Owen awoke from his divination trance suddenly. Something did not sit well with that vision. Rising he put on his outer robes and sent a novice to summon Nest to his office. He did not have to wait long before his student arrived. She entered along with Wraith floating behind her. She didn’t speak but entered and poured herself some tea before taking a chair.

Owen took a sip of his own savoring it just a bit before starting. “I’ve had a vision that is not promising. In it the power of the Nimbus seems to be waining and death becomes rampant in Gladius. Magic to heal no longer works and it seems that slowly Gladius consumes itself. The vision doesn’t say how or where or what, but the end result seems to be a warning.”

Nest pondered for a few moments, sipping some of her tea before responding. “A scout party? But to where? With no leads we can’t even be sure what they will find or how they will find it. Even if they do find it, will they succeed?”

Owen watched Nest and knew that she understood the situation clearly. They needed more information. The Arcane Order’s ranks had dwindled since the repelling of Denth’s summoners.
Aside from Nest and himself, there were only a handful of mages that still filled the Order’s ranks. In the aftermath Denth both sides had taken to dragging opposite members outside of Gladius and slaying them. Owen was made aware of some of these things after the fact as he would have condoned the actions. He did not however miss the trouble that was removed by some of these ‘disappearances’. Owen had met with Kraegin and a very tense peace was restored and the focus returned the arena of Gladius as the guilds seemed to show less interest in the Nimbus and pulled up shop.

The Arcane Order now only held but an outpost in Gladius having relocated to Promethia. If Owen had a guess to make he suspected the Celestial Forces and Habinari had moved more underground in their war. With Denth opening up the gates of Hell to let most anything come through the view of planar beings were at an all-time low. The naturalists and the psions had moved away as well. They had their own reasons and Owen knew that the War had affected the natural order enough to be slightly hindering both aspects of casting and manifesting. With the power vacuum, the Loyalists had purchased mercenaries from the Warrior’s guild and installed their own government. No longer needed to call themselves a guild as they were in charge of the city now, and doing a good job with the rebuild process.

Owen paused to mark the ending of the Guild era in Gladius, it was humorous to think that it wasn’t a massive war between guilds, but an external force that caused the downfall.

“Tap the spy network and press them to search for something. In the meantime I’ll work on putting together an expedition party”

Novices had traveled around the town creating illusions of Owen’s message to serve as posters. Not many had come to his call, and he wasn’t even sure what to make of them. It had been a week since that day in the office with Nest. Now here they were with two leads, each a little more unbelievable than the last and all he had was money to offer in reward. Stepping to the platform he cast a spell to augment his voice and he began.

“Gladiators of Gladius I welcome you. For those who do not know me my name is Owen Ir’Tolden and I serve as a representative of the remainder of The Arcane Order here in Gladius. Week ago I was given vision of the fall of Gladius to which I began to search for a reason in the shadows. We have two leads which are weak at best but need to be explored. They will take you outside the safety of the Nimbus but you will be rewarded with information upon your return.

“The leads will be given upon the selection of a party. If you are not interested you are welcome to leave. If you are interested stay and ask what questions you have, and I will answer to the best of my ability.”

Owen waited for the crowd to ask introspective questions. He noticed some individuals in the back leaving; merchants, housewives dragging children who wanted to stay, the self absorbed and who only cared about self preservation. These he knew would leave.

Moving to the front were some of the more recent arrivals to Gladius, some carving out their name winner’s board, some seeking the early glory, and others he knew were in it just for the money. Owen knew that some would take him up on the offer without concern, others would need convincing. Dismissing the amplification spell he spoke to the much smaller crowd that gathered. “There are two objects that need to be retrieved, once they are returned to Gladius we can hopefully discover how they are woven into my vision. At which point I there will be a further option to continue on whatever information we discover.”

I reserve Sienna for Owen, Purple for Nest, and red for enemies. If you would like to introduce your character have them introduce themselves and ask a question or comment. Please give them a color as well. You are welcome to introduce more than one character for consideration of the campaign. Owen/I will be the final determiner of who goes on the campaign.

A shrill voice broke through the general mumblings of the smaller crowd. "What sort of rewards can I expect?" it said.

The crowd parted a little to reveal a short figure, human but not as tall as most, dressed in simple garb but with at least a dozen or so pockets lining his vest, and more pouches around his waist. His hair was a mess of wild black, and his pale face contained an expression of both mischeviousness and arrogance. The man wore a slight sneer instead of a smile underneath his thin moustache as he waited for a response.

Owen sized up the man and considered him for a moment. "Rewards can take different forms. Aside from keeping any treasure that is found on the expedition, there is gold that I am offering. Some others may prefer favors, which I can offer to the best of my ability. What is your name?"

"My name is Arlo," the man said. With almost perfect timing, a nearby shopkeeper shouted, "the Annoy...," but Arlo quickly interrupted with an even louder response, "...just Arlo." After glaring back at the shopkeeper with a poisonous stare, Arlo continued. "I have certain skills which allow me to get into hard-to-reach places, and without raising alarms, if that would prove useful to your expedition. However, I want to make sure that it is worth my time."

Arlo paused for a moment for dramatic flair, but didn't quite get the reaction from the crowd that he had hoped. He continued, "If the rewards are sufficient, and if there aren't going to be too many questions about how the job was accomplished, I am interested."

Kelva Isilung - A gray elf steps forward.

"Mage Ir'Tolden, I present myself and my ability for your consideration.  I am a cleric of the Self-Made One, who teaches us to improve ourselves and others.  To that end, I am capable of enhancing the group that you send, as well as holding my own place among it."  With some arrogance, she adds, "I believe I would be naturally chosen as the leader of your selections."
"In return, I ask for knowledge.  I would be interested in the study of these objects, if they be magic.  Alternately, I would be interested in gaining admission to the Arcane Order's libraries, at some associate level.  Knowledge is not consumed, in evident fact it grows with the teaching.  Thus do I believe my request is reasonable."
The elf bows, a slight tiltling of the waist made visible by the change of angle of her long, straight silver hair.
"If there is any additional guidance you can provide, I might begin preparations now, in tools and spells, to see our success."

A wizened, weathered figure dottered forwards through the dispersing crowd, slowly squinting at Arlo before speaking slowly in measured tones, his voice muted and soft enough that it drew the onlookers in closer, "But how will one such as you deduce which hard-to-reach places to search, o confident one?"

Hearing Kelva speak up at nearly the same time as he himself was shuffling through the crowd, the wizened elf looks the younger elf up and down and mutters, "Age before beauty, sonny, and I win at both - step aside now and let your betters have at this 'Ir'Tolden' lad, will you?"

To Owen, he gave a courteous bow, and said "I am Denerell
--one 'n,' one 'r,' two 'l's when you're recording it--known herein and thereabouts as 'The Creator,' though from whence the title came I can't recall or bother to remember.  The 'Fall of Gladius,' indeed.  Hmmph.  Gladius is quite dear and precious to me, you know.  I'm old, and not old like your kind gets old.  I'm old old.  And I like it here.  The Nimbus suits me.  We'll see what she does with an elf that ripens up with the millenia, eh?  Yes, yes.  Where was I... oh... Yes, that's right -- two objects, you say, and then we--well, I and perhaps others, should they be necessary--retreive them, and then get the information?  Why not the information now, then the objects, should they be necessary, and then the rewards forthwith and forever more?  Either way, Gladius is not falling.  It's rising, in fact.  Like a fine souffle..."  The old elf rambles on to himself, mentioning names of various bakeries across the land and the qualities of their souffles.

"'Sonny'?  Your eyes are as addled as your brain, dear ancestor.  Perhaps you may be better suited to the research than the procurement of these objects.  The Nimbus does suit you, it may be all that sustains what remains when most of you has already made the journey to the western isles."
She mumbles, "And races call me haughty."

Owen nods at Arlo "Well met Arlo. Make your mark with Nest over there and you are welcome to stay and continue to listen to the questions that others might raise or be on your way. Making your mark does not mean we will call upon you as we will be looking to put together a team of individuals."

As the words came out of his mouth two elves seemed to rise to the surface of the crowd making a specticale of themselves

Owen allowed Kelva and Denerell to bicker back and forth for a few moments. It reminded him of how parents and children would fight. Both Grey elves seemed to think that had something to offer and the adventuring itch struck them at very different stages in life. He needed to form them into a group somehow, both seemed to want to impress but he wasn't quite sure they were done with each other yet. Kelva sought knowledge with her head, her heart however was rather rash. Denerell seemed to think entitlement was something that came with age, but for these quests, Owen knew his physical stamina could be a liablity.

Their attention seemed to have turned from him to souffle preparation and clarification of gender.

"Excellent," Arlo muttered, a bit too loudly, "a high-and-mighty princess of an elf and a nearly-dead conjurer. It seems like the makings of a successful adventuring group to me." He twisted his mouth in something that was neither a frown nor a grin, as if he was simultaneously disgusted and amused by the gathering of the other potential candidates.

"I'll tell you what preparations we're going to need," he said as he stared up at Kelva. "A good escape route, for when things inevitably go bad with this group."
