Please contribute your tips and tricks for Optimizing Polymorph

There are two common uses for the Polymorph spell:
  • Combat prowess
The simplest way to optimize this is to use a humanoid like form with high Strength, wield an appropriately sized weapon and go to town.
Another aspect is to change into a form that has many natural attacks or high damage natural attacks.
However, do not overlook the Special Attacks that some of these creatures have. Poisons, brain extraction, rend, pounce, improved grapple, etc are all good ways to end a fight before it even gets started.

  • Utility
There are some forms that can do more than just combat: Flying transportation for you and your friends, taking out large metal objects such as bars, gates or golems, natural invisibility for scouting.

In addition to the Polymorph spell there are other Transmutation spells in the Spell Compendium that each allow only a specific shape and abilities. PHB2 and Complete Mage also have the Polymorph Subschool which radically changes the way that spells of that Subschool work.

If you want to read errata and updates to polymorph check out the Easy to Read Polymorph Errata thread.

To summarize: The wording in the spells Alter Self and Polymorph override the new Polymorph subschool text, so it has no immediate effect on them. However, new spells which use the Polymorph subschool have some significant restrictions (such as losing all class abilities, including spell casting) placed upon them.

Polymorph
The new form may be of the same type as the subject or any of the following types: aberration, animal, dragon, fey, giant, humanoid, magical beast, monstrous humanoid, ooze, plant, or vermin. The assumed form can’t have more Hit Dice than your caster level (or the subject’s HD, whichever is lower), to a maximum of 15 HD at 15th level.

Don't forget when you polymorph into a creature you turn into that type and subtype. Specific types have common natural abilities:

Dragon Type
-- Immunity to magic sleep effects and paralysis effects.
Giant Type
-- Proficient with all simple and martial weapons
Ooze Type
-- Blind, with immunity to gaze attacks, visual effects, illusions, and other attack forms that rely on sight.
-- Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning.
-- Not subject to critical hits, sneak attacks or flanking.
Plant Type
-- Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects)
-- Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning.
-- Not subject to critical hits or sneak attacks.

Cold Subtype
-- A creature with the cold subtype has immunity to cold. It has vulnerability to fire (+50% damage)
Fire Subtype
-- A creature with the fire subtype has immunity to fire. It has vulnerability to cold (+50% damage)

Air Subtype
-- Air creatures always have fly speeds and usually have perfect maneuverability. You gain the assumed form's fly speed .
Earth Subtype
-- Earth creatures usually have burrow speeds, and most earth creatures can burrow through solid rock. You get the assumed form's speed.
Water Subtype
-- Creatures with the water subtype always have swim speeds and can move in water without making Swim checks. A water creature can breathe underwater and usually can breathe air as well. You gain the assumed form's swim speed.

--

Funny Slaughter is the author of the original polymorph 3.5 thread from which a lot of this material has been pulled.
I call these Combat Only forms as they do not have a Humanoid like form that would allow you to continue to wear your armor and use your weapons. So in most of these forms you will use the natural attacks of the form to deal damage.

NOTE: You will need to change the Attack entry to reflect your BAB and new (polymorphed) Strength score.

Polymorph Any Object
The Polymorph Any Object spell allows you to take the form of objects, which opens up Constructs and Undead as additional forms you can assume. In addition, you gain the Intelligence score of the new form.

Construct Type
-- No Constitution score.
-- Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).
-- Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, and necromancy effects.
-- Cannot heal damage on their own, but you often can be repaired by exposing yourself to a certain kind of effect (see the creature's description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. A construct with the fast healing special quality still benefits from that quality.
-- Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain.
-- Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless).
-- Not at risk of death from massive damage. Immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points or less.
-- Because its body is a mass of unliving matter, a construct is hard to destroy. It gains bonus hit points based on size, as shown on the table in the Monster Manual glossary.
-- Constructs do not eat, sleep, or breathe.

Elemental Type
-- Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, and stunning.
-- Not subject to critical hits or flanking.
-- Elementals do not eat, sleep, or breathe.

Undead Type
-- No Constitution score.
-- Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).
-- Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, and death effects.
-- Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability drain, or energy drain. Immune to damage to its physical ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution), as well as to fatigue and exhaustion effects.
-- Cannot heal damage on its own if it has no Intelligence score, although it can be healed. Negative energy (such as an inflict spell) can heal undead creatures. The fast healing special quality works regardless of the creature's Intelligence score.
-- Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects or is harmless).
-- Uses its Charisma modifier for Concentration checks.
-- Not at risk of death from massive damage, but when reduced to 0 hit points or less, it is immediately destroyed.
-- Undead do not breathe, eat, or sleep.

These spells do not have the Polymorph Subschool, but unlike the Polymorph spell, the only let you assume the form and very specific abilities of a creature.

New polymorph like spells from:

Spell Compendium

ASPECT OF THE EARTH HUNTER
Transmutation
Level: Druid 6, ranger 4
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 10 minutes/level (D)
When you cast this spell, you assume the physical appearance and many of the qualities and abilities of a bulette (MM 30). While under the effect of the spell, your creature type changes to magical beast, and your size changes to Huge. You have the space and reach of a bulette (XX feet/XX feet). You gain the Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution of an average bulette (Str XX, Dex XX, Con XX), but you retain your own mental ability scores. Your base land speed becomes XX feet, and you gain a burrow speed of XX feet. You gain darkvision out to XX feet. You also gain low-light vision, scent, and tremorsense out to XX feet.
Your class and level, hit points, alignment, base attack bonus, and base saving throw bonuses all remain the same. You lose any extraordinary special abilities of your own form, as well as spell-like and supernatural abilities. You keep all extraordinary special attacks derived from class levels (such as a barbarian's rage or a rogue's sneak attack), but you lose any from your normal form that are not derived from class levels. You cannot speak or cast spells while in bulette form. However, if you have the Natural Spell feat, you can cast spells normally.
Your natural armor bonus becomes +XX, regardless of any natural armor bonus from your normal form. You can make two claw attacks, which are natural weapons that deal 2d8+8 points of damage. While in bulette form, you gain the bulette's leap extraordinary attack form, allowing you to make four claw attacks instead of two. Your equipment melds into your new form and becomes nonfunctional.

And because of the Polymorph subschool, you lose your spell casting class feature!

Polymorph Subschool text from Complete Mage
----------------------------------------------------------
THE POLYMORPH SUBSCHOOL
A feature introduced in Player's Handbook II and further developed in this book is the polymorph subschool, which is defined and explained below.
A spell of the polymorph subschool changes the target's form from one shape to another. Unless stated otherwise in the spell's description, the target of a polymorph spell takes on all the statistics and special abilities of an average member of the new form in place of its own except as follows:
• The target retains its own alignment (and personality, within the limits of the new form's ability scores).
• The target retains its own hit points. The target is treated has having its normal Hit Dice for purpose of adjudicating effects based on HD, such as the sleep spell, though it uses the new form's base attack bonus, base save bonuses, and all other statistics derived from Hit Dice.
• The target retains the ability to understand the languages it understands in its normal form. If the new form is normally capable of speech, the target retains the ability to speak these languages as well. It can write in the languages it understands, but only if the new form is capable of writing in some manner (even a primitive manner, such as drawing in the dirt with a paw).
In all other ways, the target's normal game statistics are effectively replaced by those of the new form. The target loses all of the special abilities it has in its normal form, including its class features (even if the new form would normally be able to use these class features).
If the new form's size is different from the target's normal size, its new space must share as much of the original form's space as possible, squeezing into the available space (PH 148) if necessary. If insufficient space exists for the new form, the spell fails.
Any gear worn or carried by the target melds into the new form and becomes nonfunctional. When the target reverts to its true form, any objects previously melded into the new form reappear in the same location on its body they previously occupied and are once again functional. Any new items worn in the assumed form fall off and land at the target's feet.
The spellcaster can freely designate the new form's minor physical qualities (such as hair color and skin color) within the normal ranges for a creature of that kind. The new form's significant physical qualities (such as height, weight, and gender) are also under the spellcaster's control, but they must fall within the norms for the new form's kind. The target of a polymorph spell is effectively camouflaged as a creature of its new form, and gains a +10 bonus on Disguise checks if it uses this ability to create a disguise.
If the target of a polymorph spell is slain or rendered unconscious, the spell ends. Any part of the body that is separated from the whole remains polymorphed until the effect ends.
Incorporeal or gaseous creatures are immune to polymorph spells, as are creatures of the plant type. A creature with the shapechanger subtype (such as a lycanthrope or doppelganger) can revert to its natural form as a standard action.

i thought you can't polymorph into an outsider unless you are one anyway.

Great work, very handy thread !

@ aziraphale : As already noted in the apropriate section, you can actually polymorph into an outsider if you are one.

@ megaplex : You could add the "otherworldly" feat from (IIRC) player's guide to faerun in the 'outsider' section, it's a common trick
Ok, I've gone through most of my books and added the forms that looked good. I still need to add in the Alter Self section and I need more ideas for the Tips and Tricks section.
Feel free to use anything you want from the Alter Self thread that I made a while back. The link is in my sig.
Nice work. You may want to link to the Alter Self forms thread, or at-least have a look through it for some ideas.

Here's a trick, but it might be a bit durty for some people:
If you're an epic spellcaster, consider researching your own version of Origin Of Species: Achaierai, but instead creating a species of your own divising. Specifically: Create an insanely tough species which fits under the polymorph HD cap. Sure, the DCs are high, but there are ways round that.

Oh yeah, and you might want to create two of them so that it stops being a unique creature
Looking good!

Out of subject
Oh yeah, and you might want to create two of them so that it stops being a unique creature

Name them Adam and Eve and put them in a demiplane you created with Genesis that's filled with plants and animals. Tell them stories of how you created the world and how they're not supposed to eat the forbidden fruits. Then send your familiar (a tiny viper snake) to lure them. After they have eaten the forbidden fruit, scold them and banish them to another demiplane of yours, then watch them live and create a society of their own. That's some heavy reality TV right there! :D
The Udoroot from the XPH needs to be included, it allows psionic characters to manifest two psi-like abilities per round as an ex attack and manifestation of powers is a psi-like ability.
Anyone able to find some good Construct, Elemental or Undead forms for PAO?
Most of them seem sub-optimal....

read the section i quoted. the point i was making was that it was a bit redundant to polymorph into an outsider to gain martial weapon proficiency when then only way to polymorph into an outsider is if you are one to begin with and thus ALREADY have martial weapon proficiency.

so that specific part may confuse people into thinking they can polymorph into an outsider for that bonus.

You can polymorph into an outsider by first casting the spell Fiendform, which specifically makes you an outsider for the duration.

nice. i was basing it off of what the OP said. Didn't know about that little trick =p
You can polymorph into an outsider by first casting the spell Fiendform, which specifically makes you an outsider for the duration.

It works, but it's noteable that the same trick doesn't work with Alter Self. Not that I'm suggesting that anyone's implying that.

Alter Self only lets you change into a creature with the same type as your normal type, but it works with polymorph as it doesn't have the 'normal' restriction.
Draconic Might (SpC) is a huge boost to any combat form.

Not sure how the various "Bite of" spells work with polymorph, anyone care to explain what happens, for example, if you poly into Hydra and cast (still/silent as necessary) Bite of the Weretiger?
Use fiend form to grant yourself outsider status then PAO to make yourself a nalfeshnee (demon). Your base stats become 25 STR, 13 DEX, 27 CON, and 22 INT which is pretty spiffy for a wizard. Alternatively, become an ice devil/gelugon for 23 STR, 21 DEX, 23 CON, and 22 INT. If good is more your thing, become a planetar for 25 STR, 19 DEX, 20 CON, and 22 INT.

Plant Type
-- Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects)
-- Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning.
-- Not subject to critical hits or sneak attacks.

So does this mean that (not counting the shorter duration), polymorphing into a plant type is better than mind blank?

nnnnn

The Nalfeshnee is Huge, which can be a serious drawback, but I added a note under both Ice Devil and Planetar that they make good forms for PAO with an Int of 22.

I also added Fiendform and Holy/Infernal Transformation spells as a way to gain Outsider type.

Yes!

Lacks scrying protection.

PS. why is the Udoroot ignored? Sure it's cheesy, but this is polymorph we are talking about. The case is watertight as far as RAW is concerned.
Other forms for PAO:

Juvenile Bronze Dragon (15HD) - STR 19 DEX 10 CON 17 INT 18, 150' Fly (Poor)

Mercane (Manual of the Planes) - 7HD Outsider, STR 15 DEX 15 CON 16 INT 20

Actually the claim that Psionic Powers are Psi-like abilities is tennuous at best. Psi-like abilities are defined in D&D, noteably psi-likes don't cost any power points and are always manifest as if they had a number of power points equal to their manifester level spent on them. Now this is still useful to characters with real psi-likes (Phrenic characters, for example), or 'Psionics' entries.

Psionic Powers (like those posessed by characters with psionic classes, Psionic Mind Flayers, Unbodied, and similar) are something different, however, and I don't think the trick would work.

Tenuous in the sense of the book stating it explicitly?
Tenuous in the sense of the book stating it explicitly?

Quote?
[edit]Ack... Found it myself :P
Psi-Like Abilities (Ps)
The manifestation of powers by a psionic character is considered a psi-like ability, as is the manifestation of powers by creatures without a psionic class (creatures with the psionic subtype, also simply called psionic creatures). Usually, a psionic creature’s psi-like ability works just like the power of that name. A few psi-like abilities are unique; these are explained in the text where they are described.

Added two Dragon forms to the list.

Has anyone used some of the new Polymorph Subschool spells? Are they worth taking if Polymorph has been baned from your game?
Added two Dragon forms to the list.

Has anyone used some of the new Polymorph Subschool spells? Are they worth taking if Polymorph has been baned from your game?

Well, if your DM rules that Polymorph and similar don't have the polymorph subschool then they might still be useful to power the Minor Shapeshift reserve feat in games where Polymorph and similar are allowed.

Let's break one of them down:
Unyielding form of Inevitable Death
8th level, Swift cast, personal range, 1 round/level
Gives: Marut form, reduced spell-likes and adds temporary 50HP.
Red text is not given by the spell
Green Text is modified from the normal creature
Let's see:
Marut
[code]Size/Type: Large Construct (Extraplanar, Lawful)
Hit Dice: Normal HP +50 temp
Initiative: +1
Speed: 30 ft. in full plate armor (6 squares); base speed 40 ft.
Armor Class: 34 (-1 size, +1 Dex, +16 natural, +8 full plate armor), touch 10, flat-footed 33
Base Attack/Grapple: +11/+27
Attack: Slam +22 melee (2d6+12 plus 3d6 sonic or 3d6 electricity)
Full Attack: 2 slams +22 melee (2d6+12 plus 3d6 sonic or 3d6 electricity)
Space/Reach: 10 ft./10 ft.
Special Attacks: Fists of thunder and lightning, spell-like abilities
Special Qualities: Construct traits, damage reduction 15/chaotic, darkvision 60 ft., fast healing 10, low-light vision, spell resistance 25
Saves: Fort +7, Ref +6, Will +8
Abilities: Str 35, Dex 13, Con
Thanks Lilt!

That's a great breakdown of the spell
EDIT: My bad, the Alternate form doesn't give you the type and subtypes, which means Druid Wildshape doesn't, but Polymorph itself does, so all the above work.

In the first post:

Don't forget when you polymorph into a creature you turn into that type and subtype. Specific types have common natural abilities:

Based on the thread linked, and all errata for polymorph, you do NOT gain the type and subtypes of the new form, except Aquatic:

Tips and Tricks for Optimizing Alter Self and Polymorph.

Polymorph into a creature with the Giant or Outsider type to gain Martial Weapon proficiency.

Where does it say you get the monsters feats?

Remorhaz: Huge, NA +11, Str 26, Dex 13, Con 21; MM/SRD
Attack: Bite +13 melee (2d8+12)
Benefit: Burrow 20', Improved Grab (ex), Swallow Whole (Ex) Swallowed opponents take 2d8+12 damage plus 8d6 Fire damage per round

is my characters BAB lost too? so if I have a bab of +3 is this monster attack now +16
Where does it say you get the monsters feats?

It's all explained right here

is my characters BAB lost too? so if I have a bab of +3 is this monster attack now +16

According to the Alter Self spell (which Polymorph is based on):
Your class and level, hit points, alignment, base attack bonus, and base save bonuses all remain the same

So, you would have to recalculate the Attack based on your new Str score and your existing BAB.
It's all explained right here

actually it doesn't say anything on that link about aquiring feats. On part two, it says...
You have the physical qualities of the assumed form.

Physical qualities include natural size, mundane movement capabilities (such as burrowing, climbing, walking, swimming, and flight with wings. Physical qualities also include natural armor bonus, natural weapons (such as claws, bite, and so on), racial skill bonuses, racial bonus feats, and any gross physical qualities (presence or absence of wings, number of extremities, and so forth).

So you only get feats with the (B) next to them
Kind of surprised that the Jarilith from p 60 of Monster Manual II isn't listed in the Outsider entries. 10 hd, Large, 60 ft move, +14 natural armor, 2 claws 2d6 & 1 bite 2d8, improved grab, pounce, rake 2d6, frightful presence on charge or attack, str 35, Dex 29, Con 27. Tanar'ri traits, looks like a blood red lion with big teeth. This thing can get pretty nuts with the Bite of the ... spells from Spell Compendium (although you might actually want to cast the Bite spell before the 'morph spell so you can get the enhancement bonuses and feats without your claws and bite potentially losing damage dice.
one last question, if a monster has spell-like abilities, do you acquire those as part of a polymorph(other posts seem to think so)?
one last question, if a monster has spell-like abilities, do you acquire those as part of a polymorph(other posts seem to think so)?

No. You don't even get those with Shapechange.
