READER: “You just sold a novel for a million dollars. What do you do next?”
Ed Greenwood (author of Elminster Must Die): Go right on writing about the Realms. Doing that is my life. Seriously.
Erin Evans (author of The God Catcher): Write the next one…from a tropical resort. (Friend Erin)
Christopher Rowe (author of Sandstorm): Pay some bills, go to Europe for a couple of weeks, come home and start the next novel. (Friend Christopher)
Mark Sehestedt (author of The Fall of Highwatch): I manage to mumble, “Wake me up at the bank,” before passing out.
Richard Lee Byers (author of Unholy): Travel. I love traveling, and I haven’t been able to afford to do much of it in recent years. (Friend Richard)
Philip Athans (author of A Reader’s Guide to R.A. Salvatore’s Legend of Drizzt): One book, good-bye. (Thank you, Steven Martin.) (Friend Philip)
Erik Scott de Bie (author of Downshadow): Immediately push for 8 more books in the series (for a total of 3 trilogies). For me, writing is about the story, not about the money. I simply would not enjoy the money if I were not writing! (Friend Erik)
Jaleigh Johnson (author of Mistshore): 1. Happy Dance. 2. Pay off my mortgage. 3. Book a 3-week trip to Europe. 4. Drinks for everyone. (Friend Jaleigh)
Richard Baker (author of Avenger): Take my family to Disneyworld.(Friend Richard)
Rosemary Jones (author of City of the Dead): Kiss the publisher who signed that contract! And then probably have a mild heart attack. It’s a weird quirk of the writing business that those “million dollar” contracts are based on someone’s expectation of sales. If your book doesn’t sell that much, you’re publishing poison. I’d rather have a book that sold millions of copies than a contract for a million dollars for my next book. (Friend Rosemary)
