When your going to buy anything, you want to buy it when its low cost, and if you wish to sell it, then sell it when its high.
Seahorse314159Sounds easy, but you have to time it right. Hammy has a column in the website puremtgo.com/ and he often identifies good cards that have dropped in value for whatever reason. Right now many card prices are dropping as they are rotating out of Standard. If you play other formats than standard, you can possibly take advantage of these times. I might spend $25 a month on avg playing Magic Online, but I make sure to stretch that 25 as far as I can buy buying good cards at the right time (for me), which is when they are most affordable.
Of course, the other time is when a new card comes out and it not yet used in a good deck. Knight of Reliquary is a fine example. I thought he was just too good for its price and got 4 of them at 1.00 each. Now that Zendikar is partially spoiled, he's up to to $5 each. So trust your instict on new cards.
