that other people have done this switch as well; it's quite simple to do and I highly recommend it.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL008.jpg)

The "Oola-Doomed Dancer" was a Twi'lek Bodygaurd that was completely cut apart at all the joints, pinned and readjusted. I used the staff for the chain and positioned it to look like Jabba was pulling on it. "Bib Fortuna" was a Twi'lek Scoundrel and I hope that WOTC will make one with a CE that improves Jabba. "Boba Fett" was a CS Clone Trooper that I made as a stand-in until I finally got one (I ended up having to buy it).

NICE!!

Ironlightsaber, the legend that is. I have finally created an account on the Wizard forums, after seeing your devArt account and after watching your custom thread for so long. It is quite an inspirational thread-- indeed it has served as my muse for customising many a time.

In particular i would have to say that your General Grievous custom (the one in which you cut up a GGJH!) is my favourite after all this time! His pose is dynamic, and the colours used for him are true to the feel of the clone wars series. I just wish WotC took a leaf from your book just this once and copied his pose for GaW so we could all own him! Laughing alas, it wasnt to be... maybe next time though huh? I also enjoyed the slow reveal you did for VSA, which turned out so well.

I hope you continue to make custom miniatures long into the future. They are thought-provoking works that help our game to change and survive.

Thanks for the kinds words and I get as much inspiration looking at the other custom threads on these boards. That Grievous is still one of my all time favorites as well.

I haven't posted new material in a while but that will soon change. I just finished kit-bashing a dozens of pocketmodel SW ships into other ships for my RPG game and plan on painting them and posting up pics to this thread. In addition to that, I have several other items I need to photograph and post here like the TIE Prototype factory ship, affectionally named "The Abyss", that was in our last game. And if that wasn't enough I am currently finishing up several custom figs for our game and will post up images soon. I ask my players not to view this thread after this post until after these are revealed in our game in the coming months.

In the meantime I thought I would share pics of the latest commission that I finished for Lady Hothie and Hothie. The sent me a fig and had specific directions on the effect they wanted but left the creation up to me. After brainstorming ideas and passing those back and forth with them I settled on the scheme. Unfortunately some of the ideas I had didn't pan out due to the difference of scale of a fig I wanted to incorporate so the piece became a repaint instead of a reposing/repaint custom.

So without further ado I present...........

Hello Boba!

Photobucket

Photobucket

I was able to give it to Hothie in person when we surprised him at his local FLGS for a surprise tournament arranged by Lady Hothie. They really liked it and that is what matters when creating customs for someone else. Hothie kept it by his map during the tournament for luck and it must have worked since he went undefeated the whole day!!

Yes, the Hello Kitty theme is amazing (and I might add, I think it looks better than the original). Every time I look at it I smile. Thanks so much for painting him up, and we hope to see you again soon!

Nice one but personally I like the one of you proposing better. Wink

With the Christmas Blizzard of '09 hitting I was able to catch up on finishing some minis and to take pictures of the ones I have finished over the past two months. All of the stuff I have been working on lately has been for the Star Wars RPG campaign that I have been running for the last year.

I have always liked having a custom of my characters in RPG games and wanted to make customs for all my players. It helps players identify their character and fellow players on the battle field quicker, avoids confusion when you have multiples of the same fig on the table and it helps everyone connect to the characters better, at least in my opinion. I had to wait a couple of games to get an idea of what the characters were suppose to be like before I started and then it took a while to find the right pieces.

Photobucket

This first one is of the medic of the group, Cluade. The player had been using the base fig for his character but in the process of playing he had picked up a bigger gun and tended to carry a lot of gear. I had him pointing to show the fact that the player tends to act first and then if needed use his gun.

Photobucket

The Jedi of the group, O'dian, is a Pau'an and there isn't very many figs to chose from. The second challenge is that species is not known to be very dynamic in their actions and I wanted the hero figs to be in very intense action poses as possible. After careful consideration I went for as movement as possible for the species but still keeping it in character. Added to the fact that I wanted it to look like he was leading somewhat with his right side because the character lost his left eye in a lightsaber battle.

Photobucket

I can't take credit for this custom but included it because it is one of the characters in the game. This custom of the character Grem was made by my good friend nimzomitch from a couple of D&D figs that I picked up that I felt fit the description of the type of creature he wanted to play. It is a force sensitive species that can't talk. It has made for some great role-playing and the fig really does the character justice.

 Photobucket

Klecser plays a Bothan Nobel named Ar'Ryn who is not afraid to let his blaster tip his arguments. I enjoyed making this one because of the detail to the hair color, the armor and  creating a more dynamic pose to the original fig. When I was finished I thought about cutting it from the base and centering it more but I decided to wait. After thinking about it, his character and Grem spend a lot of time together so I took the left over pieces that nimzomitch didn't use and made a rough proxy of Grem that could be removed or added as needed. It balances out the look of the piece when it is there and it is not missing when it is gone.

Photobucket

I checked and the proxy piece fits on the other hero figs as well so it makes it easier to track that character in the game. Sometime it hangs from O'dian's arm, sits on Cluade's shoulders or hooks onto the other heroes.

Photobucket

The hero in the game is a Gand named Xextuss and since there is only one Gand fig so far I was limited on what I could use. With the sculpt of the fig it is really hard to make any major changes besides rotating it's head and maybe giving it a repaint. So I took the route of making additives to it that fit with the character. The player uses a heavy blaster rifle and has a hidden knife that folds out and can be used as a bayonet. The character also got ahold of a jetpack and has used it in many interesting and useful ways. With those changes it really made the fig come to life.

Photobucket

In the second game the players faced off with a raider gang on speeders and Xextuss got ahold of the leaders. It has been getting repaired this whole time but the next time they reach home it will be ready and so will the custom of it. I added some special modifications including an exhaust vent that can have fuel dumped into it so that it shoots flames, a targeting gun under the front and a harpoon and tow cable on the back. It should be interesting to see how these get played out in the game.

Photobucket

When placed together they look like the rough and ready team that they are.

Photobucket

Add in the major friendly NPCs that they work with all the time and it is quite the group of resistance fighters that has formed up already in the first year.

Besides the figs I wanted to make customs of the ships that the players own because space battle is an important part of the game as it is in the Star Wars movies.

Photobucket

The above is their main ship, The Horizon's Edge, and is the focal point of the story. They had to do some dirty deeds with some Hutts and jump through several hoops but I'm sure that they think it has been worth it. I took some of the Poketmodels  I picked up cheap and kit bashed it together. After they made some changes to the ship I made further changes to the custom to reflect it.

Photobucket

The second ship that came into their grasps, the Trask-1, they encountered during a rescue in a nebula. It's based on a ship in the Starships of the Galaxy RPG book. This made it a challenge because I wanted it to look as close as possible to it and only had so many pieces to work from.

Photobucket

The last ship they gained was a TIE Prototype that they battled a Dark Jedi to gain and had engineers reverse engineer to find out it's secrets and then reconfigure to hid it's origins and renamed the Nexu's Fang. I took a TIE fighter Pocketmodel and cut it up into a shape that I felt  made sense as a fighter still and then added some elements to change the profile slightly more.

Photobucket

So the crew already has the start of a small fleet of ships with different purposes. The Horizon's Edge acts the main ship,  a mobile base that the other ships hook onto as well as their main heavy gun. The Trask-1 acts as a main shuttle and large fighter while the Nexu's Fang is a true fighter with a hyperdrive.

To truly make the game come to life with customs it is important that not all the customs are of just the heroes. I have been pulling in tons of my old customs to act as friendly and not so friendly NPCs, villains and creatures. Still sometimes I'll want to make a custom to make a NPC or villain really stand out if I don't have a fig or older custom that works.

Photobucket

One of the recent NPCs that played a major role was the Nelvannian leader Tozvos. He basically told the heroes that they were expected and were to help fight off a great evil. There wasn't much I could do to the pose due to the sculpt but I wanted the repose to show his leadership role and make him stand apart from the rest of his pack of hunters. I also change some of the color elements to denote his place in the tribe and it really worked well on the battle field to make him stand apart.

Photobucket

In between the group games I ran a solo adventure for the Jedi of the group so that he could have his Jedi trials and not take the focus of the entire group's time. I had him go to Dagobah, run into Yoda and fight a pair of "Near Sith" at the Dark Side Cave. If you are going to have Yoda appear and fight baddies then those baddies should stand out. Again there wasn't much I could do in the repose department so I went with adding some bushy flock to the the character to help represent the fact that he had been on Dagobah for too long.

Photobucket

While Yoda face off against the Swampy Dark Side Master, O'dian was facing off against his apprentice. I had created a different version but didn't like it. In the meantime my cat took off with it and I never found it again. So I had to make another one and it turned out better than the first. The body was from a D&D fig I had taken parts off before and I created the Scythe Saber to make her stand out. In the battle she took out O'dian's eye so I'm sure the player will remember the encounter for a long time.

Photobucket

I wanted her to have a nasty pet to help her fight the Jedi and using greenstuff I added to a Mastiff to give it more weapons such as added spike and a barbed tail. I gave it a simple paint and wash and it was finished. It didn't survive the encounter but the apprentice did which in game terms means that she will be back to fight another day.

Photobucket

Together they made a nasty combo. Even though the Sith mutated Mastiff was killed I'm sure she can make another so the custom will come in handy again in the near future.

Sometimes the idea for a villain will come from creating the stats, sometimes for the role I want it to fill and sometime from the extra fig I have on hand. Dr. Sladder is a case of all three.

Photobucket

I had an extra Lobot and I wanted to have a villian that the heroes would first encounter in his base while seeking shelter. I wanted the doctor to be a mad scientist type that was xenophobic and had most of his brain replace with a machine that allowed him to control other droids. I did a digital picture of the character an based on that design I created the fig.

Photobucket

To add to his character I wanted him to have a lackey like Igor is to Dr. Frankenstien so I repainted an R4 droid and named him R4-H8. When the evil Doctor would leave the room the his droid would stay behind to spy on them and it really help hinder what the heroes could say to the other NPCs. I expect some great droid vs. droid action in the near future between this guy and Ar'Ryn side kick droid.

Photobucket

These two will be the bane in the heroes side many times in the future and it will be interesting to see how the heroes deal with them.

Along with having villain and NPC customs, something I wanted to do with my campaign was to have custom villain ships. The first major story arc ended with the heroes tracking down a TIE Prototype factory only to realize that it wasn't a building but in fact a factory ship. Since this was the climax of the story and it had played a key role in the string of adventures I wanted to be sure that the ship really stood out.

I took some plastic containers, cut them to fit and taped them together. Then using spare parts from a Falcon model and other spare parts I kit bashed it together. I wanted the design to look like it was from the Empire but industrial as well.  It had to have lots of guns, a massive ion gun, a bridge, engine section and a factory section with a hanger. This was the end result.

It was a great battle and everyone had a blast.

Pictures of the actual battle can be seen on the wiki of the campaign here-
community.wizards.com/wiki/The_Battle_of...

The main page of the wiki is here-
community.wizards.com/wiki/The_Horizon\'...

There is detailed notes on the characters, npcs, ships (with stats) and much more there. It is a work in progress but it is coming along nicely.

The final custom is one for a character I made for a D&D game that I hope starts soon. The player who runs Cluade in our game is going to run a 4E D&D set in Greyhawk. I'm looking forward to it and wanted to make my custom as I developed my character. I picked up a Heroclicks fig of Shaman (I think that's what it was) hovering with lighting around him, cut off all the lighting and then worked on the actual fig. The base is a Zayne Carric fig that I added a greenstuff backpack, beltbags, longerhair and a super weathered cloak to after I had reposed the whole thing. Then I gave it a paint job from top to bottom and when it was dry I added the lighting.

Photobucket

I took the extra bolts left over and fit them to a an empty base to make it look like strikes of lighting. I can't wait until the first game when I cast a lighting bolt and throw it on the table.

Photobucket

Hope you liked the update. I'll be working on more stuff as well as my RPG game for the seeable future, so if you don't see any new customs soon don't worry I'll have another major update sooner than later. Until then I hope everyone has a great new year in 2010.

You have the luckiest players. (My favorite of the minis is Cluade. Finally a good use for the Human Scout.)

EDIT: Did you add anything to the front end of the speeder? I've been wanting to get one for a custom but can't tell from the picture how the parts in front of the handlebars really look.

Yeah, there are a lot of little changes to the front of the bike. The fins are actually on posts and I cut and moved them into the place they appear.

Boss Nass
Thank you all for the kind words.

As everyone knows, the announcement was made that the Star Wars Miniature and RPG game will be ending in April. This is sad news but not unexpected. It will be nice to have been here since the beginning and to see the end of the line. I'll be able to review and rearrange my collection based on the total number of pieces produced and figure in room for all my customs. That said, I would like to take a minute to reflect on what this game has meant to me.

I have enjoyed these games on many different levels and have some outstanding memories and I'm sure I'll have many more. This includes running the first Nexus event with Scruffynerfherder, running the second Nexus event & the 3D Battle of Hoth, the local tournaments including the release events, the Ironman Tournament & the 2009 GenCon Regionals, Doug's Surprise Tournament, and the first New Year's Eve Tournament, which was the first tournament I ever attended.

Getting to go to Celebration 4 as a finalist for the Epic Battles contest was a major highlight for me. Being a Star Wars fan since I was four, the Celebration was like my version of Woodstock. I met many new people and got to hang out with old friends and had an amazing time. Going to GenCon this past year to judge the customs contest and tournaments was another major highlight for me. I had always wanted to go to the biggest gaming convention and it was everything I expected it to be and more.

Getting the chance to write several different articles for the official site was also a fantastic memory. I am still really proud of my series on making customs and have been floored by the number of people who have written to tell how I helped open that door to this side of the hobby when they never considered even trying to make customs before they read the articles. Getting the chance to work with Klecser on both the unofficial and official S3 puzzles was an opportunity that I never even considered until it all happened. Having the chance to write up the last official previews (so far, unless there are previews for the last set) and making sure that the did justice to the fans of the games was a real privilege. The previews wouldn't have been as complete without the help from good friends and for that I thank them.

Still the most important aspect that I have gained from playing these games, without a doubt, has to be the friends that I have made that I would have never otherwise have even met. First of these is Mike Fryda, who I now consider to be one of my closest friends. There are so many other local players that became my friends over the years that it is hard to remember them all. This includes Jon, Jim, Matt Hansen, Scott K., Chris, Jason, Mike (Scruffy) and many others in the Nebraska area. I have to give a special shout out to Doug and Dajuan; between the great times at C4 and the parties, there is no way we are not going to know each other as we all grow old.

Then there is all the people I have met and became friends with on these boards and at events. Adliv and Myname were a constant source of inspiration when it came to customs. Jim Fraiser is one of the classiest people I have ever had the good fortune to meet. Dean and Bill have always had a passion for this game that I have always respected. Then there are those who have assisted me in my VCL duties as Forum Guides or volunteers who ran contests including Jason Tanner, Fool, Pink Jedi Ranger, RavingDork and many others. And proving that you can't judge people by just what you perceive them to be online is Dennis (Boris); and getting to know him at GenCon was easily one of the top highlights from that trip. There is a ton of people that I haven't mentioned that have had a positive impact on my SWM experience that I can't even begin to list them all; but to them, and all those mentioned, I would like to say thank you.

This customs thread was the first major piece of work that I put together for these boards and over the weekend it reached a milestone of having 50,000 views. That works out to an average of 33 views per day since it was started. At this point there has been over 400 posts. I'm not sure at this point what will happen to this thread and the other major threads (and wiki) that  I created but one way or another they will be carried on and I will continue to update them as long as people keep looking.

I would like to finish this post by saying thank you to everyone for taking the time to view this thread and for comments that you provided. May the Force be with you!!!!!!!

I too wonder if WOTC will have to drop the SW forums when they drop the license. I frequent the D20radio forum on Order 66 and I use the same ID there. I look forward to seeing the fan generated content that will be produced. I guess if we want new minis we will have either modify old minis or make made from scratch customs.

It been a great ride and I have made a few friends I plan to continue with the SW RPG and minis for years to come. I truly enjoy the hobby and seeing others work weather its 3D terrain of custom/mod Mini's.  Thank you Ironlightsaber for taking the time to share your work. You have so many pieces I would love to replicate or use as reference for a mini in my chosen pose or likeness. You wouldn't by chance be attending ReaperCon?
No I'm not. Currently I'm looking into see if I am going to GenCon.

@Ironlightsaber!
Wow!
that post really gives people insight into just how 'connected' behind the scenes you and others were, Ironlightsaber! Surprised Thanks for all that work! You did all that AND managed to make awesome customs? That boggles the mind!

I watch your devart account from time to time... they seem pretty stable, and you get a lot of traffic from the adsense stuff that goes around. Maybe you could use it more? I dunno... Laughing

In any event, i hope you continue making customs long past the end of this game.
Maybe some more of those helpful "how to's" you used to make?
And definitely more custom competitions! Laughing Ask WotC if you can stockpile now for future competitions. Im sure they would do it if it meant keeping SOME of the customers they are losing with the end of the game. Undecided

Kobayashimaru
hat figure did you use for O'dian?
For O'dian I used the upper torso from Tion Medon from RotS and the lower half from a Sith Apprentice from Jedi Academy. The arms had to be carefully cut and pinned to achieve the pose and then it was a matter of mixing the right color to match the garments from top to bottom.

Yes, do you sell minis? These are genius!

none of your pictures are working any more Ironlightsaber.

Is anyone know if his custom mini blog is up anywhere else?  I've never looked past the first 6 pages or so and someone recently informed me that this entire thread is full of his work.

You Do realize Iron hasn't been on here in over three years right? He's pretty much retired from gaming as far as I know. Your best bet is to find out who he played with and see if they've seen/heard from him.

PS - Your first clue should've been his pictures are gone (Translation - He's not maintaining his pic website. Smile

Peace.

There are a bunch of links listed as Customizing Star Wars Minis.  Those are Ironlightsaber's custom minis blogs.
