The oceans are a dangerous place. Those who live there survive through tribal bonds and displays of power. To the chief of his clan, a powerful young warrior was born.The chief had a strong wife, a powerful hunter whose skill with the trident was legend. One day, though, while on the hunt, her group was attacked by a krakon. She was the only one who survived, but she had lost her legs when her spine was shattered. Ocean life is not forgiven, and she was condemned to bansihment; not to burden the village with need of her care. The young boy refused to abandon his mother, following her. The chief merely laughed. He knew he would be back once the now weak woman he called mother died. But she did not. Decades passed, the young boy caring for his mother. He faced the world alone, knowing no fear, and many of the ocean creatures learned fear in turn through his exploits. He found a gift for raw magic, in particular, the power over death. He used this power to help his mother and bring her life. His tribe heard of his exploits and came to him, offering him a place of honour in is tribe having proved himself over his siblings. He only had one condition. That his mother rejoined the village. They refused. Knowing, however, that he would be an asset, the chief arranged for the boys mother to be poisened. Without her, he would surely come to them. He came to them. He came in a fury, demanding a cure be given. The chief refused, to which the boy replied with a challenge. A mortal match against the chief. The chief had no choice to accept, and they met in battle. The boy was a skilled swordsman, but so was the chief. However, for every blow the boy landed, the chief found himself weakening, dropping to the boys knees not to wounds, but to the blackened muscles which could no longer support him. The boy demanded the cure, but was refused. It was his right to slay the chief. Instead, he left him far worse; he drained the power of his legs. His former father left crippled and dishonoured, the boy left in disgust. He declared his father honourless and cut his connection to him, naming himself Al'Tiar, without father in the ancient aquatic tongue. He took his mother to a land he had heard of where he may find the cure; where magic may be used for healing rather than hunting and power: The surface. He heard of a dragon who could cure him, but he lived deep in the dessert. The transition was brutal, but the now young man was persistant. He trudged through, keeping himself and his mother alive through raw force of will. He continued, without the water he needed to survive, carrying his mother on his back as far as he could. He collapsed one day, having gone days wothout water. As the vultures came for his body, a hawk saw him and, in an act of abnormal intelligance, took pity on the elf. It came in, ripping the vultures apart. It then grabbed the man's scabbard, flying it miles to a local oasis and filling it with water. He brang it back, reviving the elf and guiding him to the oasis. A bond was formed that day that will never go away. He called the hawk Gan, aquatic for Death's Light. It was many more days in the dessert until he found the dragon, but through the hawk's aid, he made it. He came to the dragon, who was impressed by the elf's journey. He granted the elf a cure for his mother, and he even gave her a cloak which would let her fly without the use of her legs. The young man moved on, with only Gan and his mother, now sure of what he must do. He must better himself. He must become great so that he could save others. Emotion, weakness, frivolity; these were things he could not afford if others were to be able to have them. He comes to Gladius seeking to perfect hid mastery of martial skills and magic. |
