Announcing the 3nd Annual Prestige Competition of the Core Coliseum: Gladius Edition!

Ever considered making a Lich or Vampire but didn’t want to spend all those credits?  How about a Lycanthropic half-Dragon-half-Celestial?  Maybe you just want a simple Were T-Rex.

Well this is your chance! Just submit your character design according to the rules and guidelines below and post it to the Official Entry Thread.

Specifics

Create an ECL4 - ECL20 character with at least 1 template. Although any ECL up to 20 is allowed, bear in mind that most of the activity in the CoCo is at a much lower ECL. Characters can have more than the minimum racial hit dice and any number of class levels.

Rules

All characters must abide by the rules of the CoCo. Each character is permitted up to 20 credits-worth of items or options. The credit cost of starting at a higher ECL is waived for this competition (for example, many exotic races start off at a higher ECL and thus cost credits; this cost is not to be considered in the 20 credit maximum). If you exercise the option for credit-costing equipment, make sure you note the appropriate cost in the entry.

Submissions may be posted from Wednesday, 10 October 2012 until 31 October 2012, 9AM EST (2PM GMT). Any submissions received after that date will not be considered for scoring.

Each player may submit up to two entries, but only the highest scoring of the two will be evaluated among the rest of the entries.

Judging

Uknits will be the sole judge of this competition.

Scoring

Scoring is handled in three categories

1. Creativity: This competition's focus is on ideas that haven't been done in the CoCo before or that are putting a new spin on an existing idea. Up to 10 points can be earned in this category.
2. Accuracy: Incomplete characters will earn a 0 in this category. Sheets without errors will be given a full 5 points. Errors shall subtract up to 1 point each (though typos and the like will only be a fraction of a point).
3. Background: Characters should have backgrounds to give the character some personality and an idea of where he came from. Focus is on quality, not quantity however, so be concise. Up to 5 points can be earned in this category.

Winners

Up to 1/3rd of the entries will be winners, with a maximum of 3 winners no matter how many entries are presented (for example, with 3 entries, only one will be the winner; if there are 50 entries, only 3 entries will be winners).

1st prize: Addition of the character to the active roster with all 20 credits-worth approved. In addition the player earns 5 credits to spend as s/he wishes. The 1st place winner will have a Reputation tag applied to the character that gives a +1 bonus to Leadership scores

Additional winners will each gain 3 credits to spend as they wish. They can also activate the winning character for 5 credits at any time in the future (with the 20 credits-worth of special equipment or UA material).

Alternative Winner Prizes

If the winner(s) desire that s/he wants to start the winning character at a lower ECL, the winner can do so and the character can gain the exact credit purchases used by the winning character in the new character's career for no credit cost (or, in the case of the non-1st place winner(s), they can start the character for 5 credits).

Exceptions

Uknits is not permitted to enter this competition as a contestant. He has plenty of credits he misers over to activate any character he wants.

Oooh, cool! I've always wanted to do one of these!
Flag The_Fred October 10, 2012 5:32 AM PDT
Relevant to this, what counts as a 10 credit and what as a 15 credit item? For example, an X/day cast ??? item would not be disimmilar to one of many standard items, so does that count as only 10?
Flag TelinArtho October 10, 2012 5:40 AM PDT
Most items that are cast something x/day will be a completely custom item - so those are 15 credits. This is both because it is often more cost effective (compare hand of glory for 8k where most people only care about the see invisibility option and it takes the neck slot to goggles of see invisibility 1/day for 2160gp that takes up a less-used slot).
Flag The_Fred October 10, 2012 7:05 AM PDT
Hmm, OK, that's fair enough I guess. I may have to think about that.

There aren't actually all that many Core-only templates. I do think I have a wacky idea, but mechanically, he's going to suck in certain circumstances so I need to think about that.
Flag Yitzi October 10, 2012 8:29 AM PDT
When's the deadline?
Flag TelinArtho October 10, 2012 8:55 AM PDT
Under the rules section:

Submissions may be posted from Wednesday, 10 October 2012 until 31 October 2012, 9AM EST (2PM GMT). Any submissions received after that date will not be considered for scoring.

Flag Yitzi October 10, 2012 1:10 PM PDT
Ah, missed that, thanks.  Also, what's the rule about reusing previous submissions that didn't win anything (possibly fixing what got them a low score last time)?
Flag Uknits October 10, 2012 3:11 PM PDT
Nothing wrong with it, just realize bringing the same idea twice won't do wonders for creativity unless you revamp the original.
Flag voxthunder October 10, 2012 7:03 PM PDT
I'm confused on how Ghasts work. The SRD lists Ghasts as 4 HD, LA -. This usually means you can't use as a PC. The races and classes guide in the wiki has them listed as 4 HD, LA +4. Can I use a Ghast in the CoCo with LA +4 (so ECL 8 with no class levels) or is my dream of a Phrenic Ghast hopeless?
Flag Uknits October 10, 2012 7:15 PM PDT
Ghast is completely legal.  We use the LA for certain undead as listed in a particular rules of the game article as the monsters in question are listed in a core book.  Any race in the guide in the wiki is legal, regardless of the LA listed in the SRD.
Flag The_Fred October 11, 2012 8:00 AM PDT
Ah, damnit, I was going to do a Phrenic Ghast! I guess it wasn't all that original after all...

The LA comes from Libris Mortis, I think, but since the races themselves are in the SRD, they're close enough to be counted as Core for our purposes.
Flag Uknits October 24, 2012 10:08 AM PDT
Just 1 week left to submit your entries!  Rememeber, you can submit 2 entries, and if everybody submits an entry, it will be enough, for the first time in it 3 year run, for there to be 2 winners!
Flag voxthunder October 26, 2012 11:13 AM PDT
If you don't have a stat (say, you're a Ghast with a Con of Ø ), you can just ignore it and put 0 points in it for point buy, right?
Flag Uknits October 26, 2012 11:21 AM PDT
Correct.  It's why incorporeal undead are so well off stat wise; no point in Str or Con.
Flag voxthunder October 26, 2012 11:51 AM PDT
Can a character whose race has advancement "by HD" start as an Advanced Ghast (so with 5 HD instead of 4), and/or as they level up add advancement HD instead of class levels?

EDIT: actually, undead HD kinda suck so I won't use this, but this is still something I'd like to know
Flag Uknits October 26, 2012 12:22 PM PDT
Yes.  You can always level up HD if the advancement lists it.  You can even add those levels whenever, so you could alternate racial levels with levels of somthing else.

Also, yes.  Undead levels are pretty poor.  Really the only reason to take racial hit dice in that case is to increase the save DC's, but they don't increase that much.

Incorporeals still have Str, but it only applies vs other incorporeals.

No they don't.  I think you're thinking of ghosts, who are corporeal (and thus have strength scores) on the ethereal plane.  True incorporeals, such as shadows, have no STR score at all.

Flag The_Fred October 28, 2012 3:43 AM PDT
Ah damnit, Ethereals, not Incorporeals!
Yeah, the mention of undead made me think of ghosts.

Due to recent events, I am going to have limited internet capabilities for the next week.  Because of this and the few entries, the deadline will be extended by 1 week.  Entries for the Prestige Competition will be due November 6th by midnight, GMT.
Flag The_Fred October 29, 2012 12:43 PM PDT
That's probably a good thing, given I haven't done my entry yet...

Thanks! I've been trying to get my entry finished, but I've been busy and figured it was nearly too late.

Flag Uknits November 14, 2012 1:27 PM PST
Alright everybody, judging is finished!  Out winning entry did well on creativity and lost some points for a simple mistake due to houserules, it was his backstory that put him ahead.

And, without further ado, the winner is.....

Kerith!

I understand timing was bad for this competition with many of our regular memebers busy and then hurricane Sandy.  If you did not win, don't worry, there will be more contests in the future.  In the mean time, Crogratulations Yitzi!

Full Scoring Show

Two-Tone (15/20) Show

Creativity 8/10
The novelty of being a half dragon dragon really accounts for most of this. Aside from this factor, the build is well balanced, with a good list of immunities, strong AC, decent attacks, and wands for extra circumstances. Aside from novelty, though, there isn't too much that this build offers as far as unique tactics.

Accuracy 5/5
Aside from a slight typo in the template abilities spoiler where you list you breath weapon as a line fo lightning, this build is accurate.

Backround 2/5
With nothing but a physical description and basic personality profile, there is nothing to this character. Some history would be much appreciated.

Haka (14/20) Show

Creativity 6/10
The giant, tripping spiked chain build is very prolific in D&D society. That said, the means of gaining size and trip modifier are impressive on this build, and using an advanced animal lycanthrope for large size is a good note. In combat, though, this build offers nothing unique. He is simply a giant melee build who has good AC and saves.

Accuracy 3/5
An unfinished skill section accounts for most of this.

Backround 5/5
An excellant demonstartion of both history and personality, this is the kind of excellant storytelling
that I believe we have come to expect from Eluria.

Kerith (15.5/20) Show

Creativity 7/10
I have yet to see a lich in Gladius, and a quick search reveals there have been none in at least a long time. The focus on the lich's touch and the use of battle sorcerer is also an interesting aspect, especilly with the dex focus and weapon finnesse.

Accuracy 4/5
There is only one problem, but it is a pretty big one. You don't have to pay for you phylactery as per CoCo houserules. Since this only gives you money, it isn't as bad as an error which would put you over your funds, but it does mean you have 120,000 gp more than you used.

Backround
4.5/5
A long and interesting story with full character evolution, the extra thought in having sleep and switching it out was excellant.

Wikkel (14/20) Show

Creativity 5/10
Unfortunatley, this build is very similiar to another semi-active build, Krixx. Also, being afflicted means that he will commonly be switching to dire rat form involuntarily.

Accuracy 5/5
Nothing missing here.

Backround 4/5
While a bit on the generic side, it is none-the-less well written and interesting. It gives him real personality as well.

Razaku (11.5/20) Show

Creativity 6/10
He's a ghost. While there aren't any Ghosts active, an ability drain etherial character just won the competition last year. Aside from that, there isn't much versatility to him.

Accuracy 1/5
He doesn't have his Wilder powers listed. He also has an issue with his psicrown. A custom Psicrown is 15 credits, and then the ML is 2 CL above your ECL, which should be another 10 credits for a 25 credit item. Finally, while the listing for this rule is obscure, you can only choose 2 special Ghost attacks, and you have 3 (Draining Touch, Corrupting Gaze, and Telekinisis).

Backstory 4.5/5
Brilliant and concise, the backround is amusing and fun. Despite the fun of it, it still is able to convey his personality and history, making it a brilliant backround indeed.

Algernon (12.5/20) Show

Creativity 7/10
The synergy of Phreric and Ghast is brilliant. With 2 strong Charisma based abilities combined with the Phreric abilities, this is a viable build and then using you Charisma for UMD and UPD further helps. The inability to fly or even move fast may get you as you are a melee based build, but at least you have a ranged wand.

Accuracy 2/5
First of all, You don't list you psi like abiulities from being Phreric, and those would be pretty major. You also fail to mention his +2 Turn Resistance that you may appreciate or the Power Resistance.
Secondly, your credits are again off. Vest of resistance is correct, but goggles of UMD would be 15 credits as they are not based off of any existing item. The same applies to the ring of concentration. This leaves you at 35 out of 20 credits.

Backround 3.5/5

While it really doesn't tell me his story, it made me laugh. The brilliance of its writing has to be commended.

Congratulations, Yitzi! I really enjoyed the idea for this contest, and I'm sorry I didn't submit an entry-- I put it off and by the time I thought of getting around to it I was too busy to write any thing. I particularly liked Two-Tone, the half-dragon dragon. Haka was fun to read about as well.
Flag The_Fred November 14, 2012 2:49 PM PST
Yes, congrats indeed! The Lich idea is great - I've been put off those sorts of characters by their high ECL but I do like the use of Battle Sorcerer.

As I think you can guess by the poor accuracy, my entries were a bit rushed.
I honestly didn't know about the Ghost ruling either, which is good to know (I realised about the Psicrown too late but figured I had the credits for it - forgot about the ECL). For future reference, though, are skill-boosting items really 15 credits? The Blackmarket post suggests "Boots of Balance +5" and "Hat of Diplomacy +5" as 5-credit examples.

Still, there's always next time - and I'll be looking forward to seeing Wikkel in action!
Flag TelinArtho November 14, 2012 3:54 PM PST
The downside of developing a wyrmling dragon, sadly, is that there isn't much background to provide. I knew I should have done more there.

Congratulations Yitzi!
Flag dgallaty November 16, 2012 11:57 AM PST
Nice background on Kerith! Congratulations, Yitzi.
