Question about attack rolls

Hey, we were playing our first game of 4th Edition last night, and we were wondering if when a power says it targets multiple creatures (such as sleep), do you roll one attack roll against the defense of all the defenders.
Or do you roll separate for every single opponent??

plz respond, we are in dire peril, we need to know!!
When using any ability which affect multiple creatures. You always roll an Attack Roll for each creature with a unified Damage Roll. In the Wizard's case for Sleep, he would roll once per creature.

A useful procedure which is employed by many people is, if you are doing an attack which damages multiple enemies, it is convenient to roll damage first, then roll attack rolls. The purpose of this is to allow the DM to note damage after every roll, besides memorizing which of the possible 25 creatures were just hit. (Area Burst 2 = 25 affected spaces).

Notes: If you incur a buff which allows you to gain a bonus to your next attack roll, this bonus gets applied to the first creature you are rolling for, not every creature within the area. Some DMs require this to be the creature who is in the center of an Area attack.

Hope this helped.

Minor quibble with this; you do always roll separate attack rolls, but you don't always roll a unified damage roll. When using an area or close ability which affects multiple creatures, you make multiple attack rolls and one damage roll. When using a melee or ranged ability which affects multiple creatures, you make an attack roll and a damage roll for each target.

It did. :D

Thanks a lot. We saved the discussion for today, but it's good to know for certain.

Page 271, PH. Both close attacks and area attacks are "Multiple Attack Rolls but One Damage Roll."
