Um, no. 4th Edition was a dummy version of DnD to cater to the MMO Generation of players, i.e. the kids. First and 2nd Edition were far more versatile as far as DM control and player character development. 3.5 was okay but fourth just stripped the game to a bare bones hack and slash system that needed minitures to help the players "imagine" the scenario they were in. As you said, your preferences are not everyone's. Thank the gods.
If they are good enough players you can let them play 2 characters each. Also if you want to increase your player interest I would check with your local gaming shop about leaving a flyer with an email so interested Gamers can find you.
I am currently running a testplay, large campaign, see www.Calvannagames.com, and have 2 players who run their characters and 2 NPC's each, It can be done in v4, I have custom combat sheets that help ALOT. With those and the power sheets from the character builder here it is very efficient.
the same thing here ive been looking for people to play with and a GM. so i created a group for people in my area to go to and i told one of my close friends and were trying to spread it around we've posted a couple print outs at local game shops and around other public places and we also put new players are welcome. i mean that is one strategy that you could use
The best way is to find a hobby store near you that is willing to host a group once a week. It helps if you advertise by flyer, forums, etc and include what version, level of module, and how often you will meet. I hope that helps
