    Upcoming changes

I've sent out a broadcast to all of the Commander group members, but I'm also posting this to the Commander group blog for more public access.

There will be some important changes happening to the Commander format in the next few weeks.

First, Wotc is releasing From the Vault: Relics to Magic Online on August 25. This brings online players one of the most iconic and sorely missed mana accelerators ever printed, Sol Ring. It is going to be restricted in Classic based formats, but obviously that won't make a difference for Commander .
Relics will also bring us the Scars of Mirrodin card, Sword of Body and Mind, which will also be legal in Classic based formats as soon as Relics is released.

Then, on September 8th, the Elspeth vs Tezzeret Duel Deck will be added to MTG:O, and due to the new wording on Elspeth, Magic Online will have a new zone implemented, the "Command Zone".
This brings Commander even more in sync with paper EDH, as EDH has been using the Command zone for some time now.

Once this update is complete, Commanders will no longer use the Exile zone and will instead use the new Command zone (Elspeth will also use the Command zone for the new Emblem item she creates). Commanders will continue to have the same type of functionality in the Command zone that they had in the Exile zone.

This also means that Riftsweeper will be unbanned, since it can no longer preemptively interact with Commanders.

New additions to the ban list

As per the usual formula, Magic Online continues to follow the paper EDH ban recommendations.

As of June 20th, the following 3 cards are banned in Commander:

    Channel
    Staff of Domination
    Tolarian Academy

You can visit the paper EDH boards if you are interested in the full explanation of the EDH RC's reasoning for banning those cards, and  also for the discussion threads centered around those decisions.

Essentially, the feeling is that explosively fast mana production is unhealthy for the format, and that SoD was only ever used as a combo enabler.

    Commander Wiki Links

    Crew,

The intra-wiki links in our pages have broken.  I have found the problem and am working on fixing them now, please bear with me as I get them back up.

Update: It appeared a change to the parser no longer allows spaces in intra-wiki links, so all of our links were now pointing to blank pages ("Page_" instead of "Page").  I think I have them ll fixed now, but let me know if you find anything I miss.

PS:  I am starting to populate the new Staples card pages.  Please provide input in the forum thread if you have any ideas/suggestions.

    December B &R for EDH

    Relevant info is here:

    forum.dragonhighlander.net/EDH_Forum/vie...

    Grindstone is unbanned.
    Painter's Servant is banned.

What does this mean for the online Commander player? Well for me at least, it means that Painter's has to come out of my Oona deck.

While the EDH RC doesn't control the Commander format, Wizards has followed their recommendations pretty much to the letter until now and I dont' expect them to break from that anytime soon.
Also, there is usually some lag time between the EDH announcement and the online implementation so we'll either have until the 20th of Dec or possibly until the 20th of Jan.

I'm kind of sad to see this.
I realize that Iona was probably the proverbial straw and that Painters will only get more broken as time goes by. I also know that banning Iona instead of Painter's  would have been a suboptimal choice. Just as leaving both Iona and Painters in the format would have been.

But I'm still disappointed because Painter's allowed some very cool interactions outside of the brokenness; Oona, Tesya and a few other odd cases (like it's interaction with the CoP's).

I guess it comes down to the fact that it was just too easy.

Please feel free to discuss this in the thread located here:

    Sacrifice Bug

This is just a heads up for all commander players, the sacrifice bug was NOT fixed with the most recent update. Barter in Blood is still causing games to lock up while displaying "Waiting for ."

If you have a deck with Barter you have two options; either create an alternate decklist until this bug is fixed or don't cast it.

I will send out a broadcast when I have confirmation this bug is fixed.
