Ironlightsaber Customs

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL043.jpg)

It's been over year since I posted any images of my custom figs so I figure it's about time to post some more. Some were posted before, but I included them so all my mods would appear in a single thread. I just got this camera and it really doesn't do the figs justice but I figure some pics are better than no pics at all. I hope you enjoy.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL001.jpg)

"Admiral Ackbar" was one of my first mods I ever made and I got 4 stitches in my thumb making him. The exacto knife went right through the plastic and down to the bone in my thumb. You might be able to tell which mods were made while I had stitches :P. I made "Bespin Han" as a stand-in fig for nimzomitch until he pulled a RS Han. It was made from a Naboo Soldier and is rather blocky because it was only meant to be a stand in piece. The "Dead Rebel" was made by cutting up a Rebel Trooper, repositioning the pieces and gluing them back to the base.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL002.jpg)

These two E-Web Blasters are not mods but were made from scratch. I used plastic pieces left over from models, bits of metal, half of a Gonk Power Droid and some Sculpey to create them. I also made stat cards for it and other items that I hope to post for others to use. The stats and rules cards are from the Ultimate Mission books, except the rules on jumping which is a mix of all the different UM rules cleaned up into one.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL003.jpg)

Here are some modded "Scout Troopers-Running Toward the Fight". I just cut them at the waist, rotated them a little, glued it and then sculpted the waist to look correct. The arms were cut and pinned as well. The "Dead Trooper" fig was made like the above "Dead Rebel".

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL004.jpg)

These are my modded Imperial Officers-"Death Star Officer" was made from an Imperial Officer body with a Rebel Trooper head. "Imperial Officer-Being Choked" was made the body of the above mentioned Rebel Trooper with an Imperial Officer's head. "Imperial Officer-At Attention" was made from Tarkin's body with an Imperial officer's head. Tarkin's head was used for a different mod that you'll see later on.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL005.jpg)

This is a "Twi'lik Sith" with a couple of droid friends from the Death Star. The body of the "Twi'lik Sith" was made from a Klatooninian Enforcer with the head of a Twi'lik Scoundrel. I gave him two lightsabers and Sith tattoos on his lekku to add some personality. "The Death Star Droid" is just an R2 repainted to look like the droid found on the Second DeathStar and the "Interrogation Droid" was made completely from Sculpey. I included the front of the stat card I made for reference.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL006.jpg)

Here's my "Darth Vader-Who's Your Daddy?". The fig was made from RS Darth Vader-Dark Jedi. The scene it's from is still one of the best in all movies. I know that his lightsaber was off when he held his hand out to Luke but I decided to keep it on for the mini.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL007.jpg)

These are a couple of modded Tuskens. The two with staffs were cut, adjusted, pinned and sculpted into different poses. The Tusken on the Bantha and the Tusken on the left were cut at the waist and switched. I've seen that other people have done this switch as well; it's quite simple to do and I highly recommend it.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL008.jpg)

The "Oola-Doomed Dancer" was a Twi'lek Bodygaurd that was completely cut apart at all the joints, pinned and readjusted. I used the staff for the chain and positioned it to look like Jabba was pulling on it. "Bib Fortuna" was a Twi'lek Scoundrel and I hope that WOTC will make one with a CE that improves Jabba. "Boba Fett" was a CS Clone Trooper that I made as a stand-in until I finally got one (I ended up having to buy it).

its funny to see like some of your modifications actualy were made, like the scout trooper in A&E.

did they pay you to use your ideas? :D

No they didn't and I don't know if who ever sculpt them even so my custom. If they did and based the A&E scout on mine that is pretty cool. I saw that the main page has a preview of the Clone Wars set and that there is a Yoda on Kybuck. I wonder if they got that idea from adliv666 or if it is just such a popular version of Yoda that it was just a matter of time. I do like the fact that the new Greivous looks somewhat like the open armed version I did a couple of years back.

Sorry for the lack of updates but I have been extremely busy. Besides working on S3 puzzles with klecser, I have been working on getting some improvements done on my house and I mean major improvements. I'm almost done with them and hope to get some new customs up to this thread soon.

Well, we know Rob and the others read the general board for what minis we want, it's not a far stretch thinking that they may read the customs board for ideas on stats and sculpts. We had a full thread devoted to this on the original Customs Database, and there were alot of examples of abilities similar to those of old customs showing up on new minis

Team-mando.gif
"I swear by the soul I don't have, I am going to kill you."
"You can run, but you'll only die tired."
Boba Fett

How did you do all those customs? I tried making some but i just got paint everywhere. :P
How did you do all those customs? I tried making some but i just got paint everywhere. :P

I started painting old school D&D minis when I was around twelve years old and just kept at it. I also got paint everywhere when I first started (nd still do) but the more I painted and customized it the better I got. Check out the customizing articles in my sig for step by step instructions on how to get started, including tips on how to paint.

Eruletho--Well, we know Rob and the others read the general board for what minis we want, it's not a far stretch thinking that they may read the customs board for ideas on stats and sculpts.

I guess anything is possible. They did make a Yoda on Kybuck after adliv did and saved me the trouble of making my own (although I might customize it if I get my hands on a second one-the saber is too long and I want to make Yoda standing on the saddle like in the cartoon :D ).

The big news is that today I had the final inspection which brings an end to the long period of getting repairs done to my house that has taken up all of my free time.

In the past few months, with the help of friends and contractors, I have torn down a foot and half retaining wall, removed 24 cubic yards of clay soil and replaced it with a three foot high retaining wall, had a new roof and gutters put on my house and garage, updated the electrical work and plumbing, knocked out an old shelving space, sealed the entire basement with three coats of sealant followed by having my foundation fixed and replaced all the old windows in the house.

Plus this Halloween was our tenth year wedding anniversary and my wife and I wanted to host a huge party for all of our friends and family. Besides getting the band, food, decorations and costumes ready beforehand, we had to deal with the near disaster of having over 200 32" TVs being stored in the hall we rented removed just hours before the event.

But it all worked out in the end and I finally dressed as my all-time favorite Star Wars character for the first time in my life and my wife was gracious enough to go as Princess Leia.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/Halloween%202008/Halloween2008017.jpg)

Plus there was the added surprise at the party of Hothie proposing to Lady Hothie and her accepting which made a great event that much better.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/Halloween%202008/028.jpg)

Add on top of that just being busy at work, keeping up with a super active two and a half year old and making S3 puzzles with klecser for the main web site and I was left with no free time. I was so busy that I didn't even get to attend a SWM game for nearly seven months and it has only been this past month that I have been able to attend tourneys with any regularity.

But the good news is I have dusted off my customizing tool box and box of figs to cut up and hope to have some new customs in the next couple of weeks. :evillaugh As a bonus our old camera has finally quit on us and we plan on picking up a better camera later this week, so my pictures should be much, much better.

And I have been collecting items and making new design plans for a new and improved Battle of Hoth event and the final chapter of the Nexus Event trilogy (it looks like the link to the second event has broken so I'll probably repost those pics to refresh the players' memory before the third event happens). Hopefully I will be running both events this next upcoming year.

First though I plan on finishing the customs I started waaaaaay back in May. I wouldn't mind making an Adult Kryat Dragon like others have on these boards. Before that I think I will look over all the figs made my WOTC and my customs so far and see what is missing that I haven't done yet and that I think that WOTC won't be making anytime soon and go from there. If any one has suggestions feel free to send me a PM.

Can't wait to see you back in action.
Can't wait to see more of your stuff when you get around to it. Will we ever see another customs instructions on the Wizards site? You totally should have convinced your son (son?) to go as an ewok! Looks like he went as Bob the builder instead?
Can't wait to see more of your stuff when you get around to it. Will we ever see another customs instructions on the Wizards site?

Got the new camera and worked on figuring it out this holiday weekend. Looked over all the customs I have started and hope to work on some tonight!!!

The custom series covered most everything needed for beginners to get started. I wanted to cover the basics and build it to the point of making complex customs and I think i the series did that. I would be happy to do more but I don't think it will be happening anytime soon, if at all. Most players of the game do not customize so the series appealed to a small group within the larger community.

If I did get the chance to continue the series I think I would want to cover how to make large scale 3-D terrain (like how to make a gridded Hoth set-up) and more advance techniques to customizing.

You totally should have convinced your son (son?) to go as an ewok! Looks like he went as Bob the builder instead?

That is our son and he was Bob the Builder⁚ (he's a HUGE fan). He has a hard hat for that costume but it's not in that picture. We thought about dressing him as an Ewok but as much as he runs around he would have gotten too warm for comfort. We also thought that an R2-D2 costume would have been perfect but since this was such a huge bash we thought he would like to go as his favorite character and that it would be more fun for him that way.

That right there is talent. Plain and simple.
If I did get the chance to continue the series I think I would want to cover how to make large scale 3-D terrain (like how to make a gridded Hoth set-up) and more advance techniques to customizing.

That would rock! I really want to make a 3D emperor's throne room! I've been a little too busy thus far but not a day goes by that I don't at least think about it.
Thanks for all you've done ILS. Klecser pointed out the fact that your custom thread has over 30,000 views. Being the Math nerd that I am, have done the calculations:

An average daily viewing of just over 28 people
which means (no pun intended) more than 1 person per hour has viewed your thread every hour SINCE ITS INCEPTION. Gonna post that on the hall of fame thread where klecser brought it to my attention. Thought you might like to know, too.

Wow, over 30,000 views!!!! Thank you to everyone who has taken time to view my thread.

As long promised I have finally been able to work on some customs, figure out the new camera and take some pics. First up are customs of my RPG character, Sandtrooper and Asajj Ventress.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/100_0049.jpg)

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/100_0051.jpg)

The RPG character was made from the body of a Rodian, RS Han Solo head and green stuff for the hair. For the Sandtrooper I removed the oversized head and used a left-over head of a clone trooper, trimmed to size and pinned in place. The Ventress is a combination of the head and lower half of the CS Ventress with the torso and arms of Komari Vosa, all pinned together. Then I filled the gaps and painted.

Here's a repose of Shado Vao.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/100_0052.jpg)

The original fig is on the right. I fixed the neck & reposed the head as well as re-angled the entire fig. I switched the lightsaber to his correct hand and in the future I might add another blade so he is carrying his double ended lightsaber.

Since I had the camera out I decided to take a couple of pics of some past customs to help show some of the details and the difference that a good camera can make.

The Ventress is a combination of the head and lower half of the CS Ventress with the torso and arms of Komari Vosa, all pinned together. Then I filled the gaps and painted.

She is quite easy to make. The hardest part is pinning the head to the neck but you can just glue that if you want. She was made from pieces I got from Hothie and his orphan list.

I very interested the Carth Onasi miniature how did you do that one?

Carth is a Rodian Mercenary body with a Corellian Pirate's head. The parts were cut and refitted in a new pose. I added a second holster and the feet of an ASP-7 droid to the tops of the guns. The paint detail on the jacket is what really sets this piece up.

Post #246 has a list of the the pieces used to create the rest of this set as well.

Love the Basilisk
Looooooooooooooooooooooove the Mission! She's one of my favorite characters from the series. I can tell that the body and swords are frome the dark side enforcer, but where did the head come from?
I thought I would get this up as a Christmas present to everyone. Hope you like it. ;)

Making customs can sometimes be interesting in the way that they come together and these three are proof of that. Each one had a different route in the way they were created. I thought I would share that process with all of you.

First up we have the "Unintended Custom"--

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/100_0072.jpg)
IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/100_0073.jpg)

This "Leia Revealed" custom is an example of something that almost made itself.

I had the Boushh fig for a while and had just cut off the helmet for a different fig I'm still working on and set the it aside. Then while looking through the extra heads to use on one of the below customs I came across the Jedi Padawan head from CotF. I held it up to the body of Boush and it looked perfect for Leia's head.

It took a minute to figure out the best way to pose it, a couple of seconds to glue it in place and then I set it aside. Later when I was painting other customs I took a couple of minutes to just repaint the hair to make it look even more like Leia. That was it.

Second, we have the "It Was More Involved Than Expected"--

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/100_0078.jpg)
IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/100_0077.jpg)

The "Royal Guards at Attention" is an example of a custom that took longer to create than I had imagine it would. When I first saw the Emperor's Shadow Guard from FU I knew that I wanted to do a repaint. I had made a pair before using the RS Royal Guards but hated the outcome so much that I never bothered to even post them here.

It took awhile to acquire the two extra figs and then I got too busy to work on customs over the summer so they sat in my custom box. I wanted to have their helmets be shiny and it took longer to get an clear acrylic gloss paint. Finally I started to do the repaint and because of the black color of the original it took several coats to get the right color of the blood red and then the washings to get the fold detail was tricky as well. Getting the staffs to look straight proved difficult as well but the end result was well worth it.

So even though it was a simple repaint it was anything but simple. I'm still getting used to this new camera so the shiny helmet compared to the matte cloak doesn't stand out as well as in real life but I think you get the idea. I think these two will look great if the next set has the EMperor on the throne like the box art is suggesting.

And lastly we have a "Custom That Became More"--

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/100_0080.jpg)

This "Gamorrean Headhunter" is an example of a custom that the end product was nothing like I had in mind when I started. I had an extra Gamorrean Guard from A&E in my custom box and started off just doing a repose--moved the head, the arms, removed the axe and then added a blaster. I threw it back in my customs box and then I got busy with all the house fixes so it just sat in there with the rest of my stuff.

When I started to customize again I pulled him out and wondered what to do with him. I put him on a circle base and using greenstuff decided to give him a fur cloak that would enhance the dynamic of his pose. Liking what the cloak had done I thought it would be better if he was swinging something but I didn't want to put the axe back in his hand. I found this mace on a D&D fig and it looked great.

I realized that all the attention drew the eye completely to the right so I wanted to balance the look again. After awhile the idea of having a skull from a large animal in place of the shoulder armor occurred to me. Using some more greenstuff I sculpted a quick skull and it helped to balance the look and pose once again.

I gave him a paint touch up where needed along with some washes. When I was done I looked him over and thought he looked pretty good but wanted to really push the idea. While looking in my spare parts I realized that I have a lot of cut off heads and decided to add them to his back. I painted some kite string black and super glued it so it looked like they were strapped to his back. The simple repose I had in mind when I started instead snowballed into something completely unexpected.

I hope that you enjoyed that look into the the process and that everyone has a great holiday and an awesome new year!!!

Thanks! Again from post #246:

Mission is Dark Side Enforcer and again the parts were cut and refitted in a new pose. The head tails were handmade from Scupty.

Wow. Things never seem to slow down. Still I have tried to get in some customizing.

With the release of IE I can finally display my Royal Guards the way they were meant to be.....

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/EmperoronDesk.jpg)

That's from the corner of my desk at my day job. The tips of the staffs got a little bent on the way in to my office but they should look perfect in a couple of hours.

Enough old stuff, onto the new stuff.....

The little free time that I have had lately I have been spending working on and running a Star Wars Saga RPG game and it has been a blast. I have a great group of players and I have really been putting a lot into it from the story to the villains to locations to ships and everything involved. Some of the customs I have made lately I haven't posted incase the players were to view this thread before a game and I didn't want the surprises ruined.

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/Transport1.jpg)
    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/Transport2.jpg)

This was a Hoth Transport that I modified for their first adventure. They had to escape a city on Taanab and this was the only thing they could find. I repainted the whole thing black and went with a blue and gold color scheme. I added some weapons from an Uggernaught and some transfer decals that I had left over from the Space Hulk set I painted last year at this time. I weathered it up and it worked great during the big chase scene that took place.

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/GamorreanCheiftess.jpg)

In their fourth adventure they had to do a dirty job for a Hutt and retrieve some Gamoreans who were suppose to show up to work for the crime lord but had been kidnapped by another tribe before they could be transported. It was a great excuse to use the Headhunter but I had to have a big baddie at the end and created this lovely lady for that purpose.

I have some more but they will have to wait until after a couple future games. In the meantime here is the progress on VSA Sith Lord.....

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/SAInProgress.jpg)

The prep work is almost finished. Just need to add a few more details like the design at the top of the lightsaber handle and that cyborg-thing that pops out of his right forearm. After that I can paint it.

In other news, I just finished the 13th article for the customizing series on the official homepage and it should be up soon. I'm not sure if this will lead to another part in the series but keep your eyes open for it.

Wow, those look great. I especially like the converted transport. When do you think that VSA custom will be finished, it already looks pretty awesome! If you don't mind my asking, what did you use for the helmet, I haven't been able to find anything to use for the "breather" piece. Keep up the good work.
