A couple questions:

1.  If you enchant a shield as a weapon and add the parrying ability, do you get the bonus even if you don't use it as a weapon?

2.  Can you use an animated shield as a weapon?

3.  Would an animated shield then be able to have the parrting quality for 8,000 GP?

Parrying does not require attacking with the weapon - only to hold it.

In order to enchant it as a weapon it first needs to be enchanted with the bashing quality. If it had the bashing quality you could then follow up with parrying.

I don't think you could use an animated shield as bashing since you don't actually hold it. Likewise - since you aren't holding the animated shield - I don't think you can benefit from parrying (the same would go for a dancing parrying weapon).

I thought you could just enchant it as +1 as a weapon...

Regarldess, couldn't I just add MW shield spikes and enchant those with parrying?

Good point. You could enchant the magic spikes or the base shield as a weapon (but it enchants separately as a weapon and a shield)

I was under the impression that the bashing went on the shield, not the spikes, and that it was a separate thing altogether - though I think bashing is surely the most cost-effective thing to get. I was told that if the shield has bashing, when used as a weapon it was already considered to be a +1, so you are paying 3k (upgrading the shield to a +2 equiv) for a 2k +1 enhancement (but also getting the size damage increase).
