Ironlightsaber Customs

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL043.jpg)

It's been over year since I posted any images of my custom figs so I figure it's about time to post some more. Some were posted before, but I included them so all my mods would appear in a single thread. I just got this camera and it really doesn't do the figs justice but I figure some pics are better than no pics at all. I hope you enjoy.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL001.jpg)

"Admiral Ackbar" was one of my first mods I ever made and I got 4 stitches in my thumb making him. The exacto knife went right through the plastic and down to the bone in my thumb. You might be able to tell which mods were made while I had stitches :P. I made "Bespin Han" as a stand-in fig for nimzomitch until he pulled a RS Han. It was made from a Naboo Soldier and is rather blocky because it was only meant to be a stand in piece. The "Dead Rebel" was made by cutting up a Rebel Trooper, repositioning the pieces and gluing them back to the base.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL002.jpg)

These two E-Web Blasters are not mods but were made from scratch. I used plastic pieces left over from models, bits of metal, half of a Gonk Power Droid and some Sculpey to create them. I also made stat cards for it and other items that I hope to post for others to use. The stats and rules cards are from the Ultimate Mission books, except the rules on jumping which is a mix of all the different UM rules cleaned up into one.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL003.jpg)

Here are some modded "Scout Troopers-Running Toward the Fight". I just cut them at the waist, rotated them a little, glued it and then sculpted the waist to look correct. The arms were cut and pinned as well. The "Dead Trooper" fig was made like the above "Dead Rebel".

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL004.jpg)

These are my modded Imperial Officers-"Death Star Officer" was made from an Imperial Officer body with a Rebel Trooper head. "Imperial Officer-Being Choked" was made the body of the above mentioned Rebel Trooper with an Imperial Officer's head. "Imperial Officer-At Attention" was made from Tarkin's body with an Imperial officer's head. Tarkin's head was used for a different mod that you'll see later on.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL005.jpg)

This is a "Twi'lik Sith" with a couple of droid friends from the Death Star. The body of the "Twi'lik Sith" was made from a Klatooninian Enforcer with the head of a Twi'lik Scoundrel. I gave him two lightsabers and Sith tattoos on his lekku to add some personality. "The Death Star Droid" is just an R2 repainted to look like the droid found on the Second DeathStar and the "Interrogation Droid" was made completely from Sculpey. I included the front of the stat card I made for reference.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL006.jpg)

Here's my "Darth Vader-Who's Your Daddy?". The fig was made from RS Darth Vader-Dark Jedi. The scene it's from is still one of the best in all movies. I know that his lightsaber was off when he held his hand out to Luke but I decided to keep it on for the mini.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL007.jpg)

These are a couple of modded Tuskens. The two with staffs were cut, adjusted, pinned and sculpted into different poses. The Tusken on the Bantha and the Tusken on the left were cut at the waist and switched. I've seen that other people have done this switch as well; it's quite simple to do and I highly recommend it.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL008.jpg)

The "Oola-Doomed Dancer" was a Twi'lek Bodygaurd that was completely cut apart at all the joints, pinned and readjusted. I used the staff for the chain and positioned it to look like Jabba was pulling on it. "Bib Fortuna" was a Twi'lek Scoundrel and I hope that WOTC will make one with a CE that improves Jabba. "Boba Fett" was a CS Clone Trooper that I made as a stand-in until I finally got one (I ended up having to buy it).

I really like that Captain Panaka. I was dissapointed that they never made any Naboo Royal Guards because I always thought they were the coolest of the Naboo forces.

Also the detail on that Obi Wan Kenobi is just plain amazing. It looks awsome!
A friend of mine took some professional images for a project and some images are not being used so I thought I would share them. Thanks again Dustin, they look great.

Good, very good. I agree, very professional shots.

How do you make those jet-streams for Jango and Durge?
How do you make those jet-streams for Jango and Durge?

He just cut them off Boba. Actually, I have no idea but it looks pretty cool.
Those are amazing. Seriously, I'm stunned. Keep up the good work!

Impressive. Most impressive.
ill give you a dollar and a high five for the yoda
How do you make those jet-streams for Jango and Durge?

He used wire for support and built up contour putty or green stuff.

Nice job on these, ILS!
wow the first pictures don't do those miniatures justice. Hey iron lighsaber, how do you get that kinda accuracy paint-wise?
I just mix in small amounts and I use that color in other areas of the same color to make the color difference less noticable. Some times I completely repaint areas or entire figs.

The blast was made from wire supports and contour putty from a tube. It comes out like tooth paste so it is easy to make the "billowy" look.

I am going to be making a custom mini for the first place winner of the Nexus SWM tournament May 20 and 21 in Lincoln NE.

I've almost finished my Grievous and hope to post images of it soon. I've started on a Durge on Speeder to go with my Obi on Speeder and hope to show some starting images as well.

Here's the second half of how I made a Grievous custom. The first half is located on the previous page.

So after drilling with a hand drill small holes on the cut surfaces I put a pin in and glued the pieces back in to the shape I wanted them in. This is not easy and having a good idea of pose and knowing how to cut the fig apart into the shapes you need is important. I then filled any gaps with contour putty.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/HPIM0603.jpg)

I wanted to make a cape for him. An easy way to make a cape is by rolling some Sculpey flat and cut into the shape of a cape. Next, roll some Sculpey into a thin snake and put it branching out from the neck. Smooth the snake to the flat shape with your finger and then bend it into a slight curve to give it shape and bake.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/HPIM0604.jpg)

I made my cape by rolling a very thin sheet of Sculpey and cutting out a shape cape. Then I made a small frame from a balled up piece of aluminum foil of the negative shape beneth the cape to fit the flow of the pose. I glued it on right after removing it from the oven while the Sculpey was still somewhat soft.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/HPIM0605.jpg)

After the cape dried I very carefully painted it and touched up the paint on the figure.

Here's a view from the top.

You put WOTC to shame...

Edit: How much would it cost you to make me one?
I seriously have no words to express how sweet that Grievous is. I want to cry or write a love song or something.

I consider myself lucky to call Ironlightsaber my friend IRL for many reasons. One of which is the exposure that he gives me to his art.

Keep it coming!

ooo man that was superb .. its the nicest customs I've ever seen and I'm willing to trade Bagged CS Darth Maul for it ...

Your the greatest man ... keep it up :D :D

Did you do the art on the stat card? If so, that is a good sketch.

Yes he did. He often sketches a plan before modding, especially on figs that require cutting up a very rare.

Then, he does a high quality final sketch for the card...
I never thought that making changes could be so interesting. Now of course i have to try. Thanks for the ideas, you get all the credit. unless of course they look really awful. then i will take the blame

    GREAT JOB!!!!!!
Yeah I second the great job! VERY inspiring, Go Grevious!

    ~ S
That Greivous is, like, awesome. I need... :D
    Grevious is awe inspiring...

The only thing missing is some small pockets on the inside of the cape with a small collection of lightsabers
    Iron that is awsome!!!!

    Perfect as usual

You are the Master and I am only a padawan in training.

What kinda of Camera do you use to get such clear close up photos?
What should I look for in buing one?
Freakin' sweet. You should make more Acklays and sell them. Vast improvement over the original pose! The rest are great too. Cool photos too. I've never seen that good of quality of shots when it comes to such small things.

I wanna see some close ups of your Sith Witch Queen and the Adept leader. They and their reposed followers rock.
adliv666- I wouldn't even know what to charge. If I do sell any of my customs I would probably use e-bay because it just seems the most fair. If I ever do decide to part with any of my customs I will let everyone know on this thread.

Diseased Vermin-That is a great idea, I am going to have to do that if possible. Thanks.

DarthMoose74-My friend is a professional photographer, and I can get you in touch with him if you want him to take images of your customs.

If you are looking to buy a good digital camera in a decent price range and want to use it for minis as well, I suggest a 5 megapixal camera and make sure the zoom is a lens zoom and not a digital zoom. Take a mini with you to the store and try out the camera, ask questions of the sells people and use the web to find unbiased reviews.

Here's what I'm currently working on.

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/HPIM0841.jpg)

They are painted Droid Fighters from the AMT "Snapfast" model kit that I am making into minis. The scale is 1:48 which is very close to the scale of SWM. And the other big new project I'm working on is a Durge on Speeder to go up against the Obi on Speeder. This one is also going to be based on a pose from the cartoon with a couple of changes to the bike to incorporate some of the elements from the action figure's bike.

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/HPIM0842.jpg)

Thank you everyone. The response to this thread and the well wishes for my new son are most appreciated and quite over whelming. I bet that this little guy is going to be taking up quite a bit of my SWM free time but I'm going to get in as much as I can.

wow, you are finally working on Durge.

I can't wait to see it in person.
In Photoshop, copy the image you want to use and paste it into the card template. It will be on a separate layer and by using the magic wand tool you can select out sections of the background and then delete it.

You might have to re-size your image to fit on the card. Before you copy and paste it you can covert it to a gray scale format. This will help make it look more like the official cards.

Use the art from the front and just scale it down for the back. Keep text as it's own layer or even better set up a template with text blocks in set positions so you don't have to re-align text every time you make a card.

The best advice I have is to get to know Photoshop or what ever art program you use. Good custom cards take longer to make than custom figs. By using your art programs more and more you will get quicker at making cards.

Here's an image of the Droid Starfighters mounted on hand-made bases. If I ever remake these I think I'll make a couple in the "walking" position. Any suggestions on what kind of stats and abilities these should have or does any one know if a card has already been made for them?

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/HPIM0859.jpg)

Between diapers I was able to finish "Durge on Speeder Bike". Durge and the bike were completely taken apart and repositioned. The skull and jaw bones were made from Sculpey and the lightning effect is removable. I have to come up with stats for him to face off against my "Gen. Obi on Speeder".

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/HPIM0910.jpg)

I think that maybe the electrolance should have the ability to ignore Damage Reduction, maybe negate molecular shields while adjacent and cause triple damage on rolls of 20 against droids, mounted weapons and figures huge size and larger.

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/HPIM0907.jpg)

He does easily destroy a lot of tanks on his speeder and it would be nice to have a figure who can help assist taking down Viper droids. I'll try to get Dustin to take a better quality image, but that might be a while.

    good job dude.

    Wonderful as always ironlightsaber!

By "negate molecular shields" do you mean negate it for figures OTHER than Durge as well? I assume that is what you mean given that standing next to a fig with Molecular Shields technically always "negates" it...

Maybe we can talk about the stats this Sat.
Fantastic job on the Grievous ironlightsaber! Even more impressive than the figure is the sketch on the front of the stat card!

Practice makes perfect and you can definately see that from your minis, they continue to improve, you seem to top yourself with each one you do and in so doing motivate and inspire others.

    Thanks for your posts!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
It's not enough that you succeed, others must fail!!! Miniatures' collection Rebel Storm through Jedi Academy complete! Galaxy at War 0/40 Dark Times 0/40 Masters of the Force 0/40
Very nice. I love Durge. I did a repaint on my Greivous but nothing like that. I agree w/ Scotty Speed, you truely topped yourself. Great works and a thumbs up from papi!
    klecser

Yeah. If a Viper goes, Durge could speed up and base it. For the rest of that round and until the Viper moved away, attackers on Durge's side could attack without fear of being hit by their own shots.

Imagine it as if the lance's current disrupts the shield's current and basically grounds it out.

There's a couple drawbacks to this ability. There is only one character so far that has Molecular Shields. Also by basing the Viper Durge will most likely be the focus of all the attacks until he is dead or retreats.

Are you waiting until the last second, to enter the "ccc"? With all of your great customs, it's hard to believe you won't enter. I'm still hopeful (& waiting).

More to come soon! Including a new faction! And a character from a new COTF faction.
Thanks to Ironlightsaber for the templates & some photshop help.
You are a master customizer! Everyone needs to view your figs!
Started to play test the stats for Yoda-Great Warrior, G.Grievous-Hunter of Jedi, DarkTrooper Commander and Poggle the Lesser (thanks Nimzomitch and Klescer). Hope to put up the cards soon, maybe one round more of testing.

Have continued to work on custom cards and house rules for a Hoth battle. Also working with Scruffy Nerf Herder on an unusual SWM game for Nexus. Between diapers. I have been putting together 3D wall of Magic Elli's Cloud City 2. Hope to post pictures soon.

Sorry for the lack of an update but I've been a little busy play testing custom stats, getting things ready for a massive Hoth battle and a SWM special event at NEXUS with Scruffy, working on S3 puzzles with Klecser and of course with bottles and diapers.

I have been working on the 3D model of Cloud City by Magic Eli and more custom stat cards. Both take lot of time and I will post images of them soon. I hope to get back to customizing minis very soon.

In the mean time my friend Dustin stopped by to take pictures of the baby and I got him to take a few of Durge on his bike so you could see the details.
