Ironlightsaber Customs

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL043.jpg)

It's been over year since I posted any images of my custom figs so I figure it's about time to post some more. Some were posted before, but I included them so all my mods would appear in a single thread. I just got this camera and it really doesn't do the figs justice but I figure some pics are better than no pics at all. I hope you enjoy.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL001.jpg)

"Admiral Ackbar" was one of my first mods I ever made and I got 4 stitches in my thumb making him. The exacto knife went right through the plastic and down to the bone in my thumb. You might be able to tell which mods were made while I had stitches :P. I made "Bespin Han" as a stand-in fig for nimzomitch until he pulled a RS Han. It was made from a Naboo Soldier and is rather blocky because it was only meant to be a stand in piece. The "Dead Rebel" was made by cutting up a Rebel Trooper, repositioning the pieces and gluing them back to the base.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL002.jpg)

These two E-Web Blasters are not mods but were made from scratch. I used plastic pieces left over from models, bits of metal, half of a Gonk Power Droid and some Sculpey to create them. I also made stat cards for it and other items that I hope to post for others to use. The stats and rules cards are from the Ultimate Mission books, except the rules on jumping which is a mix of all the different UM rules cleaned up into one.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL003.jpg)

Here are some modded "Scout Troopers-Running Toward the Fight". I just cut them at the waist, rotated them a little, glued it and then sculpted the waist to look correct. The arms were cut and pinned as well. The "Dead Trooper" fig was made like the above "Dead Rebel".

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL004.jpg)

These are my modded Imperial Officers-"Death Star Officer" was made from an Imperial Officer body with a Rebel Trooper head. "Imperial Officer-Being Choked" was made the body of the above mentioned Rebel Trooper with an Imperial Officer's head. "Imperial Officer-At Attention" was made from Tarkin's body with an Imperial officer's head. Tarkin's head was used for a different mod that you'll see later on.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL005.jpg)

This is a "Twi'lik Sith" with a couple of droid friends from the Death Star. The body of the "Twi'lik Sith" was made from a Klatooninian Enforcer with the head of a Twi'lik Scoundrel. I gave him two lightsabers and Sith tattoos on his lekku to add some personality. "The Death Star Droid" is just an R2 repainted to look like the droid found on the Second DeathStar and the "Interrogation Droid" was made completely from Sculpey. I included the front of the stat card I made for reference.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL006.jpg)

Here's my "Darth Vader-Who's Your Daddy?". The fig was made from RS Darth Vader-Dark Jedi. The scene it's from is still one of the best in all movies. I know that his lightsaber was off when he held his hand out to Luke but I decided to keep it on for the mini.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL007.jpg)

These are a couple of modded Tuskens. The two with staffs were cut, adjusted, pinned and sculpted into different poses. The Tusken on the Bantha and the Tusken on the left were cut at the waist and switched. I've seen that other people have done this switch as well; it's quite simple to do and I highly recommend it.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL008.jpg)

The "Oola-Doomed Dancer" was a Twi'lek Bodygaurd that was completely cut apart at all the joints, pinned and readjusted. I used the staff for the chain and positioned it to look like Jabba was pulling on it. "Bib Fortuna" was a Twi'lek Scoundrel and I hope that WOTC will make one with a CE that improves Jabba. "Boba Fett" was a CS Clone Trooper that I made as a stand-in until I finally got one (I ended up having to buy it).

Here's a couple of custom ARC Troopers. These guys were really hard to pull. I didn't get nearly the amount that I would have liked so I made some. The skirts are made from Sculpey that was molded to fit, baked and then super glued on and painted. The bodies are just regular CS Clone Troopers.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL010.jpg)

The "Destroyed Droid" was easy to make and fun to use. The "Slashed Droid" is made from cutting and pinning a regular Security droid and the slash effect is plasic from the packaging of a minature that was cut in a sharp triangle shape and glued to the figure. The BDO is modded from the orginal fig and made by cutting, pinning and glueing. The STAP was cut and mounted on a clear plastic rod to make it look like it is flying and not crashing like the orginal. It is a simple mod that really helps the fig look like the ones in the movie.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL011.jpg)

Even though I think that Geonosians need a commander (Poggle the Lesser maybe?) with a good CE (maybe he could grant them +2 attack and the Swarm ablity) I still think that they are cool characters. The Geonosian Overseer and Soldiers were modded from the orginals, but made to look like they are flying. I cut the wings apart and pinned them to the back in a spread to make them look like they are flapping. The Drone has just been cut and pinned in a new pose to make it a little more dynamic. The "Dead Geonosian" was made like the other dead fig above.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL012.jpg)

Dark Side Acolytes have been cut, pinned and sculted with contour putty into new poses. For my Dark Side flunkies I like making one look like the leader of the group, so for this group I made one that is just standing to set her apart from the others. I might paint her to really make her stand out, I'm not sure yet. I had to use alot of contour putty to fill the gaps created when I made her stand up right but the effect was worth it.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL013.jpg)

After the cool Boba Fett fig from Rebel Storm set I was kind of let down by the Clone Strike Jango Fett. I mean, the guy doesn't even have a neck. So here is my mod. I cut, pinned and reposioned almost every joint on him. I added a neck and then I made him flying. A nickel super glued to the bottom to keep him from being top heavy. nimzomitch has also made several of these, which look sweet as well.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL014.jpg)

Like the Jango fig I was a little let down by the Druge fig. I think he looks like he is falling over backwards or is trying to run away. So I made the one standing on the dead clone trooper and posted it last year.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL015.jpg)

Then I wanted to make one based as closly to the orginal pose as possible but have him upright and flying. Plus I wanted to position him and sculpt the rocket exhast so it make sense for him to be on a large base. I had to really work to get the back pack to sit on his back at the correct angle and cutting his head off to add a neck was a bit tricky!

Back during the time of the orginal trilogies Marvel comics was one of the very few places you could get a fix for new Star Wars material. I loved the Valance story and thought it was great that WOTC made them into a group of scenarios available for free on the website called "The Hunt Within"(even as broken as they are). I have made cards for all the characters and a Batha herd tile that I hope to post for everyone's use soon. Maybe lingster (great map work btw and thanks for sharing them) or someone else could make somemaps to go with those scenarios.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL016.jpg)

Valance was made from Stormtrooper body and Tarkin's head. I made the pose as close to the one on the famous cover. The big gun was scratch built. I painted the left side of his face to show the cyborg skull but unfortuanlty you can't really see the glowing red eye.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL017.jpg)

The "Valance-Stormtrooper Officer" is posed to look like he is seeing the approaching bombers that will blow him up. Since his lackeys are not really based on any Star Wars creatures I just let my imagination run wild. Slssk is a modded Rodian Mercenary based on the notes in the scenario. Fud and Dafi (Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck references possibly?) in the comic resemble nothing like the creatures in the Star Wars universe so I made them Klatooninian brothers. I wanted Fud to look like he was a fan of Spawn and Dafi is kind of a space pirate complete with eye patch and cigar (because smoking is just daffy :P).

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL018.jpg)

Can't have bad guys with out the good, so here's Jaxxon and crew. This is the second Jimm Doshun I made. It has the body of Luke Skywalker, Rebel and the head of a Devaronian Soldier. Amaiza Foxtrain is a Twi'lek Bodyguard that has been carefully cut, angled and pinned. Jaxxon is a Duros Mercenary with tow pieces of cut plactic pinned in place. Their cards will hopefully will be posted soon.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL019.jpg)

I didn't like the kicking-to-the-side thing that the Devaronian Bounty Hunter from CS was doing so I made one standing and looking around a corner. The Nikto Soldier from the same set looks like he might be surrendering so I made one actually holding his gun. In a universe filled with vibro melee weapons why do alot of the lacky figs carry knives? Here's a Gran Raider I modded in a more dynamic pose and wielding a virbo axe.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL020.jpg)

A cool minor EU villian is Sora Bulq who helped Mace develop the Vaapad style of lightsaber fighting. His head is from Weequay Mercenary and I made his robes from contour putty and Sculpey. TC-14 is a modded and painted C-3PO. This mod might be changed to a "C-3PO on Chewie's Back" soon . Also shown here is a growling wookiee which was made from a Wookiee Soldier that was cut apart, angled and pinned together.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL021.jpg)

"Queen Sith Witch" is just Nightsister Sith Witch whose saber arm was cut, angled and pinned into position. I did a repaint with a lot of dry brushing to make it seem like her costume was designed on a flame motif. "Mara Jade, Emperor's Hand" makes a good leader of the Dark Side Adepts. The pose and repaint help set her apart from the pack.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL022.jpg)

Here are some Jedi to fight all the baddies. The first one is a modded Twi'lek Bodyguard (again). The second is Darth Maul's "good twin" who was made from a RS Jedi Knight and the head of a Zabrak Fringer. The last one is a modded Jedi Guardian who was made to look human.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL023.jpg)

For this Jedi Master I used an Ithorian Scout and Sculpey to create his robes. Sculpey was used also to create the poncho type thing on the Wookiee Jedi next to him and a Wookiee Scout was used for the body. "Luke Skywalker, Rogue Leader" was made from the body of Wedge Antilles with a Rebel Pilot's head.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL024.jpg)

When I saw the Luke Skywalker on Tauntaun I knew I had to make "Han Solo on Tauntaun". I modded the Tauntaun's head and tail, Han is holding his gun in the correct hand, he is facing a different direction than Luke and has his sensor thingy(not shown in picture). He is holding the tauntaun reins with his left hand. I sculpted his parka hood and scarf using contour putty.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL025.jpg)

The Yuuzhan Vong Warrior and the Yuuzhan Vong Subaltern figs are OK but the Warrior looks like he might be resting and the Subaltern looks like he might be surrendering. After cutting them apart and repinning them, I tried to give the Warrior a pose that is more kinetic and the Subaltern the look of someone with some command ablity. I've just started to read some to the EU books and part of my interest in the EU has come from the mini game expanding into that realm.

If the Emperor and Vader can have their own squads then I had to have a squad of Clone/Stormtroopers of my own!!! :P Two of these are just repaints while the rest are complete mods. I went with the white, red and black paint scheme because I wanted to be able to use these with any troops of Clones and Storms and not have them look too far out of place.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL027.jpg)

Troopers need leaders, so here are mine. The first one is a Stormtrooper Assassin based on the character from the Ep. 3 video game. Clone Trooper Commander was modded with a different head and arms and given a complete repaint. The ACC is modded and repainted and I even removed his training bar thingy over his head. I hope to make more ARC troops for this squad but I have to finish the Clone Sergeants and Grenadiers first. The astromech droid is a R2 repaint and is usable as a fringe droid as well.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL028.jpg)

The Gunners have been completely modded and painted except the one in the orginal pose. Their paint scheme varies slightly from the regular troopers to set them apart. The AT-RT and it's pilot have both been cut and pinned to give it a little more movement in it's pose. The shark mouth design is based on that of WW2 fighter planes and something similar was seen in Clone Wars Season 3 on the gunship.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL029.jpg)

When I pulled my BARC speeder I was wondering why it was on such a large base (especially after the GG Wheel Bike was only a large). I knew I wanted to mod one for my squad but I wanted it to make more sense being on such a large base. After brainstorming I came up with this. I really like the x-wing look to it and it fills up the base now. Even the pilot has been modded and is sitting higher up on the seat and has his pistol drawn.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL030.jpg)

Here's another easy mod. It's the Reek after meeting Mace. I just cut off a piece the same size as it looks like in the movie and then painted the interior to look like a freshly cut horn. After pulling 4 Reeks I had to do something to tell them all apart.:P

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL031.jpg)

I know I wasn't the only person who thought that the Acklay was a bit small, but I was wrong. It just seems bigger in the movie because it is usually shown from a low camera angle or while it it is rearing up on and standing on it's back four legs. I decided to mod one in a "rearing up" position to see if it would look more like the one in the movie.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL032.jpg)

This was probably the second most fun fig to mod. Athough I cut and pinned my joints I know that scruffynerfherder did one similar by just heating up the joints with a lighter and bending it into position and then letting them cool. I think it makes the figure look more like what I remember from the movie. In a fight, I would put my money on the one on the left!!!

This last finished mod figure is one of my all time favorites--"Yoda, Great Warrior". One day while gaming klecser made a suggestion about making a mod of Yoda based on the scene where him and Obi go back to the temple and the Yoda throws his saber at a trooper. I loved that scene and liked the idea so much I started to make him the next day.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL033.jpg)

He is still on his orginal base and I tried to be as faithful to the scene as possible even down to which side the trooper's gun falls on. I like this one because it helps convey the fact that Yoda kicks butt.

Because it might be a long time until post again I thought I'd give everyone a look at what I'm currently working on. "Mara Jade, Emperor's Assassin":P is a heroclic fig that has been repainted and modded with a saber. I know I'm not the only person to have seen this fig and made this mod--scruffynerfherder and SaberCreator I know both have, but I think this is the only one with a Frazetta style side to it. I have made 4 others that do not have open backs, to complete the set. Next to her is my "Poggle the Lesser" with the start of the Death Star plans. He is a very heavily modded Geonosian Overseer. Both are almost finished.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL035.jpg)

Two more with a lot of work to go are my "Dark Trooper Commander with Rail Gun" and "Gen. Obi Wan on Speeder" in the Akira-esque pose he does when his helmet comes off in the Clone Wars cartoon. I will probably give the Dark Trooper a paint scheme to match the rest of my troopers so I can use him with them and to set him apart from the regular Dark Troopers. The Obi has a lot of work to go.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL036.jpg)

Some people on the boards wonder how to transport/store their figs. I use Plano organizers. They work great and a complete set seems to fit nicely in one large organizer. I use the box my AT-AT mini came in to store my Huge figs. You can see what is in there so you don't have to dig and it's big enough to hold them all. I use a single Plano tray box to keep my custom trooper squad in and use that to transport my figs to tournaments and when I game at friends' places.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL037.jpg)

When I'm not modding figs I'm usually building 3D terrain. This box is filled with Death Star and Cloud City walls that I am building into separate rooms and hallways so I can mix and match them into different maps. These were created from the wonderful printouts found at http://www.swminiatures.com/. Thank you Eric for such an awesome site.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL038.jpg)

Here are the floors to some of the Cloud City rooms that I have been working on along with some Hoth turret guns. These were made from printouts at the above site by frequent board poster Magic-Eli. They are awsome pieces of work and she is a very generous person for sharing them with the SWM community.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL039.jpg)

Here is some of her 3D terrain that I modded. I made the light sculpture a little differntly so that it could hold little pyramid shapes. This way when I finish I can use them for bases and flags in "capture-the-flag" style games.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL040.jpg)
IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL041.jpg)

Last of all are some pictures of the two story Carbon Freezing Chamber by Magic Eli and a Comm Base and Speeders by Momir Farooq. I had to scale down the base and speeders but once I did they went together nicely. They were 1/70 and I changed them to 1/50 scale and they work really well.

Well, thanks for looking, I hope you enjoyed it and let me know what you think. I'd like to thank nimzomitch for his help in getting these images up and for the excellent home brew. I do customs on order if I have the time. PM me if your interested (serious inquires only).

Once again thanks for looking.

You ARE the master, my friend. I am lucky to know an artist such as yourself. We all have different gifts in life and this is yours.

:D
Nice. Enter one of these in the golden wookie contest.
HO MY HOLYNESS, U ARE GOD! MY FREIND....GOD!, u must of had alot of faith to do that yoda killing clone fig, and yet it can out awsome dude, well done
Those are terrific.
Sweet lord dude Some of those I havent even seen yet, SweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeT

So you finally made that Poggle the Lesser youv'e been telling me about at Comic World. good job my man good job.

we will definetly have to post some of my 3-d maps over the Holidays and show these guys how we play at Comic World.

awesome.
Dude, I havent seen that Han on Taun Taun before, and Valice the Warrior, WoW.

Man I mustv'e looked at this thread about 5 times now.

thanks man.
Those are awesome!!!
Those are some fantastic customs. Very well done.
Holy... Crap...

Greatest Thread Ever. You win in life. Good job.
really nice customs!!!! mi favorite is the red dark side adept i would make it for me :D
wow dude I LOVE that Wookiee!
Nice. Can you post your blank card fronts in the files section here:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/StarWarsMiniatures/

Please?

We have some decent cardback there, but no card fronts
Do you you lightsabers cut off from other minis, or have you found something better to use?

I know I'm not the only person to have seen this fig and made this mod--scruffynerfherder and SaberCreator I know both have,

Not to be picky, but I originally made the mod and scruffynerfherder got instructions from me on how to do it. Has he posted it somewhere? Where did you hear he had made one?
Not to be picky, but I originally made the mod and scruffynerfherder got instructions from me on how to do it. Has he posted it somewhere? Where did you hear he had made one?

Hey man do not take this too offense but I modded that fig last year and have never ever ever got instructions from any body how to md, I do all my modding by myself and from my own Brain and figure it out all on my own. so yeah, and I have never posted any pics on these boards. you have me confused with someone else.
sithewok25--I think I will enter the Yoda into the Golden Wookie contest. I wanted to enter the first one but I got the camera the day after the deadline for entries.

Looogy--It was intimidating when I first thought about cutting apart the Yoda fig but I have alot of experience making mods and I did alot of drawings of my idea before I started and studied the sculpt of the fig to figure out the best way cutting it apart.

Scruffy--PM me about getting together to get you stuff up on the boards. And guy lighten up, I don't think SaberCreator knew you had made a Mara mod already. I understand that every artist is protective of their stuff.

SaberCreator--Sometimes I use sabers from other figs if the mod is something special like the Obi on BARC will be, but for others like the Mara fig and the four other "Hand Assassins" like her I just used an acrylic rod. You can find them at model train stores.

I saw scruffynerfherder's Mara about a three or four months ago. We live in the same city and we get to see each other about once a week or so. I saw those figs in the $.25 bin at Comic World about 6 months ago and I showed them to scruffy and told him that I was going to pick them up and make one into a Mara fig and the rest into the Emperor's Hand Assassins. He had a good chuckle because he thought the same thing and had already made his Mara.

When I saw your Mara posted a week or so ago I had a good chuckle and thought that it was ironic but it made sense. When you see that fig it's hard not to think "Holy Crap! That looks like Mara!" But what's really cool is that even though all three of our Maras are similar, they all are different in many ways.

It took almost a week for me in my spare time to get these pictures and all the text together and up. I'll put up my blank and custom cards that I made as soon as I can-I have to get my files in order first.

Wow.
Just...wow. :OMG!

I think this [Mara]is the only one with a Frazetta style side to it.

LOL. Best phrasing I have seen for "nearly naked tuckus" :D

Some people on the boards wonder how to transport/store their figs. I use Plano organizers. They work great and a complete set seems to fit nicely in one large organizer.

Do you store the cards there too?
I have one of those red monsters, but switched to a different system that could hold figures & cards...
I understand that every artist is protective of their stuff.

I can understand too. When Clone Strike came out, I looked at the Dark Side Acolyte and said "Hey Scarab from Heroclix would make a great mod for that."
IMAGE(http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/8990/scarab7uy.gif)
Next day (before I finished mine) one of my freinds who had heard me already had his out on the table... never ended up finishing mine.

Dead God....help us all! KISS has invaded the star wars universe!
Best custom work I've seen, period. Wow.
Those are great! That Yoda is the absolute don!
fantastic customs,

any chance we could get another angle of the standing dark side acolyte,
is that a new body or just a repose?
i also pin my modds to add strength and it helps get the angle you want.

you dont seem to paint whole figs once you have modded them do you find it hard to match the colours for touch up painting?

keep up the good work!

i cant decide if i am inspired or intimidated
I can't help it. Not a bad job. Painting can use some work though. Good to see a bunch of customs. I'm currently working on a Han on Taun Taun - Completely repainting the whole thing.
Impressive. Most impressive. (sorry, I had to say it)

IS, this is a pretty incredible body of work, and to think you did it all with everything else you've got going on...My hat's off to you.

AFAIK, this is really your first foray into modding and painting miniatues...? I've seen you improve your techniques and get more and more inventive in the year+ you've been modding SWM figs, and I must say I am very pleasantly surprised and glad for you. I had no idea you would stick with modding for so long.

And to think...I got you started on this whole SWM thang. *blush* hehe

CF - I've seen your customs. Err, I mean repaints. You have *no* room to criticize other's painting, so please go pee on someone else's parade.
hey really great work; I really like the poses you come up; you've got pining and gluing down to a fine art!
Outstanding work if you ever do a shirtless Maul let me know
You play at Comic World don't you? I think I've seen some of you stuff there.

You're right, I do suck. I'm gonna go melt all my minis down into a pile of plastic now.
You mentioned it before, ironlightsaber, but I am just amazed at the guts you have in actually cutting up your rare/very rare figures. Doing that shows to me that even though I know you are a hardcore collector it is also about the art and creativity.

My favorite part of all your mods is that they are DYNAMIC. They look like they are doing something other than just standing there. Brings them to life. Bravo.

I totally agree with the above statement.
Those are some of the best customs i have ever seen!
I really like the Wookie Jedi. Really great job on everything!
so whatchya working on now?
"Genreral Grievous, Hunting Jedi"
