I recently wrote up a campaign inspired partially by Ed Greenwood's article about patrons for his adventuring team. It was based around an elvish noble who wanted the party to retrieve an artifact that had been stolen by highwaymen. Little did the party know the "noble" was actually the leader of the highwaymen, and was cleaning house before he skipped town. Also included was a dwarven cleric, who was the elf's trusted lieutenant and friend, and an ogre barbarian, sent along as muscle. I loved...

      Great article Chris!
I have to add that I strive to encourage the players to make their characters part of the story. Rather than have a band of adventurers who gush when they meet the likes of Elminster, Storm Silverhand or some other high-powered NPC, I endeavor to create campaigns where the lives & deeds of the players come to the fore.
Players that hang back and don't risk anything don't reap the rewards of fortune and glory. Especially the glory.
      Fame more than riches,...

I agree, though it does annoy me that Paladins have to be lawful good. This is the only class that is restricted to good as their alignment, and I have always felt that a paladin could be lawful neutral or lawful evil instead, though the class description may take a little modification.

I'm running a campaign at the moment with a good amount of politics... my players have decided the city is evil and they will adventure elsewhere. Sad, but the real fun is finding ways to make them go back to the city they hate, bwahahah

Some time in the next 12 months, I'll be running a more political campaign in Eberron where Erandis Vol through her various agents will become a stablising influence in a particular region... For her own purposes, of course!

I run D&D on my kindle. so I don't want multiple adventures on a single file. they're now impossible to organize.

Sudden Death was Awesome. I've spent the last 4-5 days (since last Wednesday) looking up the Article Archives for the next instalment of the DM Experience. Hope to see it soon, your stories and tips are just awesome.
If not for being inspired by your Column, I would never have taken the step to become a DM.

I Been running my game(Home-brewed using the adnd 2ed books as a tool kit set to help create that game). I haven't missed a month without running at least one session in 20 years, meaning I have done more gaming than most who started in the 70s. I stopped playing characters on a serious basis in 1996 cause I couldn't find a DM as good as my first DM. About Me

About Me: My job title at Wizards of the Coast is Senior Producer, D&D RPGs. My job is to oversee the creation of all D&D RPG products as well as the people responsible for creating them. I get to work with a lot of talented people, and even boss around some of them. On Monday and Wednesday evenings, I run a D&D 4E campaign ("Iomandra and the Dragon Sea") for two different groups. I'm also the DM in a series of podcasts featuring "Tycho" and "Gabe" of Penny Arcade, Scott Kurtz of PvP, and Wil Wheaton (who are all too cool to hang out with the likes of me). My main WoW character is a Level 80 Blood Elf Paladin named Soulkrath.

Any chance we will still see the Tomb of the Orc Slayer and its counterparts as a published adventure?

I Been running my game(Home-brewed using the adnd 2ed books as a tool kit set to help create that game). I haven't missed a month without running at least one session in 20+ years, meaning I have done more gaming than most who started in the 70s. I stopped playing characters on a serious basis in 1996 cause I couldn't find a DM as good as my first DM. My first DM was a military man they called the "First Gygax" cause he invented a rpg based off-board games before D&D came out, he taught me to DM. I have seen you Chris running overly preplanned sessions on video but we both know we could make a donkey look like a good DM with all that planning. Any video of games you running a session like a normal DM at home after maybe a day or so of planning?. Until I see that I cannot judge you as a good or bad DM, the current videos do not speak to that due to the amount of prep for those sessions. In my opinion though your a very cartoony!(made up word) DM, I have seen children run better sessions than many of yours on youtube(to be honest). I still run 3-4 days a week on average and I was doing this before you came around and will be doing this long after your gone Chris.. Anyways kiddo if there is video of you doing real DMing pitch it to me. I wanna add a note, I have never ran a module, I started off with only 3 books at the age of 11 - DMG, PHB, MM, I never had a realm or modules so I had to make it all myself and still do(I cannot run another DMs stuff and that is how I view modules, another DMs game and if he/she wants to run it have at it but don't ask me to for you). My game keeps up with current gaming and even takes a step ahead of current products so I don't need to depend on wotc's pen and paper game to do my thing(Happy gamer here but just noticed many people sitting on thrones they have no right to sit upon and I like confronting some of those people, can't you tell? lol).
