It just occurred to me--different worlds have different definitions of a week. In the Forgotten Realms, a week is ten days, and there are three of them per month. How's that going to work?

How about a system for creating and running your own stronghold, tower, church, thieves' guild? Maybe establish your own domain out in the wilderness?

Umm, in my last session my level one party encountered a band of orcs. I went through both my magic missile spells, one of them empowered to do maximum damage, and I only killed one Orc. Granted, my first casting was split my missile between three different orcs (as they all were already damaged by a fire trap) but didn't kill a single one despite the fact that they were each already hurt. My second cast used my daily feat to empower them and two missiles hit one Orc and killed him, and one...

Maybe what they should do is have "classic" advancement, which is more of what we are used to and then "official advancement" for use in dnd encounters and living campaigns, as i suspect that's what is behind this move any way. Then people can chose. That could work but it involves not singling out the fast track approach as the default or "right" way to play.
I know this for sure, it will fail miserable in its goal of attracting old school players back into the fold if they read that the...

The problem with satyrs being male only is it is not really grounded in any sort of history. Satyrs weren't originally half-goat half men, fauns were and they could be female as well. There was a god and goddess that were fauns. Additionally, though it is more modern (by the 16th century), female satyrs or satyress' became prevalent. If you want to split the genders, include fauns (the O.G. satyr) as the female version, but to not have a classic female version against the role of history and...

I don't mind the idea of female satyrs (precedent in Fauns, from Roman myth, they were uncommon, but existed), male harpies (just makes sense to me, unless harpies come into being some other way, curse, god-spawn, etc), inccubi (male succubi, precedent in Medieval myth, tho they did have different abilities), maedars (male Medusa, but with different characteristics and slightly different powers), but I am hesitant about male nymphs/dryads. In legend, dryads where just one kind of nymph, and the...

Conceptually, you're absolutely right. But take for instance, another type of example, probably more close to reality than yours (4:1). What happens when they build the classes, precisely the way they want to, with each getting the powers and upgrades that feel right with a level, not too little and not too much. Then, lets say they run the math and it turns out that one class is 7% more powerful than another. Or perhaps 17% or 37%. Then, how exactly do you change those classes to fix it. How do...

I dont agree with experience changes, competent dms could handle exp. between classes. I always give different exp for all players, thats the different topic.
Before we compare barbarian and fighter, we should see paladin and ranger too. (maybe spellsword, duskblade whatever it is) Now, you are changing something but when you add paladin/ranger we`ll see some issues too.

I'm kind of fond of this rough interpretation of a hippogriff. I like how its head is both equine and avian.
      February 9, 2013 7:38 PM PST
You could make a disease or curse that turns normal animals into part eagle versions of them selves, Like Griffons.
But just on the topic of Hippogriffs I find myself liking the far right picture with all legs ending in talons. If you made it so the talons when together make more of a hoof shape and when the use them to pick up prey they extend out like normal talons I think that would be cool. Or make Griffons more like predators and Hippogriffs more like a domesticated version.

Yes, those prices are typical for audiobooks. There are no “books on tape” any more, though … you’re dating yourself, my friend! The physical ones are on CDs. ;-p
Audible has various levels of subscription plans, which give you a significant price break as long as you’re willing to pay the monthly or yearly subscription fee.

I think Michael Ironside (voice of Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell) should have been a narrator for some of the Realms books. That would be really awesome to hear Mike read Paul S. Kemp's work.

The way my current group decided on the naming convention, is to reverse the naming - the "Abominations" (powerful snake-like beings) are called Purebloods, and the "Purebloods" (human-like yuan-ti) are the Abominations.
The way the names are right now, you'd think it's the other way around - where the Purebloods are the top tier and Abominations are the manual labor rejects.
And what to call the hybrid middle tier - I don't care. I'm not offended by the term "half-breed" or...

I always had the purebloods leading the yuan-ti. The abominations may have been the strongest and most alien, but they followed the commands purebloods. I think 4E got it right, when the anathema went made and were thrown down and imprisoned. I like this version of yuan-ti.

If you are thinking of rogues in the 2nd edition sense as Thief, re-named for political correctness, then I agree with what you're saying.
But let me give (what I hope is) a good reason to have a skill-focused, character that isn't necessarily a two-bit thief as a playable niche... the renaming of rogue from the idea of being a character that behaves in an aberrant way. Plenty of classes represent the warrior type: Monks, Fighters, Barbarians, Plenty of wizard types (Sorcerer, Warlock,...

I guess I'm the only one who feels this way about the short rest, healing surge or whatyamacallit, but here's how it seems to play out in my mind...
"Fytee the Fighter, having held off Ugg the Ogre in a vicious exchange of blows draws back and is suddenly joined by his trusty companions. Wizzy the Wizard points his finger, and with a word of power causes the ogre to ignite into a screaming ball of fire. Rowan the Rogue, seeing the panicked and blazing giant charge forward, leaps in the...

I think alignment and morale should be discussed before starting a new campaign. Your guidelines are good if the campaign gets the "good" or even "neutral to good" flag. When you happen to support all alignments for your party or play an outright evil or neutral to evil campaign, it shouldn't be too punishing if the party plays the previously chosen alignment correctly.
Letting characters shift through alignments (slowly!) can make up great character development. However, there is a fine...

I like the idea of limited self healing as it helps the flow of the game. If after every fight the party has to rest for 8 hrs nothing would ever get done or every subsequent fight gets more and more deadly, especially if the adventure has time constraints. It should not be during combat, that is the clerics job or get potions. The Playtest idea is great but may need further scaling if it works out too powerful.
      July 9, 2012 11:11 AM PDT
I feel very strongly that the level of healing generally being discussed trashes the 4th wall. Magic allows for a lot of leeway in modelling, but without magic, healing should take place at a rate akin to reality- or at least no better than a typical action film. I hope you create an optional modular rule doing this, because for those gamers that left at the introduction of 4th ed, I think this is probably the largest issue. Imagine in real life (doesn't matter if you are the toughest person...

This is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. Answers/Comments: short skill list: 3 primaries is too few... I could see that. I do have an invoker in the group, so I could throw Religion in with Diplomacy. I also like Jester's idea of using Thievery/Bluff (maybe even Dungeoneering/Arcana) to slow the raiders and gain back a success. Basically, you guys are saying I should find ways to make the secondary skills important enough to become primary skills? I like it. 2 successes: My thought was that it would take multiple PCs acting together to move the townsfolk forward. I haven't gotten to read up on Group Skill Challenges yet, so I'm not sure how WotC recommends you handle that, but this was what I came up with. I figured 2 or 3 of the PCs would be making primary skill checks each round, with the other 2-1 giving bonuses, and if 2 or more of those checks succeeded, the whole group would move forward. Otherwise they would lose ground to the naogi. You think that mechanic would work better just by making it more complex/requiring more successes?

Absolutely LOVE the Stormhaven campaign, and your "Prop Shop" sessions have really helped me think about how to run a campaign as engaging and well-rounded as yours.
