Roleplaying and adventuring is teamplay so other characters should have problem with ones that want to rest after 5mins of adventuring.
Easiest irl examples for 5min workday are:
      You are doing a project...
      You are working...
You are playing a team based sport...
...and have one person to join you who is really good at what you are doing, but she's such a primadonna or slacker that she'll only write really good A4/works for 5mins/gets score or two for your team and then...

I'm not sure the goal here is actually to eliminate the five-minute work day. Character power levels have to be balanced around something. To me, Mearls' initiative seems to be an essential response to the challenge of the FMWD, in that it can come about irregardless of the number or strength of encounters the players undertake. By considering opponents' power levels over a universal measure which affects all characters, the day, he is attempting to minimize the effect of play style on...

Also a player since 2nd ed, and 4e is my favorite for many reasons.
But as it relates to monsters, the 4e stat block is by far the best, and there is really no reason we can't have that style stat block along with a few good paragraphs of fluff.
As many other posters have said, the monster vault and threats to nentir vale books nailed this concept perfectly, just copy this format for Next and it's a done deal.

On board here! The monsters were the thing in 4th ed. that I liked most! But yeah, some monster ecology like in 2nd ed would bring the epic fantasy flavor back.

      I think it's great!
If I can rely on the math to be relatively consistant, then it frees up a ton of brain space for me at the DM's table. I can focus on the exceptions to the math and leave the expected numbers to the spreadsheet. My players know I'm going to give them a fair shake at survivability because the core of the monsters follow a fairly steady progression, but I can throw in tactically interesting mechanics or skew the expectations dramatically in one direction or the other to...

I'm inclined to stop making 4e player characters and just make companions instead. A lot less choices each round; same damage output; much, much quicker combat.

Is there any way to download the entire magazine so I can read it while waiting for an airplane? They used to come in PDF form.

I have to say, as a long-time DM, I absolutely love DnDNext. All you've done, for our group at least, is taken the exact way we play, and gotten rid of all the garbage from every edition into a simplified bounded accuracy. Provided you completely leave level-based stat scaling out of the equation (aside from damage:hp), you have our entire hoard of geeks eagerly awaiting full-blown content =)

I must say I am so happy with what I have read so far. There are some issues that need to be addressed - The magic (cantrips are a great idea but just too powerful) and dying ( way too difficult to kill a character - there is very little threat). Please do can you now overhaul the public play adopted by WOTC. Hiding D&D in game shops will do as much harm to D&D as this new addition will help it. WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO SPREAD THE WORD TO GAME GROUPS, SCHOOLS and PUBLIC EVENTS.

I know this is a long shot, since your comment is 5 months old at the time of my reply, but bounded accuracy essentially describes a paradigm shift in the "mathematical engine" that runs behind the scenes. In earlier editions there was this ever-escalating quasi-arms race between the PCs and the DM, with the PCs gaining ability bonuses and attack bonuses every level making it increasingly difficult for the DM to construct challenging encounters. The bounded accuracy system spaces out these...

Thanks for the input on this, PrestonSnow. Now it makes sense. And you nailed something I do to this day in 4E - "level-up" creatures so they are a challenge to the party.

article suggestions: 1) Random Generation Tables (do you use them, tips on making them, finding them, where they belong in the game etc) (actually this would be a great contest, everyone send in their best D20 Random gen tables, pick top five!)
      2) Map Fu part II
      3) Protecting the players from themselves. for example, I am running the tomb of horrors 4e adventure. Halfway into the tomb the players trigger a trap which is an elemental vortex/vent which attempts to suck them in and attack...
