The Blackmarket of Gladius
For Purchases only!Welcome stranger, this is the Blackmarket of Gladius. Why a blackmarket, you ask? Tststs. It seems you haven't read the latest heading on all Gladius newspapers but with all the bashing you gladiators get I am not surprised that you missed that. Here, this is a magic recorder-stone with the mayors rant, just 1 gold coins. Wanna hear it first? Alright... Excerpt from the speech of Rito Maya, mayor of Gladius: "...and it is obvious that the missing parts of the Nimbus made life much more dangerous, especially in a city such as this one. Powerful wizards and mighty psions have a great influence on Gladiosian politics but on the long ascend to their current level of power they also learned about the responsibility to use their influence carefully, and most of them do. However, the new adepts, hedgewizards, those who just begin with their career have found a way to crave power quickly by using high-powered items - available everywhere in Gladius - with which they can now force their way up. While this hasn't been a problem in the past - the Nimbus would have made their claims ridiculous - they now hold a weapon in their hands that is not meant to belong there. And this is why I hereby declare that all expendable items such as scrolls, potions, powerstones, oils, and tattoos, will only be given to those that wield the appropriate power, and have the necessary experience to use this power." Hehe, no expendables, heard that? Yeah, and that is where the Blackmarket comes in... Blackmarket RulesIf you want to buy a custom item, a higher level spell from NPC Spellcasting service, or anything else that costs credits, post your request here in the Blackmarket. You need to specify what you want to buy, and post the credit cost of that item (just to see that we're on the same page). The GM (TelinArtho) or an Elder will then quote your request and deduct the correct amount of credits from your account. You have to link this post to the item in question. Failure to do so means you do not possess that item.

One Time Offer: Activate a higher ECL character Each player, once in their career at the Core Coliseum, may activate a single character of an ECL higher than 3 for the one time cost of 5 credits. This only covers the activation cost - not any additional credit costs that might be incurred by the character (UA material, custom items, etc). While there is no restriction on the ECL allowed by this offer, it is recommended to activate characters where other characters are already present. This offer is not refundable - so choose carefully before executing it. In your typical game, the GM will decide what items your character can find, buy or craft. In CoCo we use rules to control access to magical items or customized allies. In the Blackmarket you can buy Restricted Items. Since they are forbidden by the official Gladius authority, you need to spend credits to get access to the Gladius Blackmarket (Roleplay: credits reflect the connections you have). You only get the "right to buy" restricted items; you still have to pay the gold costs! If you want to buy a custom item, post your request here, and the GM (TelinArtho) will deduct the appropriate amount of credits from your account. There are different tiers of custom items (silvered = not available yet)
- You may pay 1° to get the right to buy magical projectile ammunition in stacks of 5 or 10 (both stacks have the same credit cost). This applies to arrows, bolts, and bullets. You may pay 2° to buy any number of ammunition. The ammunition cost applies normally. Normally, you can only buy stacks of 50. Note that there are special arrows (slaying, sleep) which do not follow this rule. Example: 10x +2 arrows of human bane, 5x +1 seeking bolt, 27x +3 coldiron frost bullet (2°
.
- You may pay credits to get the right to buy Potions, Oils, or Tattoos that have a CL higher than your ECL. You may pay 1° per 2 CL the Potion/Oil/Tattoo is above your ECL (max 20). Normally, you may only buy Potions and Tattoos with a CL up to your ECL. Example: Oil of protection from energy [CL 20]
- You may pay credits to get the right to buy Custom Scrolls and Powerstones. Normally, you are only allowed to buy Scrolls or Stones of up to your CL+2. You can pay 1° per CL to buy scrolls or stones with a higher CL than allowed. Note that two spells on one scroll still count as two custom items as do several custom powers stored within one powerstone! Example: Scroll of Aid [CL 10], Stone of inertial armor [ML 8]
- You may pay credits to get the right to buy Custom Spell Trigger Items. For wands, dorjes, psicrowns, staffs, etc you have to pay 5° per CL above your ECL. Normally, you can only buy Spell Trigger items with a CL up to your ECL, and the only staffs and psicrowns available are the ones in the SRD. You can also spend 5° to acquire a staff or psicrown that appears in the SRD, but at a different caster level, up to a CL equal to your ECL (unless you pay credits for the higher CL, as described). Example: Psicrown of Astral Legion [ML 15], Wand of vampiric touch [CL 20].
- You may pay 5° to get the right to buy custom permanent items with a different numerical bonus than the ones listed in the DMG, up to the maximum listed in the DMG. You may pay an additional 5° to get a higher bonus than listed in the DMG unless it is specifically prohibited by the rules (max weapons/armor+5, max skills+10, etc). It still must have the same type of bonus (see 'different type' below for customizing boni types). You may combine this with one of the customizations below but you need to pay the combined credit cost. Example: Headband of intellect+1, Cloak of elvenkind+3, Hat of disguise+7 (10°
.
- You may pay 5° to get the right to buy custom permanent items based on the ones in the books. It must fulfill the body slot affinities on DMG, p288. If it is not 100% clear that the slot is appropriate, it is assumed 'not matching' (see 'different slot' below for customizing slots). If the item provides a numerical bonus, you may only use those boni explicitely mentioned in the books (see 'different bonus' above for customizing boni). You may combine this with another customization but you have to pay the combined credit costs. Example: Boots of Balance+5, Hat of Diplomacy+5, Belt of Health+2, Necklace of Resistance+1.
- You may pay 5° to get the right to use a different body slot for an item than that suggested in the body slot affinity on DMG p288. Such items also cost +50% gold, and need GM approval. Truly odd slots (eg. goggles of giant strength) will never be allowed, as will only those slots listed in the body slot affinity table. This modification can only be used in conjunction with other customizations and you have to pay the combined credit costs.
- You may pay 10° to get the right to combine different magic items in one slot. You may not change the type of bonus (eg. deflection -> insight). You may combine this with one of the other customizations but you need to pay the combined credit cost. Example: Gloves of strength and dexterity+4, Amulett of health+2 and natural armor+1.
- You may pay 10° to get the right to buy custom items with a different type of bonus but it still must be the same item as in the books (see above for customizing items, slots, and numerical boni). The bonus type must fit the item's purpose and must be in line with the table 7-33 on DMG p285. Note that a different bonus type incurs also a higher gold cost! You will find a complete list of bonus types on p21 in the DMG. Unfitting boni will never be allowed. If you want to combine this with one of the customizations above, you need to pay the combined credit price. Example: Bracers of armor+5 (luck), Cloak of resistance+3 (sacred)
- You may pay 10° to get the right to acquire intelligent items. Such items may never be bought but are being given out on Quests and Campaigns. Post your request in the Black Market as normal. Once it has been approved, send a link to the approval to your questlord/campaignlord, and they will work it in to the story and include the item in the quest/campaign summary (if successful). If you fail the quest, you can attempt it again without needing additional approval.
- You may pay 15° to get the right to buy Custom Thematic Staffs. Such a Staff must be at least CL 8, and can contain as few as 1 spell. All spells must be related in some way, and the Elder in charge of the Blackmarket decides whether the composition is a valid one. A new staff always comes with 50 charges, and no spell can cost more than 5 charges per use. Note that you also have to pay for a higher CL if yours is not high enough (see 'Custom Spell Trigger Items' above). Example: Staff of the Night (Entropic shield, Darkness, Deeper Darkness)
- You may pay 15° to get the right to buy custom items not related to any category above but still calculatable. Since this category opens a broad variety of freely customized items, any item that falls into this category needs to be closely looked upon. This needs approval from the GM! Unbalanced items like a continuous Ring of True Strike (8000 gp) will never be allowed. Example: +2 keen Flametongue, Ring of greater invisibility
Custom Items are not the only ways to spend credits for contraband. Spells a gladiator buys from a NPC Wizard (or any other spellcaster/manifester) are restricted aswell by the official Gladius authorities. Or you may acquire other allies than those allowed by the Gladiosian Register of Legal Creatures. Of course, the Blackmarket does not have such limits although since it is a dangerous business to violate the laws of Gladius, you need very good connections (ie credits) to get your hand on illegal things. Here is the offer: NPC Spellcasting: You may pay credits to get the right to make use of NPC Spellcasting Services that exceeds your limit. Normally, you can only buy a cast spell of up to your ECL (see FAQ: NPC Services). You have to pay 1° per CL above your ECL. Advanced Allies: You can pay credits to get the right to acquire an advanced monster from the list of available allies. Be it a quested beast with more hit dice, or a monster that uses the Elite Ability Array, no matter how it is advanced, you have to pay a flat one-time cost of 5 credits (see FAQ: Allies for more information on Advanced Allies). (This option was removed) Customized Allies: All purchased creatures may be customized (by using Elite Array or changing skill ranks) at no credit cost, but at an increased market price which reflects the special training you request. All allies attained by Handle Animal cost credits to customize: you have to pay a flat 5° if you want to relocate skill points, and 5° if you wish to use the elite ability array. Change Alignment: You can pay credits to change your current alignment. Alternatively, you can change the alignment on a race with an "Always ". For each step the new alignment is different from the old/normal one, you have to pay 5°. For example, you could pay 10° to play a true neutral succubus (1 step from Chaotic to Neutral and 1 from Evil to Neutral). Required class alignments can never be changed. Unearthed Arcana: Any variant race, class, or feature from the Unearthed Arcana section costs 10°. Once you have paid for it, that character can advance in a class or use a feature as you see fit without paying additional credits. Any additional item costs credits once again. Skip a Miniquest: You can avoid having to go on a miniquest to gain an ally or meet a prestige class's entry requirement with an expenditure of 3°. Fast Crafting: You can pay 1 credit to skip 1 week's Full Activity to craft.

Crafting Items and RequirementsIf a character wants to craft a custom magic item himself, he has to fulfill prerequisites just like most magic items have prerequisites, be it a spell or a certain alignment or something else. The magic items listed in the DMG serve hereby as a guideline. For example, +5 Perform Dance Shoes might require you to have 5 ranks in Perform Dance. If the requirements are not clear, you need GM confirmation first. The Training Hall of GladiusOnce in a while, you might reach a point where you realize that you have made a mistake in your beloved build. Not wanting to retire the character you played for so long, you wonder if you can make a slight change on the sheet. The good news: You can. Either by bringing up a good reason why you should be allowed to change it, or by paying credits. The most important thing, however, is the GM approval. Without it, your change is illegal and your character goes straight to prison on the next audit. It also doesn't look cool.
- Free Changes: This applies to really minor changes, or changes that need to be done because of a new/altered rule in the Rules of Gladius. The same is true if you haven't made use of the item in question or if your character is still ECL 3. There might be other instances where you can change the item for free. Any other change requires credits.
- Normal Changes: A normal change requires a fee and applies to something that you have already used or something that has not been affected by a recent rules change. The basic credit cost is 5°-10° per thing that you want to change. For more drastic changes, the GM might set a higher credit cost.
- Drastic Changes: If you want to make a significant change on your sheet that alters your character so that he is much different from the previous version, like exchanging several levels, or several normal changes, you have to pay the credit cost as if you are posting a new character of that level (min. 5°). You keep everything you had (gold, xp, items, etc) but make the changes that you got approved of.
- Complete Rebuild: If you want to make an even more drastic change or several drastic changes, you should better make a new character.
- Item Refunds: For characters who didn't craft an item and who have an item that may no longer be of use (or that was not as useful as intended), you can refund the item's full cost instead of selling it for half price. This should be done sparingly, and the cost can be significant for an item that gave you many successes in the past. The cost is 2° per item per level it was in use. So - you go through one fight cycle with the item and want to drop it - 2°; you buy it at ECL4 and use it through ECL10 - 14°. Make a case for how much it has been used, link to as many fights as possible for case examples.
Guidelines
- If you're unsure about the credit cost or have a question write a PM to the Game Master instead of asking in this thread.
- Post your change request here, along with the new item. Please express yourself clearly, and back-up your request with arguments.
- Once I have responded, link my post to the item you changed on your sheet. Failure to do so means it has not been approved.

Julgi's old hunting friend has come for a "visit" to the Gladius. He's carrying some of the more spiritual of Julgi's tools. Julgi goes to meet his contact. String of Knots This common string is tied into a small circular bracelet meant to be worn on the wrist. It has three lightly knotted strings tied to it crafted from various plants and organs. When a knot is loosed (a standard action), the equivalent of a spell takes effect on the wearer of the main string. Tie of True Strike(x1) and Ties of Expeditious Retreat(x2) Prices: 50gp + 50gp + 50gp = 150gp. Julgi uses 1 week of Gather Information to circumvent this item's credit cost.
