I see worries that tracking expertise over the course of a long round could pull players out of the story.
You could represent expertise dice WITH ACTUAL DICE.
If you have 5d6 in XD, then stack 5 six-siders in front of you at the start of your turn. If you use 2 on attack, they go into the center of the table. You can then use the remaining 3 on parrying, attacks of opportunity, etc.
This prevents the need to track anything in your head.

You could split XD into Expertise Dice and Damage Dice.
When a player gains an XD according to currently rules, give fighters the choice to gain a "Damage Die" instead, that adds to every attack. Then get rid of Deadly Strike. This will let players differentiate between "Simple Fighter" and a fighter with a variety of combat options.
Alternatively, replace XD with "Action Points", but still give fighters the choice between "one action point" and "one damage die" at key levels. Then,...

I know this is a long shot, since your comment is 5 months old at the time of my reply, but bounded accuracy essentially describes a paradigm shift in the "mathematical engine" that runs behind the scenes. In earlier editions there was this ever-escalating quasi-arms race between the PCs and the DM, with the PCs gaining ability bonuses and attack bonuses every level making it increasingly difficult for the DM to construct challenging encounters. The bounded accuracy system spaces out these...

Thanks for the input on this, PrestonSnow. Now it makes sense. And you nailed something I do to this day in 4E - "level-up" creatures so they are a challenge to the party.

First off, I like the Hit Dice mechanics for healing, and don’t have a problem with how HP’s are gained each level. Those are fine, but I think some of the other posters are right, just call ‘Hit Dice’ used for natural healing something else (surges, first aid, recovery dice, etc).
‘Hit Points’, as defined by M.Mearls, raises my hackles. Actually, it’s just a different way of saying ‘Wound Points’ and ‘Vitality Points’ like the Star Wars games. Which I liked, and they worked well, but...

    About Me

About Me: Avid gamer and avowed nerd since 1983. I'm also a First Sergeant in the US Army on active duty. I've been the East Rift Writing Admin since LFR began. I was a triad member for the Duchy of Urnst in Living Greyhawk before that. If there was an Eberron living campaign I'd jump on it in a heartbeat!
Movies: I love movies of all types, especially when the ending surprises me. Doesn't happen very often.
TV Shows: Family Guy, Futurama, and Venture Brothers are my current favorites. I was pretty fond of Deadwood as well.
Books, Comics and Graphic Novels: I'll read anything. I prefer military history, fantasy, and alternate history.
Music: I'm in a Motorhead phase right now. I've also been listening to just about anything put out by Josh Homme in one of his many projects.
      Wizard Book Lines:
      Dark Sun
      Eberron
      Forgotten Realms
Hobbies: Gaming, WoW, weightlifting, running, movies and finding new, exciting restaurants with my wife.
Likes: Curry, mountains, people who think before they speak.
      Dislikes: Bullies, sand, excessive heat.
      My Games:
      Dungeons & Dragons
      The Great Dalmuti
