I often get the feeling that the Chaos Scar campaign is a bit of patchwork hodge-podge of ideas, as we haven't seen a controlling theme or concept yet. What themes do you think should exist within the Scar? Possibilities:

Mutations! We've seen mutants, are we looking at a sort of scourge for non-mutated life.

Far Realm and aberrations, the Scar opens up portals to the Far Realms and madness

Psychic stuff, with PHB3 out, we need a setting to explore these possibilities further.

Other ideas?
Thoughts on these ideas?

I'll be using the Far realm-aberrations-madness theme aswell as zehir poison focus, but plan not to go over board heavy on them until their parts in my main plots turn up.

I haven't developed a full on overarching theme yet, but here's what has happened so far in my campaign. After Eyes In the Forest as kind of an introduction I had the party  hired by Citirrian (The Saruun Guild wizard) to recover the Staff of  Earthen Might (Stick In the Mud). Upon leaving the dungeon they were  jumped by bandits from the Brother Gray who had been hired by an unknown  person who wants the staff. After defeating the bandits they got back  to the keep to find that Citirrian's servant boy, the only other witness  to the meeting where they were hired, had been murdered. This was the  hint that Citirrian has a competitor in trying to recover items from the  Scar. Their only clue being the involvement of a member of the Brothers  Gray in the ambush (Corporal Fallek recognized him from the party's  description) they next headed to The Crossroads where Millen Silvereye,  the owner of the trading post there is rumored to have contact with the  Brothers Gray. They had to fight the hobgoblins at the gibbet tree to  rescue an npc they knew and were immediately attacked by dwarves who had  been inside the trading post purchasing furs. The dwarves turned out to  be members of the Bronzeknuckle Clan (Dungeon # 173) who recognized the  armor of the party's halfling rogue (which she took off a dwarf corpse  in Stick In the Mud) as belonging to a cousin who disappeared while  adventuring in the Scar (He had actually been part of a previous group  hired by Citirrian). So now the party has a feud with the  Bronzeknuckles. Millen Silvereye was willing to tell the party where the  Brothers Gray were hiding out in return for them recovering a gem for  him that is rumored to be in an abandoned temple in the woods to the  north (Dead By Dawn). After getting trapped in the temple and holding  off the zombie horde the party returns to the Crossroads and Millen  gives them the location they desire, which is of course the abandoned  mine in The Brothers Gray. After defeating the bandits there they find  out that the person who hired them is a mysterious Scarlet Witch (A  reworked version of Morgana from Den of the Slavetakers) who showed up last night with some duergar from the clan in The Hammer Falls, and they headed into the mine to recover the Chaos Shard that she had detected through divination was there. The mine is going to be enough of the Tainted Spiral to get the party to 3rd level and the last encounter will be a combination of that adventures final encounter and the final encounter of The Brothers Gray. Morgana will escape on the second round by having just finished a Linked Portal scroll while the duergar and Moseley cover her retreat, and they are all attacked by fell taints. Hopefully none of the players will do something stupid like try to jump through the portal, but if they do they'll get what they deserve. I'm running this in Greyhawk so Morgana is going to turn out to be a Pyermius worshipping agent of the Scarlet Brotherhood working with the duergar, who are also Pyremius worshipper. That's all I've got so far. There will probably be an interlude involving the priest Benwick who will turn out to be a snaketongue cultist of Merrshaulk (Zehir). I've left a couple of clues about him and the party is definitely suspicious. After that they'll finally be summoned for an audience with Lord Drysdale and begin working at his behest. There's a Knight in the party now so I'm thinking of dangling command of a small nearby village under her and the party's nose as a motivation. There should be plenty of trouble that comes with that responsibility and at some point they'll get around to The Hammer Falls.

I'm not thrilled with what they've done with the chaos scar. WOTC put out more 1st, 2nd and 3rd level adventures than anyone could possibly use in any campaign, and then made very few for 4-10th. At this point, my group will likely level out of the scar before the penultimate adventure(s) is/are published (if there are any!).

So what I did was plan for "runecutter's ruin", the level 8 chaos scar adventure from dungeon #186, to be the final one before my group moves on to Tomb of Horrors. There's spoilers here:

Spoiler: Show

In that adventure, it is revealed that there's runes scattered throughout the chaos scar. These runes keep a primordial imprisoned in some quasi-realm. This runepriest, Olek Dael, is borrowing energy from the runes for his own nefarious purposes. He has no idea he's about to accidentally unleash a primordial on the world!

He's draining power from the runes to call upon the evil god bane to come to the world to help build a new empire.

So to foreshadow that, just have the heroes find some of the runes. And maybe run into someone with one of the runes on them (as detailed in the adventure).

In my campaign, the adventures are about stopping evil people from using the meteor's power for their own purposes rather than discovering the powers of the meteor themselves.

What if we start adding group member made modules to the wiki? We could start with a map, and build it up from there?

Hmmmm....

@Firebeetle, I've been thinking along the same lines. WotC seems to have dropped the Chaos Scar, at least for now, but there's enough history and background material to have very solid builds in keeping with the original content. I think if mod. designers kept to the basic story line premise then DM's who started their parties in the Scar in order to have ease of use and the ability to have their players more in control of their options will still be supported. Quality might be an issue, but I think it's an idea worth exploring.

I'd like to see more about Bedlam too, its such an interesting place!
I dont think they dropped the Scar yet though, we've had pauses before. They have lots of settings to cover now though so naturally there will be longer between =(
I'll try to add my notes/ideas/encounters from my campaign as it progresses.
We will likely have a break for a few adventures in another campaign soon though so progress will be slow.

Btw I like your setup so far scottmcmillan and lovely summary ! =)

“The Legacy of Baelard” is an adventure for characters of levels 10–12.  Because the action is almost entirely underground, it can be used in any campaign, including the Chaos Scar.

I hope this isn't meant as further development.  I feel that the D&D Encounters information [complete and un edited] should be provided to the “Original” Chaos Scar campaign players and paying DDI subscribers ONLY.  The fact that we pay for EXCLUSIVE content should mean just that!

Sorry about the rant.

Other than that, I’m sticking to a Far Realms theme.  The Brotherhood of the Scar, are neither worshipers of Bane nor servitors of Zehir, but something much fouler than either combined.

Far Realm seems to be solid.

I've been thinking of other, smaller ideas.

1.) Hybrid or Mashup creatures. Owlbears, hippgriffs, these creatures originate in the Choas Scar. Local wildlife is a lot like "Avatar, the Last Airbender" with monkeybats and such. Something about the Scar causes these creatures, or some wizard, group, or artifact creates them.

2.) The Scar causes numerous portals to open. At the heroic level, these are largely one way portal that spill out nasty monsters or create pockets attuned to that plane. At paragon level and deeper down, the PCs encounter two way portals.
