Flesh out a Fight Competition

This summer, we're doing something a little different. We have a lot of tactical-fun here at the CoCo. I think it is about time to get into a more creative mode!

So - find a fight and flesh it out into a short story.

Specifics

Take an existing non-separate thread fight and reflavor it into a story situation. Come up with motivations (hopefully in line with the characters' goals) and a reason why the two characters are fighting.

You need not use only fights that involve your own characters and I fully approve of tasteful parody if the situation boils down into absurdity.

I'm putting a non-hard limit of 1500 words for the entries. You can exceed this limit, but in the interest of keeping the competition short and trying to have a usable story to link to Facebook and our blog, I want something that can be easily digested by potential readers.

Rules

Submissions may be posted from Friday, 12 July 2012 until 27 July 2012. Any submissions received after that date will not be considered for scoring.

Each player may submit up to two entries, but only the highest scoring of the two will be evaluated among the rest of the entries.

Judging

TelinArtho will be the sole judge of this competition. He might enlist non-CoCo resources to provide feedback on the stories.

Scoring

Scoring is handled in three categories

1. Creativity: This is the main point of the exercise and counts for half of the scoring (10 points).
2. Accuracy: You shouldn't reference attack rolls and saving throws directly in the story, but having it be accurate to the way things unfolded is essential. Some artistic license could be taken, but make sure it is appropriate to the situation. Up to 5 points can be earned in this category.
3. Delectable Prose: This can be tied to the creativity element, but the point is to try to write in a way that is enjoyable to read. Avoid overly convoluted structures in favor of action-oriented, short sentences when the situation calls for it.

Winners

Only one winner for this one.

1st prize: Addition of the story to the Tales of Gladius; Arias of Sagaris. In addition the player earns 5 credits to spend as s/he wishes.

Exceptions

TelinArtho is not permitted to enter this competition as a contestant. He might submit an additional story for the heck of it though.

Two questions:
1. Is it allowed to be a non-separate-thread monster fight?
2. Is their motivation for fighting allowed to be simply "they're gladiators in the arena", or does there have to be more to it?

Monster fights that are not separate thread fights are acceptable.

There is not a requirement that the fight has to be outside of the arena - that is certainly a possibility if that's where the creativity takes you.

Ok, then I think I'll take the humorous/parody route and do the infamous 88 round fight...only question is how to do it...

wow, time flies; didn't even realize when this closed.  may submit a short story as time permits, regardless, but I should have definitely paid more attention to the deadline!

Not for contest entry purposes, but to at least make there be a little bit more to read, will link to the only lengthy any sort of "fight related story" I've written up to this point, some of the backstory and early fight history of Malyuk, the blubberous dretch.

Would lvoe to see this contest re-posted at regular intervals, as truly didn't realize ended 7/27!

The COre COliseum is a tactics-based arena for both 3.5e and 4e D&D. We run fights each week - so join today!

I expected it to have a lower participation rate - but I wanted to do "something different" for the "off-cycle" competition (as opposed to the regular annual competition).

I have a few more ideas for contests - so it is not a big deal that this one wasn't terribly successful. I anticipated having time to write something up myself but got bogged down by a combination of work and real life.

Yitzi - I guess you take the prize as the only contestant. Congratulations

Yeah, I was in two minds about whether to go for this, since I didn't really want to set a chunk of time aside for it recently. I was going to have a look at it anyway but I didn't have a specific fight in mind or anything so no worries.

I do think this was a good idea though, even if a creating-a-character competition is slightly more up my street. I guess the Goblin Horde idea is on hold for now, though?
