Background and personality


Rethin was the son of a couple who moved to Gladius from the east. Unused to the intrigue of Gladius, they spoke up against a corrupt nobleman, and were assassinated. Rethin was forced to the streets for a living. Between his quick mind and nimble fingers, he managed to not only survive, but make several contacts, through which he learned what had happened. One time, when he was trying his hand at grave robbing, he discovered a man watching him. The man was a necromancer (of debatable morality), and, feeling Rethin’s intelligence was wasted as he was, took him in and taught him magic. After a few years, however, Rethin’s master had a visitor. The same nobleman who had had Rethin’s parents killed wanted something from the necromancer. Seeing his opportunity for revenge, Rethin led the nobleman to an empty storage room and, under the pretense of activating the magic to take them to his master, activated the intruder alarms. The guard skeleton made short work of the nobleman. Realizing that his master would likely not be pleased at the death of a powerful (and paying) customer once it was discovered, Rethin grabbed his things and headed off to make his living at the arena.
Rethin, while not precisely evil, is not above harming others to get what he wants, so long as he feels those others deserved it in some way. He has no respect for any rules except his own, but will never transgress his own rules. While not quick to make friends or enemies, he treasures the former and has an extremely wide vicious streak toward the latter.
